Meles Zenawi In a HARDtalk interview on July 4th

As world leaders gather in Scotland for the G8 meeting in Gleneagles, Africa will be the main issue on the agenda.

This week Hardtalk travels to the Africa where Stephen Sackur will be talking to people whose responsibility it is to improve the lives of Africans across the whole continent.

He starts in Ethiopia. It's one of the poorest countries in the world, but in recent years Western leaders have seen it as a beacon of hope - a country trying to drag itself out of desperate poverty with good governance.

Well, as ethiomedia.com precisely put it, Meles was `grilled`in by the tough reporters. For the first time, Meles looked desperate unlike his threatening message he sent when he was interviewd by ENA last friday. The tyrannt is exposed once again and he continued to lie , making himself a fool under the reality everyone can witness in Ethiopia. I hope he will be `grilled` more when he present himself for the international media when he visits his `buddy` Mr Blair. Long live true journalism.

Dear Stephen,

God! What do I think of the interveiw? Swell! Splendid! Excellent! I can only say THANK YOU! and I love you! We have never seen this kind of interview in 14 years of the PM reign. We are proud of you. You are a true journalist. You made us proud and smile. You made Meles Zenawi shiver and we have never ever seen him so nervous. He lost all the arrogant words he uses on us. You should do it again brother and go for Bereket Simon and you will see him shrink infront of you. They cannot cheat the Tigreans. We know what they are up to and what they have been up to when we were fighting the derge. They cannot fool us and saying they are fighting for us. They are stealing from us. Respected Stepehn, we urge you to dig and dig again and you will uncover so many things. We can assure you!!!!! Thank you!!

The barbaric dictator under the mask of democracy has been exposed to the international community.
He will never stay in power with out the will of the people of Ethiopia.
The interview clearly demonstrated the toughest skill of the journalist. Long Live true journalists.
The Grand Liar of Ethiopian prime minister was collapsed to give right answer.
Because, he was accustomed to answering 'Predesigned'questions by the Ethiopian journalists. This was no longer functional. That made him grilled.
This Evil and Crooked dictator must be forced to resign.

Dear Stephen,
Please go to Bereket Somon(minister of information), another evil. You will see him collapsed infront of you.
Because , he is lying the world under the Mask of Democracy.
He is the mastermind of Ethnic bloodshed.
He is preaching 'interhamwe'to the golden and rational people of Ethiopia.
But, no Ethiopian is following his long lasting preaching of Interhamwe.
Make him grilled like his crooked friend meles (small m).

Thank you Stephen!

You exposed the true nature of Meles Zenawi, his party, and the Electoral Board he wanted to be proud of as transparent. He must have got a new insight about himself from your interview. In fact, I can say that THE HARD TALK interview was not only an interview for Meles. Rather, it seems more of a counseling and guidance session.

Oh! what more can I say to you Stephen. Thank you again for revealing the cowardness of Meles and his government to the world. Out of his shame, he told you that the Electoral Board was established by himself when he was a president a decad a go. Really amazing! The most amazing thing for me is the touchy comment you gave him on this particular issue. Oh! very interesting!

True journalism with excellent questions, have prevailed the tyrant’s true identity. What more can we ask more than the 30 minutes Mr. Stephen's bombarded questions to expose the PM true character. No worries his day are numbered and Ethiopians will unit all across the country. There is a saying that goes "Every dog has its day".
The PM claimed Ethiopia’s economy historically increased since he took power. You know what, I have got a massage for Mr. PM, You only made Ethiopian the #1 beggar in the world since you took the office rather than creating jobs for those same unemployed youth you admitted on the interview that you opened fire and kill them not long ago. Your time is up!

Thank you

As one interviewee said not long ago, Todays breed of African leaders (especially the Tyrant MELLES) are excellent imposters, who wants to portray that they are democratic. But their true identity is not far from thier predecessors the (Mengistu's and Mobutu's)
Melles's arrogancy is breathtaking!!

First of all I think that all Ethiopians should express their sincere gratitude to the BBC, the British people and Stephen Sackur for the professionally conducted interview of the Ethiopian Premier. It was simply marvelous and we hope to get more of this kind of journalism in Ethiopia. At long last, it was time for Ethiopians to enjoy another style of interview. One that is real, professional and inquisitive. We were fed up of the pre-arranged interviews that looked like a lecture of journalists by the PM with such an arrogance that is a feature of his character. The cross-examination clearly showed that Meles Zenawi is the State in Ethiopia. He managed to make himself the sovereign as well as the supreme power. How then is it possible to bring democracy to the nation? Only Meles Zenawi can answer.

I think Meles performed well considering the grilling he took.

Any other person (say Bush) would have "cracked" wide open in my opinon.

If Meles follows and does what he told Stephen, no question about it, Ethiopians would gain.

Let us not forget he managed to open the door open for CUD. They played and succeeded.

I agree with Meles that democracy has taken root and with his continuous nurturing, it can bloom big time.

The thirty minutes interview Meles gave to Stephen clearly seem longer to Meles than the 14yrs he spent on power. I am glad to see him face a true journalist, there was no where to run. I am sure if it was possible Melese would have walked out. Mr.Stephen u the man. Ethiopian jornalists should take a note. Did i hear him mention the possibility of a new election?. Keep the pressure on my people, he start cracking already.

