Howard University to provide capacity building training to Ethiopian pharmacy schools

ENA - Howard University will provide support to build the capacity of pharmacy schools established in Ethiopia, the Addis Ababa University (AAU) said.

Dean of AAU'S School of Pharmacy, Dr. Teferi Gedif said the school of pharmacy took the pioneering role to introduce patient-oriented pharmacy education in Ethiopia with the technical assistance of Howard University.

Dr. Teferi was speaking here on Friday at the opening of a workshop on "Pharmacy Education in the 21st century: Strategic Vision and Direction".

He said the role and function of pharmacists and pharmaceutical staff needs to be reappraised and educational outcomes of the evolving pharmacy curriculum should be clearly defined.

In this regard, educational outcomes should include: pharmaceutical care with provision of both patient centered and population centered, systems management of resources and medication use systems, among others.

Dr. Teferi said cognizant of this global consensus on the changing role of pharmacists and recognizing the limitation of the traditional pharmacy curricula to accommodate the new developments in the profession, the school took the pioneering role to introduce patient-oriented pharmacy education in the country.

The dean said future pharmacotherapy instructors in all seven schools of pharmacy will be given Pharmacotherapy-I and Medication Therapy Management (MTM) courses by Howard University starting from next Monday.

"The workshop will enable us to learn other countries' experiences and evaluate where we are in terms of pharmacy education," he said.

Dean of College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Sciences, Howard University, USA, Dr. Beatrice A. Kelly on the occasion said the existing cooperation in the sector will further continue strengthened.

Good job AAU and Howard university. As it has been said, "Don't drive today with yesterday's map" I would say don't prescribe medicine with an old curriculum knowledge. Shortly, Ethiopian schools, colleges and universities must open their door for updating and new developments using new technologies rather than stuck in there and assume that ours is better than ... or kind of rigidity. That really hurts our competence in today's cutting-edge and dynamic world.
