Meles Zenawi In a HARDtalk interview on July 4th

As world leaders gather in Scotland for the G8 meeting in Gleneagles, Africa will be the main issue on the agenda.

This week Hardtalk travels to the Africa where Stephen Sackur will be talking to people whose responsibility it is to improve the lives of Africans across the whole continent.

He starts in Ethiopia. It's one of the poorest countries in the world, but in recent years Western leaders have seen it as a beacon of hope - a country trying to drag itself out of desperate poverty with good governance.

Well, as ethiomedia.com precisely put it, Meles was `grilled`in by the tough reporters. For the first time, Meles looked desperate unlike his threatening message he sent when he was interviewd by ENA last friday. The tyrannt is exposed once again and he continued to lie , making himself a fool under the reality everyone can witness in Ethiopia. I hope he will be `grilled` more when he present himself for the international media when he visits his `buddy` Mr Blair. Long live true journalism.

Dear Stephen,

God! What do I think of the interveiw? Swell! Splendid! Excellent! I can only say THANK YOU! and I love you! We have never seen this kind of interview in 14 years of the PM reign. We are proud of you. You are a true journalist. You made us proud and smile. You made Meles Zenawi shiver and we have never ever seen him so nervous. He lost all the arrogant words he uses on us. You should do it again brother and go for Bereket Simon and you will see him shrink infront of you. They cannot cheat the Tigreans. We know what they are up to and what they have been up to when we were fighting the derge. They cannot fool us and saying they are fighting for us. They are stealing from us. Respected Stepehn, we urge you to dig and dig again and you will uncover so many things. We can assure you!!!!! Thank you!!

The barbaric dictator under the mask of democracy has been exposed to the international community.
He will never stay in power with out the will of the people of Ethiopia.
The interview clearly demonstrated the toughest skill of the journalist. Long Live true journalists.
The Grand Liar of Ethiopian prime minister was collapsed to give right answer.
Because, he was accustomed to answering 'Predesigned'questions by the Ethiopian journalists. This was no longer functional. That made him grilled.
This Evil and Crooked dictator must be forced to resign.

The BBC reporter was a First Class journalist. I have never seen the Prime Minsister grilled this much. He must regret agreeing for this interview. It was the best interview I have ever watched of any type. Meles Zenawi was grilled like a July 4 hot dog (well done).

Dear Stephen,
Please go to Bereket Somon(minister of information), another evil. You will see him collapsed infront of you.
Because , he is lying the world under the Mask of Democracy.
He is the mastermind of Ethnic bloodshed.
He is preaching 'interhamwe'to the golden and rational people of Ethiopia.
But, no Ethiopian is following his long lasting preaching of Interhamwe.
Make him grilled like his crooked friend meles (small m).

Thank you Stephen!

You exposed the true nature of Meles Zenawi, his party, and the Electoral Board he wanted to be proud of as transparent. He must have got a new insight about himself from your interview. In fact, I can say that THE HARD TALK interview was not only an interview for Meles. Rather, it seems more of a counseling and guidance session.

Oh! what more can I say to you Stephen. Thank you again for revealing the cowardness of Meles and his government to the world. Out of his shame, he told you that the Electoral Board was established by himself when he was a president a decad a go. Really amazing! The most amazing thing for me is the touchy comment you gave him on this particular issue. Oh! very interesting!

True journalism with excellent questions, have prevailed the tyrant’s true identity. What more can we ask more than the 30 minutes Mr. Stephen's bombarded questions to expose the PM true character. No worries his day are numbered and Ethiopians will unit all across the country. There is a saying that goes "Every dog has its day".
The PM claimed Ethiopia’s economy historically increased since he took power. You know what, I have got a massage for Mr. PM, You only made Ethiopian the #1 beggar in the world since you took the office rather than creating jobs for those same unemployed youth you admitted on the interview that you opened fire and kill them not long ago. Your time is up!

Thank you

As one interviewee said not long ago, Todays breed of African leaders (especially the Tyrant MELLES) are excellent imposters, who wants to portray that they are democratic. But their true identity is not far from thier predecessors the (Mengistu's and Mobutu's)
Melles's arrogancy is breathtaking!!