I almost forgot, the segment about the impartiality of the election board was really funny. I know it is not a laughing matter but Meles thought he was gonna get away with a lie. But he wasn't talking to just any journalist.

This interview will be classic for a long time to come and it did not only put Ethiopia’s prim Minster on the spot, It put all his supporters as well.

I hope the prime Minster, Tony Blair, and all those who thinks Prime Minster Melase Zenawi, is a solution to Ethiopia’s problem watch this interview and make up their mind based on his own unadulterated words.

Here is a leader who thinks that he is above the law, who gives a free hand to his security force to kill, and mime innocent unarmed citizens and turn around and call them trash that worth noting but death by a firing squad for telling him to call it quits as his policy is not working. They first voted him out and when they found out that their vote was stolen, they peacefully get out demonstrating thinking that their government will respect the constitution and grant them at least the right to vent their steam.

Here is a leader who thinks that he is the only person in the whole nation that can lead the country, no opposition is good enough to lead the country, after fourteen years of iron feast rule, miserably failed policy, the prime Minster is telling Ethiopians that the only way out for the Ethiopian people is to arm rustle power from him.

I think it is abut time for all the world leaders to call a spade a spade not because the spade happened to be theirs or some one else’s. If the hound Zimbabwe’s leader for all the atrocities he is committing, it is equally important and morally acceptable to condemned Ethiopia’s leader who is also morally repulsive.

To all participants of this forum, please:

That was a wonderful intruduction to HardTalk for me. I have never seen a person being grilled that way. That is a lesson in journalism. Thank you for a breath of fresh air. Weird as it is I am afraid of what is coming when I hear this cunning leader respond to the questions. Meles's attempt to rebound from the blows fielded at him tells me that Ethiopia is not fighting with the likes of Mengistu who depended on translators but devil incarnates who mastered the language of the Donors. Meles may be the only "leader" ruling over the people he believes are idiots. If we, the Ethiopian people, let this opportunity pass to remove him from power, we are truly doomed. Meles's 'Ton Ton Macoute' Agazis will go out in full force to finish what they began. May the Lord rebuke this devil.

What a joke. He clearly is above the law. He is the giver of Democracy..and should be thanked for allowing such an election. His self love and self agrandizement is amazing! He is a master of deception, but the world has finaly caought up with him..after 14 years and thousands he masterfully allowed to be murdered.

The guy seems to have some neurotic disorders. He can not see any one but himself. That is a known sickness to despots and dictators. They end up dead or live therest of their life in misery.

I hope he gets to his senses and resign and enjoy his loot with his friends at home.

Sir Stephen Sackur,

With people like you, I think leaders like the pm will have no chance of staying in power. You had the pm exposed, cornered and ramble for answers. I believe you’ve made it clear to the pm, that he lacks the capacity and the wisdom to lead; and time to step down immediately (I think he alluded to that, when he said, “I will serve …if I’ve value to add…and it is my party’s decision…”. I thank the pm for willing to be interviewed by you, but your well-researched and enlightening questions were no much for his poor responses. I must say that, I was ashamed by the quality of responses. Well done!

I am a tigrayan but i have to tell the truth. PM Melese Zenawi is not doing well for his country and Ethiopian people. Our families are been forced to elect him because it is only him who stood for election in mekele. he has been lying from the begining and still lying. If the vote has to be conduct again with in the the present of international observers. PM would leave the country before the final count.

I beg you PM Melese Zenawi you made your fourtune by pocketing million of dollars if not billions into swiss bank, bought a house in america and so on. We do not want to be hated by your work, arrogancy. We will live here in ethiopia. You suppose to govern ethiopian people equally that hasn't been seen since you are in power, instead you are the cause to divide this country in tribes and so on.

I want to see you burned rather than grilled.

You and your follower leave power and let us be a part of one ethiopia. We tigreans always lived in ethiopia we know how to live with them peacefully.

I thank you journalist Stephen to shake this individual for that short period of time.

all tigreans brothers and sister let us not kid ourselves to support this Dictator.
To help you understand and make your mind watch this video again.

If we have a democratic leader in the near future. Our childrens life will be full of freedom. They can live without fear and division.

Thank you for the BBC jounalist.

It is like expecting honey from a fly but the guy who claims to represent all of us on the international arena was reluctant to genuinly express his sorrow for the loss of life. I couldnt believe the guy's contempt for his own people. We have long been witnessing the guy's contempt for the notion of a unified sovereign ethiopia and the panafrican flag, But let alone as a leader but as a human being and as a person who took it upon himself to lead the country that people like wro. Etenesh reside in was filled with a smug disdain for them. It was almost as if he was stifling a compulsion to tell us all off. All I got from the interview was how much this guy hates uus and how he wouldnt give up power if it takes killing us all. And for all his supporters that think he did well I have something to say to you. During the collapse of the east camp at the end of the cold war, as the west was looking for a reliable defacto to replace mengistu, the west came across a guy that despite all his evil ideologies spoke a decent engligh. And in their ever so condescending manner they were amused by the fact that he spoke english. The guy is a treasonous coward, he is not clever he is just scheming. And the only quality the condescending Westerners saw was that he spoke english. And All y'all so called supporters of his have that west worshiping inferiority complex and you have a lesser language skill than your leader. We true hagerwedad ethiopians dont believe language skills is a deciding parameter for leadership. The west is now realizing that they were duped. And the Ethiopian people were aware all along. It is time for you sympathizers and Cadres to wake up. meles is being exposed and more is yet to come Long Live Imyie Ethiopia

I think Meles performed brilliantly, and I think his interviewer made a fool of himself. The interview was a perfect example of everything that's wrong with media coverage of Ethiopia. Rather than focusing on the really important, long term structural issues and widespread human rights abuses, nothing was discussed except the events of the past few weeks, including a ridiculously long examination of the opposition's unfounded allegations of vote rigging.

