Low key celebration for Selassie anniversary

AFP

ADDIS ABABA — The magnificent coronation ceremony for Ethiopia's last emperor Haile Selassie had a global impact, but 80 years on fewer than 100 people gathered on Sunday to mark its anniversary.

No official celebrations have been organised in Ethiopia -- just a few dozen Rastafarians and some of Selassie's former aides and officers met in a cultural centre in Addis Ababa to commemorate the coronation on November 2, 1930.

Selassie was deposed in a military coup in 1974, ending his 44-year reign.

"This anniversary is very important for rastas because Haile Selassie is considered to be like a god," the event organiser Ras Aby Tilahun told AFP.

"But it's important for Ethiopians to commemmorate this event as well, because it is our history."

The walls of the centre were hung with pictures of Selassie and the old Ethiopian flag: red, yellow and green with the emperor's seal, the Lion of Judah, in the middle.

Drums beat and a children's choir sang hymns to the glory of "Living god, Jah Rastafari", a title for Selassie, who is seen by Rastafarians as a prophet who rescued black victims of slavery.

General Wasihun Negato, a former tank commander, was presented with Ethiopia's highest military honour by Selassie himself.

"I respect His Majesty very much. I love him like a father," he said.

"I'm very proud that the Rastas love him so much. For them he is a living God. It is their right to believe that. But for me he's not a living God. Only God can live for ever. Haile Selassie was a great man, but not a God."

Also present was Prince Zarah Yakob, one of Selassie's great-nephews.

"It is a great honor to have this party in memory of the emperor's coronation," he told AFP before being interrupted sharply by his wife.

"The princess is not in favour of me talking to a journalist... Do you want me to sign my name for you?" he asked and then slipped out.

The participants gave their memories of Selassie to a background of reggae music, while outside some children watched the ceremony with curiosity.

The emperor is my favourite king!! He was the greatest King that Ethiopia ever had. After I have read so many books about the Emperor, I paid due respect to him. No one even close to him modernizing Ethiopia. He had a lot of challenges with the very conservative feudal lords convincing them the idea of modernization.

He was a wise and great diplomat who loved his country so much and earn so many respect to him and his country all over the world. Do we Ethiopians have the same respect today??

He did a lot of great things to the country and even for Africa. Unfortunately, most Ethiopians are untrustworthy and traitors in nature. We all tarnished this great magnificent king calling bad names. I think Socialism thought all Ethiopians to say bad things about the king. I was thought the same thing too. However, I found out later everything was false!!

Well, I was born a year after the king has deposed in 1974. I wish I knew him in person. I still didn't figure out why we are told all those lies about him. Is that the curse of communism??

Any way, the bible says, "... A prophet never get respect in his own country..." I think, that is what happened to the Emreror!!

Love his majesty Emperor Haile Selassie!!

RIP!!

The biggest accomplishments of the 1966 revolution in Ethiopia was the removal of Haile selase from power and the assurance that not only him but his cronies as well would never come back to power once again in the new Ethiopia. It's only been less than 50 yrs til today.

We are ever grateful to Col. Mengestu Hailemariam and his junta for the favor they had done to the Ethiopian people. No matter how little good one does, That deeds will be there to save him/her from demise and harm and we have seen that on Mengestu. All his generals who had committed crimes and mismanagement and all the bad deeds has either died or languished in prison, but because Mengestu was never part of it he stii lives like a king.
My dad says he remembers the day Haileselase was removed from power. Thousands of people had gathered in front of the palace in arat killo chanting as the VW with Haileselase was passing by " leba leba leba leba, yehe tela teche mekmke geba yehe tela tech mekmek yegeba" menamn eyalu sil.

i am glad to know the youngest generation like me have forgotten or are not interested in having that kind of rule comeback to Ethiopia. In fact, i just knew people still involve in such ceremonious from nazert today.

All in all Thank You Menge for what you have saving Ethiopia and currently i am a proud pro EPRDF member

Thank You

There was no doubt that our king is the greatest for the coming generation.

We are unlucky not see him and pass during his time when the country was a very respected one. The worest thing is that we don't respect ours and nobody will not bother to respect unless we stop our facking mind to work properly.

No king gives his doughters for the sake integrating his country. Nobody in this selfish generation will do that.

I hear people praise this leader or that leader. That killer or this killer. All are corrupt and killers. there is no good killer. haile was a killer and corrup who was not able to see what his country was experienci9ng, when people were dying at home, he was throwing Gold in most streets of West when he visisted them. mengistu was srounded by corrupt people and was persuing wrog policy and killing all who opposed him. This miget is now killing all and giving all to his favered groups. What I can say is the all are bad and they sink. Shit is shit, samll or big it smells the same.

we need to see leaders with moral values,

As much as I am for modern democratically elected system of government, I must say this.
The late Emperor Haileselassie has more good thing s than bad crdited to him.
He tried to modernize our Ethiopia against extremely backward feudal system.
He led the nation against occupation by a very modern and strong European nation during WWII.
He championed the cause of the African poor nations against the European colonizers of the time.
He was one of the founding fathers of the OAU.

I know it is because of him that the world knew about our poor Ethiopia.
He has more accomplishments under his belt than bad governance.
Finally when compared to all the leaders of our Ethiopia he has contributed more relatively than any others in terms of his political savyness, diplomatic efforts and as well as his vision for the whole nation. Finally he should have a prominent place in the history of Ethiopia.

Jordan, read the history of Haile Selassie. He was a killer, corrupt, power hungry leader. He had no mercy for his relatives and friends. With regard to Rasteferians, they have every right to believe in anything they want. All beliefs have developed similar ways.
One is older belief than the other does not mean one is better than the other.