First of all I think that all Ethiopians should express their sincere gratitude to the BBC, the British people and Stephen Sackur for the professionally conducted interview of the Ethiopian Premier. It was simply marvelous and we hope to get more of this kind of journalism in Ethiopia. At long last, it was time for Ethiopians to enjoy another style of interview. One that is real, professional and inquisitive. We were fed up of the pre-arranged interviews that looked like a lecture of journalists by the PM with such an arrogance that is a feature of his character. The cross-examination clearly showed that Meles Zenawi is the State in Ethiopia. He managed to make himself the sovereign as well as the supreme power. How then is it possible to bring democracy to the nation? Only Meles Zenawi can answer.

I think Meles performed well considering the grilling he took.

Any other person (say Bush) would have "cracked" wide open in my opinon.

If Meles follows and does what he told Stephen, no question about it, Ethiopians would gain.

Let us not forget he managed to open the door open for CUD. They played and succeeded.

I agree with Meles that democracy has taken root and with his continuous nurturing, it can bloom big time.

The thirty minutes interview Meles gave to Stephen clearly seem longer to Meles than the 14yrs he spent on power. I am glad to see him face a true journalist, there was no where to run. I am sure if it was possible Melese would have walked out. Mr.Stephen u the man. Ethiopian jornalists should take a note. Did i hear him mention the possibility of a new election?. Keep the pressure on my people, he start cracking already.

I almost forgot, the segment about the impartiality of the election board was really funny. I know it is not a laughing matter but Meles thought he was gonna get away with a lie. But he wasn't talking to just any journalist.

This interview will be classic for a long time to come and it did not only put Ethiopia’s prim Minster on the spot, It put all his supporters as well.

I hope the prime Minster, Tony Blair, and all those who thinks Prime Minster Melase Zenawi, is a solution to Ethiopia’s problem watch this interview and make up their mind based on his own unadulterated words.

Here is a leader who thinks that he is above the law, who gives a free hand to his security force to kill, and mime innocent unarmed citizens and turn around and call them trash that worth noting but death by a firing squad for telling him to call it quits as his policy is not working. They first voted him out and when they found out that their vote was stolen, they peacefully get out demonstrating thinking that their government will respect the constitution and grant them at least the right to vent their steam.

Here is a leader who thinks that he is the only person in the whole nation that can lead the country, no opposition is good enough to lead the country, after fourteen years of iron feast rule, miserably failed policy, the prime Minster is telling Ethiopians that the only way out for the Ethiopian people is to arm rustle power from him.

I think it is abut time for all the world leaders to call a spade a spade not because the spade happened to be theirs or some one else’s. If the hound Zimbabwe’s leader for all the atrocities he is committing, it is equally important and morally acceptable to condemned Ethiopia’s leader who is also morally repulsive.

To all participants of this forum, please:

That was a wonderful intruduction to HardTalk for me. I have never seen a person being grilled that way. That is a lesson in journalism. Thank you for a breath of fresh air. Weird as it is I am afraid of what is coming when I hear this cunning leader respond to the questions. Meles's attempt to rebound from the blows fielded at him tells me that Ethiopia is not fighting with the likes of Mengistu who depended on translators but devil incarnates who mastered the language of the Donors. Meles may be the only "leader" ruling over the people he believes are idiots. If we, the Ethiopian people, let this opportunity pass to remove him from power, we are truly doomed. Meles's 'Ton Ton Macoute' Agazis will go out in full force to finish what they began. May the Lord rebuke this devil.

What a joke. He clearly is above the law. He is the giver of Democracy..and should be thanked for allowing such an election. His self love and self agrandizement is amazing! He is a master of deception, but the world has finaly caought up with him..after 14 years and thousands he masterfully allowed to be murdered.

The guy seems to have some neurotic disorders. He can not see any one but himself. That is a known sickness to despots and dictators. They end up dead or live therest of their life in misery.

I hope he gets to his senses and resign and enjoy his loot with his friends at home.