The interviewer did Meles AND Ethiopia a disservice by focusing exclusively on high profile recent events. It was amazing that Meles even had the patience to sit through the interview.

Dear Ethiopians:
First of all I like to thank all Ethiopians in general & Ethiopians in the United Kingdom in particular for your relentless hard work and public relations to bring the CRY OF ETHIOPIANS to the Americans and Europeans society's LIVING ROOM. I congratulate you on this historic interview. You have learned how to use PUBLIC RELATIONS & the WESTERN MEDIA. In the past, unlike Tigryans and Eriterians, we Ethiopians did not know how to use these powerful tool. We need to be organized and lobby more effectively to see more of the Stephen Sackur of the BBC, CNN ABC & etc. This is where the battle takes place. Citizens pay attention to their Media and Governers listen to their citizens and policy makers. Mr. Sackur, is not only coaching Melesea on how to behave under pressure and counselling him how to defend himself even when things are out of control.
As per Mr. Sacker's "HARDtalk interview," he did an excellent job. Personally, I am pleased to see such an honest and balanced interview. I wish all journalists follow the ethics of the BBC and Mr. Sackur's. In this interview the Tigryan Ethnic based Democracy was exposed. Melese the tyrant and his agenda was exposed to the whole world, and as the interview got deeper and deeper he kept on lying making himself a fool and a blood sucker. I am sure he did not expect this kind of grilled interview."He came to the interview with confidence thinking that he was going to smooth his way out of it as usual." For the first time in 14 years, he was challenged & " faced a real journalist asking him pertinent question and we saw him crumbling, sweating." For most Ethiopians, however, what Melese have said is not new. These are the issues we have been try to address for the last 14 years. What made this interview unique was the Prime Minister's body language and physical appearance such as his timid words, shaking voice and nervous body & general uneasiness. He shivered and lost all arrogant words. Unlike his previous interviews, (i.e., like the one he gave ENA on Friday June nth, 2005,) he was more subdued like a SNAKE in a bottle. He kept on lying and blaming the opposition. Furthermore, not only he spewed his poison but also he tried to present himself like a democratic leader. He talked about transparency, when in reality he was cheating and cough red handed rigging election votes and killed over 40, wounded 800 and arrested over 4000 innocent and unarmed peaceful Ethiopian citizen. Although he refused to apologize the deceased family publicly, indirectly he is begging for Marcy from the West in General and the G 8 Summit World Leaders in particular. He is also apologizing his friends like Tony Blair and George Bush for making a mess in Ethiopian politics. That is also the massage of Journalist Stephen Sacker, who seemed providing Melese more of a counseling and providing guidance on how to be more diplomatic and civil under hostile public out cry. by showing such a humble and honest face he is expecting to get not only more Foreign Aid but also the blessing of his undemocratic government. But reality he can not change the COLOR OF HIS SKIN. No matter how much he is the darling of the West, we Ethiopians are tiered of him and his ethnic based government. Enough is enough !.
Over all the interview was good and the lesson for us is to use more of the media and journalists. The story of the Election Board is one fact that came of this interview. Now we know for sure that the Election Board was created by Melese and work only for Melese and Tigryans. As far as the election results, the for gone conclusion is that, as in the past 14 years, Melese is expected to continue to rule Ethiopia.
Down with Melese, Woyane and TPLF!!
Keep the Hope Ethiopians!!

The interview was fantastic, based on facts and truths. I think we need to learn such type of journalistic interview. Though Melese was not as he used to be and unfactual, I am really proud the way he responded. I think Melse did well, but by far I was amazed by the interviewer, he has full of facts and researched the overall situation. So, jouranlist friends at home or outside like the VOA, Duetchwel, etc please learn from this and widen your scope.

The interviewer did a very good job. You should watch Hailu Shawul’s interview as well. Hailu said, if he becomes the leader of Ethiopia (god forbid) he would sell lands that is currently farmed by over 60 million destitute farmers. He plan is to sell to the former land lords and make the peasant TISEGHANS. Can somebody pass this message to Hailu for me? Ato Hailu “You are going to sell land in Oromia over dead bodies of the Oromo people also you are going to rule Oromia in the same. You are welcome to be a governor of The Amhara State.

Excellent interview, I was so proud of our PM. Don’t you people read the news papers, Meles Zenawi has been called one of the most brilliant leaders in Africa which included the former president of south Africa Nelson Mandela by the former president of the United States of America Bill Clinton. if I had not watched the program my self I would have thought that our PM ‘grilled’ and ‘broke down’ during the interview, because of most of the comments I read. But like I said before, the PM answered all the question splendidly, specially when you compare him to the opposition leader Ato Hailu Shawel, who was so narrow-minded he commented “ it was a good idea that Tony Blair cancelled the £20m aid that Ethiopia was supposed to receive. Your country will look to you to exercise your trust with responsibility. We will look to you to be concerned not only with commercial check and balance sheets, but also with democratic checks and balances; not only with avoiding red ink. but also with preventing red dictatorship. The penality for irresponsibility will be more serious for the nation than revocation of the nwes papers license. If this is too much responsibility for you, you should not be involved in international television.