People,

Give respect to what is due and see the positive and negative side of each leader instead of generalizing everything. Ethiopia has come a long way. Every leader has contributed to Ethiopia in good and bad way. The question is which leader's accomplishments weigh more than his bad governing. Also, you need to weigh the time we were then and the time we are now. Don't expect 30 years ago Ethiopia to be technological advanced and most developed as compared to today. Today the opportunity is available. So by that standard, Majesty has accomplished a lot with limited resources available, look at the quality of Ethiopian Airlines compared to other African and even European Airlines. People, do you remember, other Europeans used to come to Ethiopia to bet trained in ground technician in Ethiopian Airlines. It is great accomplishmet to make Ethiopia the leader in this. Today we are as backward as ever. He improved the train and railways in Ethiopia. Today, none of those work. He united Africa after colonization. He made and Ethiopia as equals as Europeans and U.S in diplomacy while Africans were still sumbissive to the Whites. It takes talent to negotiate and a good diplomat. His presence and speech at the League of Nations should not be erased. How can you even disregard that. Back then we were fighting against the aggression of outside not with eachother so, domestic issues were not as priority when outside aggressor was at hand. He also recognized that peasants were being oppressed by the lords and he was isolated when he addressed the issue. So, becareful the books you are reading. Who wrote it, perhaps Eritrean and those of Eritrean stooges OLF and TPLF of course we believe everything when we and our fathers have been witnessing the accomplishments. It is shameful. Of course he had done mistakes also: the hanging of Belay Zeleke, not relinquishing power soon to the most capapble, not reforming Ethiopia's politics and economics, recognizing other ethnicities besides Amara. He himself is Oromo, Gurage and Amara. I did not like the fact that to be close to Menelik, Majesty had to hide his other ethnicity and that is shameful. This was to prove his throne he had to say Amara. Since he had the power, he should have made Ethiopia more open and inclusive to other ethnicity and of course he should have transformed Ethiopia towards democracy step by step. Other wise, I don't see anyting worse as some of you have exaggerated. Keep on dwelling the past, perhaps that is why Ethiopia will never go forward with the likes of you living in the past that was not even an issue, the issue is now. If Majesty is gone you still don't have democracy, ethnicity is as threatening as ever, people are still starving more than ever, technologically we are still back ward, farmers are in the worst situation than they have ever been before. So, why are you still blaming the past leaders? Take the responsiblity of then who you are putting in office.

In his later years HS spend the majority of his time on African and world diplomacy forgetting about the millions of his citizens languishing due to hunger. That was the main reason for his demises.
Now we have a PM who is behaving exactly like Haile Sellasie before his overthrow. Crisis crossing the world for his own personal agenda and prestige while millions starve to death in his own backyard.

That is the story of Ethiopia. a country cought up in this endless and viscous cycle.

It is good HIM Haileselassie's coronation was remembered. They could not do better. I congratulate the organizers and good to hear Prince Zara Yacob was present. I remember the time of HS very well. It was in Harar town, as children, we always sat beside the curb and waited to see him. He had always observed the Orthodox Church's Fasting in Nehasse and he spent a quiet time and prayer. Personally, I fail to see his bad side. He was a fatherly figure, forgiving and reconciles enemies. Mandela had great respect for HIM and even now considers Ethiopia as his second home. I was not sure why some university kids and military personnel were unhappy with His administration. But that dissatisfaction and unhappiness has not abated still, has continued...even one puts a lot effort and makes Ethiopia the ten fastest growing economy in the world! We are seeing good things happening and let's be hopeful and be happy with what we have achieved. The country is much better than it was even ten years ago. Ethiopian are whiners don't teach them to whine for everything. Lastly,Ethiopia has been greatly blessed with leaders, what we are today is the cumulative effect of the previous administration's and peoples work. I remember his HIM time as peaceful and slow development. He was a christian man and bastion of Christianity in the sea of muslims and was defender of faith. Respected other faiths. He was fair to the muslim population of Ethiopia. He was level headed, did not fight to keep His throne but he prayed for his captors. I would say all of us have issues one kind or another and could be cynical, angry. I don't like the way he was killed at all. No one should die in a way that he was killed. May the Almighty God bless this country and its people and give us peace, honesty and love we need to live together.

Wozeiro Condjoyye,

If you speak with me even when I am not around, it shows how I get under your broken fingures easily, but then again everybody in here knows that.

Lets say a few words to give you some reply.

1/ I am no fan of Haile Sellasie. I have spoken on numerous occasions how his arrogance and narcissism was what led the nation to her current status. But I do give him one credit, that being stability. How come Ethiopians were not leaving their country in droves then? Virtually no "sidet"? From rich to poor, everyone was King in his house. We were not littering the world, no servants for Arabs, our children were not being sold from Japan to America, and may I add to Israel.:>>

2/ Speaking of "equal footing", if that was the case, how did a provincial gurl like you end up in Lycee Gebremariam then. May I add lounging, in Soderae and Langano, licking ice cream, lol. I might have been very very young then but I clearly remember you, giggling, laughing, and fitting in nicely with all the other students there. But everytime you returned home, you were wishing them all to die. Because you were burning with inferiority complex. You see, you can take the gurl out of the GHETTO, you can't take the GHETTO out of the gurl. Everyone can see that clearly here.

Something this king HIM proved is one thing. When leaders are very selfish, they ignore their people, become very oppressive, yet they turn their face to international diplomacy. His extreme neglect of his people and extreme international diplomacy led made foreigners to worship him, while locals were introduced a new era of image, the famine during his reign, among others. Some of you who think he was good, are either ignorant (innocent to the least) or u are the same tribally biased "zeregna" individuals.