Sir Stephen Sackur,

With people like you, I think leaders like the pm will have no chance of staying in power. You had the pm exposed, cornered and ramble for answers. I believe you’ve made it clear to the pm, that he lacks the capacity and the wisdom to lead; and time to step down immediately (I think he alluded to that, when he said, “I will serve …if I’ve value to add…and it is my party’s decision…”. I thank the pm for willing to be interviewed by you, but your well-researched and enlightening questions were no much for his poor responses. I must say that, I was ashamed by the quality of responses. Well done!

I am a tigrayan but i have to tell the truth. PM Melese Zenawi is not doing well for his country and Ethiopian people. Our families are been forced to elect him because it is only him who stood for election in mekele. he has been lying from the begining and still lying. If the vote has to be conduct again with in the the present of international observers. PM would leave the country before the final count.

I beg you PM Melese Zenawi you made your fourtune by pocketing million of dollars if not billions into swiss bank, bought a house in america and so on. We do not want to be hated by your work, arrogancy. We will live here in ethiopia. You suppose to govern ethiopian people equally that hasn't been seen since you are in power, instead you are the cause to divide this country in tribes and so on.

I want to see you burned rather than grilled.

You and your follower leave power and let us be a part of one ethiopia. We tigreans always lived in ethiopia we know how to live with them peacefully.

I thank you journalist Stephen to shake this individual for that short period of time.

all tigreans brothers and sister let us not kid ourselves to support this Dictator.
To help you understand and make your mind watch this video again.

If we have a democratic leader in the near future. Our childrens life will be full of freedom. They can live without fear and division.

Thank you for the BBC jounalist.

It is like expecting honey from a fly but the guy who claims to represent all of us on the international arena was reluctant to genuinly express his sorrow for the loss of life. I couldnt believe the guy's contempt for his own people. We have long been witnessing the guy's contempt for the notion of a unified sovereign ethiopia and the panafrican flag, But let alone as a leader but as a human being and as a person who took it upon himself to lead the country that people like wro. Etenesh reside in was filled with a smug disdain for them. It was almost as if he was stifling a compulsion to tell us all off. All I got from the interview was how much this guy hates uus and how he wouldnt give up power if it takes killing us all. And for all his supporters that think he did well I have something to say to you. During the collapse of the east camp at the end of the cold war, as the west was looking for a reliable defacto to replace mengistu, the west came across a guy that despite all his evil ideologies spoke a decent engligh. And in their ever so condescending manner they were amused by the fact that he spoke english. The guy is a treasonous coward, he is not clever he is just scheming. And the only quality the condescending Westerners saw was that he spoke english. And All y'all so called supporters of his have that west worshiping inferiority complex and you have a lesser language skill than your leader. We true hagerwedad ethiopians dont believe language skills is a deciding parameter for leadership. The west is now realizing that they were duped. And the Ethiopian people were aware all along. It is time for you sympathizers and Cadres to wake up. meles is being exposed and more is yet to come Long Live Imyie Ethiopia

I think Meles performed brilliantly, and I think his interviewer made a fool of himself. The interview was a perfect example of everything that's wrong with media coverage of Ethiopia. Rather than focusing on the really important, long term structural issues and widespread human rights abuses, nothing was discussed except the events of the past few weeks, including a ridiculously long examination of the opposition's unfounded allegations of vote rigging.

The interviewer did Meles AND Ethiopia a disservice by focusing exclusively on high profile recent events. It was amazing that Meles even had the patience to sit through the interview.