I did not watch the interview of the Ethiopian PM, but form the many euphoric reactions on this web site; I presume he had a terrible day. Now everyone knows that he is not a very good impostor! UK is one of the biggest donors of aid to the current Ethiopian government and the PM did not have a choice but to accept the BBC request for interview. This is a big gamble that may have backfired but he is also known to have survived far more serious incidents in the past.

My personal view is that the PM desecrated the founding and guiding principles of the TPLF and tarnished the hard earned victory of our fallen heroes. Like his predecessors, he is in the process of digging his own grave and there we go again.

After reading most of the comments on this site, I am beginning to realize that Ethiopia as a nation was and is a myth that existed only in the minds of a very few group of people who persistently tried to shove it down the throat of everyone to preserve their own rule.
A society without a collective believe of what is right and what is wrong, a society without deep rooted collective senses of belief and commitment to standup for justice for all, and not just for its own kind can not dwell under the same roof or stand the test of time.
I asked this question before and I will ask it again. Where was the collective sense of outrage of Ethiopians when mass murderers were being committed by Hailessilassie and later by Mengstu in Eritrea and Tigray? How do you propose to have a country called Ethiopia when you enabled, supported and never took responsibility for the mass killings your rulers committed on your behalf? In my opinion, a nation of over 60 million people watched indifferently and or supported Mengstu with over one million soldiers to committee “ethnic cleansing”. A nation of over 70 million is now watching the persecution of Oromo and other ethnic groups.

There could only be an Ethiopia of the willing and most people do not enter into a partnership of extermination. How about 13 additional African states?

Today, again you did a wonderful interview with Mr Hailu Shawel. He shamelessly told us that he will sell the lands of our poor farmers if he become the next PM. He is dreaming to buy the lands of our poor farmers with the money his parents grabed from the same farmers during the past feudal regime. But, who can tell him that this would be real only on the grave of these poor farmers sons and daughters. His party's vision is only for the feudal remenants. But, time is up for such an outdated politician.

So, you did it.

The one who doesn't tell his/her illness cannot get medicine (Beshitawun yemaynager medihanit ayagegnmi). But, many still try to hide the cancerous political disease of this country. These few cowardic segement of the population set their self-serving standard of Ethiopianism and try to command the majority to abide by their ill-defined standard. They are always allergic to those who speak for justice. Not surprisingly, it is this disease which is also speeding up the demise of the myth.

Calm down every one!

Melese at this interview looks very professional. He looks like a leader and collected with wider views. If you want to see very narrow views look at Mr. Hailus interview by the same journalist.

As the topic says this is a HARD TALK. It is known to ask questions and ask again before you get a reply to the first one to confuse one.

In prospect Melese did well as a foreign leader and an persuasive speaker.

Here is where all ends for me. I am not sure Melese is a real Ethiopian leader or ready to sell more land to Eritrea. I am not sure he a tribal war lord who like to start war between each tribe and subdivide the country or not. In comparison Mr. Hailu and friends like Negede Gobeaze were the once time Dergue leaders who have been killing our friends and families with “RED TERROR”. Now there is crocodile tears flowing out of them.

You may think I am wrong, since you all commented about Melese interview. Melese may leave his post or resign. Remember you are not getting a democrat.

Dear Skidane or should I say Mr. Meles or an Eritrean in disguise. For your information Ethiopia is no myth, and has been mentioned in The Bible and The Koran numerous times.

If our leaders, like the likes of Meles, only knew that they are not coroneted but only put to office by the people we wouldn't have such a problem there would be smooth transition of power from one political power and back if the people so choose. The problem with Africa in general and Ethiopia in particular is that the leaders think that they personally own the land and won't let go till they literaly drop dead and there are also so many others who would want to get to power too and loot and they see that dividing up the country is the only way that would make them leaders and give them free reign on the resources of the country.
And as for the Ethnic cleansing you discussed about, all Ethiopians suffered at the hand of the Derg. I remember a time where we had to walk by corpses to go to school in the Capital city Addis Abeba and when there wasn't a family in the city who didn't have a son/daughter either dead or in prison. And about what is happening to the Oromos and to other tribes now, ask your cousin Meles for he is the one with the gun and is committing all kinds of atrocities on us.

I am one of the guys who has watched the interview by Stephen Sacker. Firstly with PM Meles and on the next day by Ato Hailu.

With Meles: Meles was reluctant to tell the truth, rather attempted to camouflage his wrongdoing by beating around the bush. He never answered questions since he has come to power sincerly. He thinks that he is smart enough to mask his thought.
The danger of Meles is that he never admits his failure, instead he projects his failure over other bodies. This is his unchanged behaviour for years.
His arguements sometimes lead nowhere. He plays only with words to deceive others but with no empact.

As far as Ato Hailu is concerned:
His answers were short and natural.
His gesture tells his internal feeling. Nothing to hide. He is a benevolent person.
Ato Hailu spoke honestly and he did not use idiomatic expressions as Meles did to draw attention of the HardTalk.
The questions were real questions that anybody was aware of what has happend in the entire nation.
Ato Hailu is a man of action, he spent most of his time by architecture/engineering rather than politics. Meles spent more than 30 years by discussing, confronting and intriguing. No wonder he applies rhetoric to attract his counterparts. All ain all Meles is jack of all trades but master of none.

Meles is now an all-to-do minister.
He is commander in chief of the army, police and security.
Even the dictator Mengistu had no such a monopolised power.

Sorry for the Ethiopian people that he stays for another 5 year on power.

The interview, no doubt, was a shocking experience to the Prime Minister. He didn't expect to be asked some of the questions and so he couldn't answer them to the satisfaction of the interviewer. He became like the blind guy who was in a dark room looking for a black cat which doesn't really exist.

It is abvious that the CUD leader, Hailu Shawul have extremely ready to put on sale the whole Oromo land and southern. Well, the people of those two states should wake up and do their own homework in very fassionable way. They should oppose to his plan, be it to fight out by any means available to them because there is no Amhara Land that can be viable for foreign investiment. It is very interesting to see his own reflection on how he plans to do that and the connection that he got with foreign investors abroad. He want to rob our people as his leaders did to us in the past. I know that we all are unhappy with the current government but we better compare them with much worest to come with these thugs in the ruling position. We need to keep these thugs at the bay for very good reasons. Naftagha Amharas cannot bring any democracy but they can only bring more trouble, more missery, more distitute, more diseases, more poverty, more crimes against humanity, more amharanization, more amhara cultural hegemony, more blood thirsty suckers to loot and rape our land. Hell no to these thugs.

This is how much Meles and all other African dictators misunderstand what it means to be a leader of a country.
It was a good interview that put Meles the fox in a corner. There was no escaping this time.

Dear Ethiopia, no Myth

I encourage you to find out more about the references to “Al Habasha” and or Ethiopia in the holy books. These references by themselves don’t prove past or present existence of a social group called “Ethiopians” with shared values and beliefs that transcend their diversity. The real proof lies in the past, the present and what is to become of Ethiopia. Furthermore, you will be disappointed to find out that the exact geographical area referred to in the holy books does not coincide with your definition of the boundaries of your Ethiopia.

With respect to my “ethnic cleansing” charges, you are absolutely right.
Mengstu brought death and destruction to every household in Ethiopia.
However, the death and destruction started in Eritrea after the end of WWII.
The Hailesellasie regime committed mass murders in Eritrea since the early 1960s. He starved millions of people in Tigray and Wolo.
When Mengstu took over in 1974, and rallied his “Wedo Zematch” militia, the slogan of the day was “Hulum wed semyen”. Eritrea and Tigray were the focus of the whole nation and took the brunt of Mengstu’s mass murders.

You were and are indifferent. Millions of Ethiopians were and are still indifferent. They will cry foul if the atrocities are committed against their kind “Weghenachn”.
By your own admission, you said you went about your business even though the streets of Addis Ababa were littered with dead bodies.
You told me to ask my cousin Meles abut the present day persecution of the Oromo and other nationalities.
The youth of Eritrea and Tigray did not walk over the dead bodies of their countrymen and go about their daily business. They stood up, challenged the status qua and gave their lives to overthrow a group of low life common criminals. If you visit the plains of Tenbein, the mountains and rolling hills of Sahel etc, you will find the graves of many heroic people who paid the ultimate price and usher the beginning of a new and better era for Ethiopia. You will also find the remains of savages criminals who raped and killed many innocent civilians.

The current government has its problems and the PM is dancing on the grave of the very people who gave so much to free their country, but this are better times for Ethiopia than the collective brutality of the last 100 years. This is the beginning of something that could turnout to be worthwhile all the suffering and struggle.
If you truly care about your country and countrymen, you have to do better than stepping over dead bodies and flapping your gums. You have a social responsibility to make a difference.

A nation of indifferent people will never standup the test of time. That is a time proven experience of many systems around the globe.

I watched both melese and Hailu's interview. Every one has his own saying. Reading your comments and comparing the two leaders (the ruling and the main opposition) I add my comment.
I believe Melese is far better than Hailu in a way of responding for the interveiwer. The things that I didn't like from Melese is that he became bord and angery in the middel of the interview. It would be better if melese showed a smily and positive attraction as Mr. Shawel did. Melese also failed to show facts in a descriptive manner. However, Hailu Shawel was not even comparable to Melese. One idea that both seems to agree is that re-election is very good to stabilize the tense situation.
The things I realized from the interview is that Hailu was part of the regiment during the red-terror. That is enough for me to denounce him to be the leader for the country. If CUD win,I prefer that they should have put another leader to be the head of state. I know that CUD has many wise and modern ppl. after all it seems that he (Mr. Shawel) is old to run with the fast running new generation. I also suggest that it would be better for all if Melese give the power to a new transitional governmnet, so that the CUDs with UFED and perhaps EPRDF works together for a new government.

Let God give wisdom to these leaders.

(3) the virtual judge put him into death.