Dear Ethiopians:
First of all I like to thank all Ethiopians in general & Ethiopians in the United Kingdom in particular for your relentless hard work and public relations to bring the CRY OF ETHIOPIANS to the Americans and Europeans society's LIVING ROOM. I congratulate you on this historic interview. You have learned how to use PUBLIC RELATIONS & the WESTERN MEDIA. In the past, unlike Tigryans and Eriterians, we Ethiopians did not know how to use these powerful tool. We need to be organized and lobby more effectively to see more of the Stephen Sackur of the BBC, CNN ABC & etc. This is where the battle takes place. Citizens pay attention to their Media and Governers listen to their citizens and policy makers. Mr. Sackur, is not only coaching Melesea on how to behave under pressure and counselling him how to defend himself even when things are out of control.
As per Mr. Sacker's "HARDtalk interview," he did an excellent job. Personally, I am pleased to see such an honest and balanced interview. I wish all journalists follow the ethics of the BBC and Mr. Sackur's. In this interview the Tigryan Ethnic based Democracy was exposed. Melese the tyrant and his agenda was exposed to the whole world, and as the interview got deeper and deeper he kept on lying making himself a fool and a blood sucker. I am sure he did not expect this kind of grilled interview."He came to the interview with confidence thinking that he was going to smooth his way out of it as usual." For the first time in 14 years, he was challenged & " faced a real journalist asking him pertinent question and we saw him crumbling, sweating." For most Ethiopians, however, what Melese have said is not new. These are the issues we have been try to address for the last 14 years. What made this interview unique was the Prime Minister's body language and physical appearance such as his timid words, shaking voice and nervous body & general uneasiness. He shivered and lost all arrogant words. Unlike his previous interviews, (i.e., like the one he gave ENA on Friday June nth, 2005,) he was more subdued like a SNAKE in a bottle. He kept on lying and blaming the opposition. Furthermore, not only he spewed his poison but also he tried to present himself like a democratic leader. He talked about transparency, when in reality he was cheating and cough red handed rigging election votes and killed over 40, wounded 800 and arrested over 4000 innocent and unarmed peaceful Ethiopian citizen. Although he refused to apologize the deceased family publicly, indirectly he is begging for Marcy from the West in General and the G 8 Summit World Leaders in particular. He is also apologizing his friends like Tony Blair and George Bush for making a mess in Ethiopian politics. That is also the massage of Journalist Stephen Sacker, who seemed providing Melese more of a counseling and providing guidance on how to be more diplomatic and civil under hostile public out cry. by showing such a humble and honest face he is expecting to get not only more Foreign Aid but also the blessing of his undemocratic government. But reality he can not change the COLOR OF HIS SKIN. No matter how much he is the darling of the West, we Ethiopians are tiered of him and his ethnic based government. Enough is enough !.
Over all the interview was good and the lesson for us is to use more of the media and journalists. The story of the Election Board is one fact that came of this interview. Now we know for sure that the Election Board was created by Melese and work only for Melese and Tigryans. As far as the election results, the for gone conclusion is that, as in the past 14 years, Melese is expected to continue to rule Ethiopia.
Down with Melese, Woyane and TPLF!!
Keep the Hope Ethiopians!!
We Shall Ovecome these Tyrans!!

Thanks for the interview!

The interview was fantastic, based on facts and truths. I think we need to learn such type of journalistic interview. Though Melese was not as he used to be and unfactual, I am really proud the way he responded. I think Melse did well, but by far I was amazed by the interviewer, he has full of facts and researched the overall situation. So, jouranlist friends at home or outside like the VOA, Duetchwel, etc please learn from this and widen your scope.

The interviewer did a very good job. You should watch Hailu Shawul’s interview as well. Hailu said, if he becomes the leader of Ethiopia (god forbid) he would sell lands that is currently farmed by over 60 million destitute farmers. He plan is to sell to the former land lords and make the peasant TISEGHANS. Can somebody pass this message to Hailu for me? Ato Hailu “You are going to sell land in Oromia over dead bodies of the Oromo people also you are going to rule Oromia in the same. You are welcome to be a governor of The Amhara State.

Excellent interview, I was so proud of our PM. Don’t you people read the news papers, Meles Zenawi has been called one of the most brilliant leaders in Africa which included the former president of south Africa Nelson Mandela by the former president of the United States of America Bill Clinton. if I had not watched the program my self I would have thought that our PM ‘grilled’ and ‘broke down’ during the interview, because of most of the comments I read. But like I said before, the PM answered all the question splendidly, specially when you compare him to the opposition leader Ato Hailu Shawel, who was so narrow-minded he commented “ it was a good idea that Tony Blair cancelled the £20m aid that Ethiopia was supposed to receive.