Hailu Showel:

(1) not a political speaker. May be a practical man.
(2) his answers seem from his heart
(3) he himself was under the cross examination of the attorney.
(4) did not answer the questions politically well, but handled them ok

The farmer after owning it, can reject the selling or we could agitate them not to sell their lands or tell them the consequences they face after selling their lands. Let us fight for the true democracy first which all the oppositions trying to work out. Not Woyanes/EPRDF's "FALSE" democray. We Oromo people should not be the fertile land for Woyane/EPRDFs Policy and ethnic bias . You know that Ato Hailu has Oromo blood? All the oppositions are working to build the whole Ethiopia not to destruct Ethiopia and give lands of Ethioipia to Eritrea. Think twice do not work for them work for your people all. Comment from: Kitaba Motoma [Visitor] I am one of the guys who has watched the interview by Stephen Sacker. As far as Ato Hailu is concerned: His answers were short and natural.

Ouma! It doesn't matter whether you are oromo or neftegna. But what you have to know is that the oromo people and its land should not be a fertile land neother to EPRDF nor CUD thugs evil political agenda. Both are enemies of Oromo and the South poor. Now it is not the time to argue on whether the land is truely owened by farmers or not. But what you should not miss is people took this land out of the hands of the yeaster years naftegna thugs. However, the sons of these naftegna thugs today came up with a seemgly new policy of land privetization in order return what their fathers have lost in the past by the strugle of the poor. After all, this thug have no any moral standard to talk about the land leave alone privetization of it. Down with EPRDF and CUD!!!!!!!!

Both interviews were splendid! Well done Stepehn. I don't want to comment about Meles Zenawi as he has made a fool out of himself and most important of all he made a fool out of Ethiopians. But he is not an Ethiopian. Stepehn, it would have been better if you have asked him about the book he wrote. he is an Eritrean and to be honest we really don't care what he says now as he has truly shown himself.

Regrding Engineer Shawl, I want to say well done Engineer. You might not be an orator like Dr. Berhnau or Lidetu but you are a ture professional and diplomat. You have transffered the image of the party and the Ethiopian people and we are very hapy. Whether you become President, PM or Paliament Member we are behind you. Congtatualtions for the success you have managed to get until now and most important of all for beleiving in the unity of Ethiopia, in one "HEzeb" , one "FLAG" and one country. Keep it up!

I was very happy as i saw the hard talk with Meles. The brilliant journalist revealed to the rest of the world how Meles lies, how his camoflage of democracy does not exist, how dictator he is and his only interest for his power, but not to ethiopia.Thank you for your good deeds Stephen.
As I saw Haulu`s Interview yesterday, his communication Ability and substance does not represent the noble ideas of the opposition. Birhanu or Merara could have done much better to reflect the grave Situation in ethiopia to the rest of the World. Please Ato, Hailu, you are not orator enough for the westerners to trust in you. You do not probably know what the westerners want to hear about to attract sympathy and support. We respect your courage but these days we need more than that.Think serious about it, otherwise the evil prolonges his tyrant to ethiopia.

I saw the interview of both leaders,Meles and Hailu. My overall analysis of the result is i favour of Meles. I mean Meles did well in the interview, and much better than Hailu. It is regretable that Meles didnot admit responsibility for the killings of demonstrators. He says he advocates for basic democratic rights, but that was a poor manifestation of it. Otherwise question on the independency of the Electoralboard and its responibility and the answer given by Meles puts the result for the investigation of malpractices during the election and the counting process in very much doubt. Hailu is not eloquent in his presentation and his answers to the questions he was asked were vague. He can be genuine in his thoughts for the country, his talent of expresion is very poor.

He does not even remember the few press releases he issued. ofcourse it was a denial! But, ugly of all was extrawords (afelafi)- 'Ethiopans bahave differently under different circumstances'. Shame on him!!
PM Melese Zenawi is principled and competent to lead this country. Please let us reorganise this CUD again in a different form as it is folling appart so that we can have a strong and healthy opposition.

First of all I would like to thank Stephen Sackur for your intelligent questions that show the true picture of Meles Zenawi and his government. Relatively I saw Melese's qualities of leadership talent to use his Alliance to show the world as a democratic leader as well as to maintain his parties (EPDRF) long term plan which was developing the one ethnic group Tigrians. And destroying and dismantling the 3000 years Ethiopia and Ethiopians. This could bring a big ethnic clumsy. And do the world peace loving people still accept Meles Zenawi as a good leader?
The other amazing thing, Is Eritrea independent country? I don’t think so The Eritrean is still on power in Ethiopia the world should condemn such a cheat.

Thank you BBC

That would be a party more dangerous for peace and development of Ethiopia even than the current government. Therefore, we Ethiopians should be united to keep at bay these bunch of greedy hodamoch.

It was clicked on my head when I heard the name Hailu shawul. I know the name but I wasn't sure until this interview tells me that he is the colonel Mengistu’s member H. Shawl. If he is not absolute unworthy layer it doesn't take two months live alone two years to identify colonel Mengistu (Dergu) regime was absolutely a killer regime. Collective of butcher and power hunger military and intellectuals supported by illiterate cadres’ party members. as I believe you the westerners and the mass peace loving democratic leaders if you want to help truly the mass Ethiopian people to the true democratic transition all political parties member including the existing regime must have absolute clean profile or history for the last 40-45 years if not any excuse Mengistus Hile Fidas, Negede Gobeze's, Senay Like's or the so called EPRP's members and the so called Oromos or what ever ethnic parties who have the history of killing will not take Ethiopia to any better life forget democracy you will find more misery and killing after 4 days while they are on power. Dear ethiopian cetizen
first of all are we realy a need of cange or are we a need of democracy?
If we want change, that is fine, but if we are realy a need of democracy we should not comment only one party. We should comment both party leaders who did interview with BBC.
If you believe in democracy we should wait for the out coming of election result.
Before all DR Hailu was asked that if he could accept if EPRDF win the election, his answer was "before we accept any thing, the things must be investigated".The jonalist was asked him again the same question the answer was the same. And also intead expressing things in words the DR was shaking his head.At this time, I was in doubt of his boby langauge.
I was not sure that he was one party leader. If you remember the jornalist was showing the document from his office and he was deniying.
On my side melese was pretty good; more cofident and self steamed.
Think all Ethiopian citizen it does't mater what the person look like you also said that for Col Mengistu too.
Does't mater who ever had good thinking for Ethiopian people, that person is good person.we don't care what he look like.
Our country need a realable person and who has self confidence. If I singn agreement I have to respect what I singned. But DR Hailu opposed himself by rejecting the deal which he singned with EPRDF and ingaging the people of Ethiopia for ethnic clensing.
In USA in the year 2004 election Jhon Kerry lost in such point By opposing his own signiture.
To gain poletical leadership we have to be honest and we do't have to put inocient young people in the fire.
As I seen DR Hailu had an American accent that means he lived in USA.
Including DR Hailu and the EthioAmericans never learned from election 2000 in USA?
G.W.Bush and Algore were in big poletical fight which was based on democracy.Algore win the popular vote but by any ways Presedent G.W.Bush took the presedency.
Here is the remarkable wiseness of democracy, Algore never fought against Bush. He said "still we all Americans and I will work with presedent Bush" by showing him respect.
G.w.Bush himself never dismentled what domocrats did to the country.
Still he started from where the democrats stoped.
Why we always trying to start new agenda on every new government? And when we are going to work for same country contineously with out stoping and with out breaking down each other's job?
We have to know that Meles him self and also the people who died in that soil all our citizen.
Citizens let's solve our problem around the table.
We are realy poor.If one party asking aid the western for our country, another party refusing the western aid, who got hurt? still the Ethiopian people. For what? for poletical benefit.
We do't have to shaw patriotism on our own people. They all citizen.
Specialy those who live in abroad we don't have to give meaningless hope for our people and we don't have to biuld anger and tenssion puting them on risk.Becuase we are here that is why?
Let's excersice democracy intead of
biuling anger and violent. At least the beam of democracy rising in that soil for the first time.Let's use it.
In the end my condolences for who passed away in the last demonistration.

To all ETHIOPIAN,
Ethiopia is in a daunting poverty.
EPRDF has been tested for the last 14 years. It bring nothing except ethnic violence and hatred.
The International Food Policy Research Institute has announed 30 million Ethiopians in chronic food insecurity, here in its Office (Washington). What would be the solution to escape this unmitigated poverty?
What is important for Ethiopia is a good economic policy, a consolidated democracy, and culture of toleration among the diverse groups.
Whether you call it CUD, UEDF or any other party, what is important is a new government with a new vision and mission than the tired, old, decayed and moribund EPRDF.

Dear Stephen,
You, my dear, are a typical example of the frivolous and irresponsible type of populistic journalist without giving a care if a million Africans or more might get killed in genocidal attempts due to the kind of inflammatory, oversimplified and dangerous Pnadora's box style mayhem you are about to unleash. Knowing that your famous forefather stood for wide scale sales of Africans where black gold counted far more than human rights, I for one am not surprised by the way you demonize our great prime minister, Meles, perhaps the best PM the country ever had, despite the minor blemishes spread and nurtured by the kind of people in "Diaspora", whom you seem to enjoy the company of. Have you ever thought of the digital divide that places those people at a great advantage against the majority of Ethiopians, who have never had access to comment on your otherwise ententaining but superficial HARDTALK? Have you ever thought of finding out what they want? Do they count at all in your log book? Or do you still prefer to enrage the gullible and the misguided who think the way to power is not through the ballots but through the kind of name-calling you are wallowing in?

Keep it up and one day you might even succeed to tarnish the highly respected name of the great BBC.
Thank you

It is not coincidences that Hardtalk of BBC is considered as one of tough program on the earth for any politicians (another one is the American 'meet the press') or decision makers. The program is build on presumptions that the guests are very professions and familiars with the media interviews so they would try maneuvering any program to focus on the points they want to get across to the audiences. Or to the issues they come with answers prepared ahead. Therefore, the strategy of the program is to tackle from the very beginning the guests with as much as many hard questions in range of topics without letting them enough time to think how to manipulate them. Indeed this strategy often mange to out of balance even charismatic politicians whose English is their native language and forced them discovering their real motives, nature and characters. Given these facts I think mr. Melse did well even in western standards. On the contrary mr. Shawul performances was very poor, he was'nt talktive as oppositin leader expected to be, after all media and tv in particular is the only tool the opposition has to confront successfully the government by using its only advantage of not holding any position in government or responsibility and as such was free of doing mistake.I think the differences in the preformances of both are found in the audiences they asked to address to. While the pm address to the western public opinion and such used prefctly the Opportunity of being host by prestigious british madia to introduce him self as prograsive and moderate person who work hard to bring the values of democracy and rules of law to the country who never know in his history these values. mr. Shawul addresses was to his supporters and as result he mis the opportunity to potrait him self positivly in the western public opinion country.on contrary to mr. zanawi mr. shawul also didn’t mange to portraited negatively the pm nor he presented well planed program in case he would chosen. More than that, by rejecting the idea of debt cancellation to Ethiopia. He portraited himself negatively as one who ready to harm the Ethiopian public interest for his political motives.

In conclusion
I don’t know both of them to decide which of them might be good prime minister, but on the Hardtalk of bbc mr. Mels looks more sophisticate person who could deal with complicate issues rather than mr. Shawul who looks naïve which is not bad. but to leads huge country like Ethiopia it needed more than that.

The format of HardTalk is great. This is perhaps the best interview that I have ever watched. It did a great service for Ethiopians. The interviewer was asking Meles Zenawi as if Stephen was a CUD supporter and interviewed Hailu Shawel as if he was an EPRDF supporter. So this way you get both points of views which was great. If you noticed, when asked about the 90% winning claim by CUD to Meles, Stephen did not even question it and then on the next day with Ato Hailu, he pressed on to find out where the proof is for the CUD's claim. The interviewer was first class, he really represented Ethiopians and asked the tough questions. That is what a real journalisim is all about.

Paulos Yrgaw(07/06/05)

I am astounded. In fact, I am flabbergasted. I could add more, if I was able to express my otherwise wretched emotions. In Western philosophical niche, they call it, "Cretan Paradox". If a Cretan says, "all Cretans are liars", the Cretan is a liar as well, and by the same token, it implies that, all Cretans do not lie. Hence, it is a paradox. Shawl is paradoxical or he is in a paradox. Either way you vantage it, he is contradicting himself. The sad thing is, he doesn’t know it. The whole thing started when the astonished Sacker (a host of HardTalk) asked the nervous and fast-blinking Shawl, if it is alright for the donor nations to help Ethiopia with aid money. Shawl responded by saying that, the aid should be channeled to a specific project. Fair enough. Shawl went on to say that, the donor countries shouldn’t give the money to Meles and his government for they can not be trusted. And Sacker with a more astounded look, asked Shawl if Meles has been duping the Western leaders, a man who has been hailed and praised by them invariably as a man who is doing a modest job for his country. Here is where the bomb went off. Shawl told Sacker that, the Western leaders are not cognizant of our culture (read deceptive culture, according to Shawl that is), if they had known, they wouldn’t have given money to Meles which is meant to be for the betterment of the poor people. Here, there are two important noteworthy points. First, Shawil, the man who is not endowed with Weberian charisma, is insulting the intelligence of Western leaders. Maybe, the Western leaders were born at mid-night but surely, it was not last night. Second, the feeble minded Shawl is telling the Western leaders that, if I ever become Prime Minster (God forbid), and if I ever stand at your door steps asking for money, please do not trust me for I am the product of my deceiving culture.

I should say that, my nightmare has come to reality. Finally, I have heard it from the horse’s mouth. As the fading eyes are looking for justice through the caskets, the executioner in a guise of democracy is again in a full swing to slide Ethiopia back into the banality of evil, if I can use Hannah Arendt’s notable _expression. What is more worse is, the roar and commotion of the followers. The short memory span of the followers reflects the betrayal of the fallen heroes whose blood is still echoing through out the land when the executioner with an utter audacity is telling us that, it is fine to be implicated in the infamous Red Terror and sleep on power of a green pasture. Admittedly, Shawl worked for the Red Terror regime for two full years. In an attempt to cover his behind, he also said that, he had to keep his tail between his legs in order to raise his children. Let us roll the clock backward into the 1970s. As the Red Terror bullets penetrated the hearts of fathers, brothers, sisters, blue-collars, white collars, the whole spectrum, the fathers could have dodged the bullets in different ways. They could have fled the country; they could have joined the colonel; they could have made a permanent residence in the mountains. But they didn’t. Simply because, they had integrity, passion, principle and most of all love of the Patria. The coward shawl does not have any of these. What he has is a weak heart, a feeble mind and un-Ethiopian spirit, hence he belongs to the dungeons of justice. Doing otherwise is a travesty and a disservice to our heroes whose sacrifice gave the riff-raffs of history the likes of Shawl and his replicas a scent of democracy who are now determined to turn it into a foul scenery.

At times the PM looked a bit defensive and at times even angry but over all he came out looking well informed. He was direct and to the point when answering questions even if he sounded repetitive at times. Most of his answers if not all were well thought of and he used a clear and unambiguous language in expressing them. Over all he was eloquent even when he was pushed by the interviewer to address some inconsistencies.
However he came across as an old African dictator when the interviewer raised the issue of those murdered youth during the protest that took place in Addis. When asked to apologize to the loved once of those killed he didn’t want to give a clear and heart felt apology. Instead he tried to argue if the use of force was legitimate or not. It seems to me even if the use of force was necessary; arguing technicality in the face of tragedy was uncalled for.
The opposition leader Mr. Hailu Shawel did much worth in my opinion. In the face of un-refuted evidence he gave an out right denial. Even when asked if the demonstration was organized by the CDU, which any person with a common sense knows it was he denied it out of hand. Then the interviewer asked if Mr. Shawel agrees with PM Blair’s decision to hold back the 20 billion pounds in aid money promised to Ethiopia. In rather un-classy yet predictably selfish manner that one expects from power hungry despot Mr. Shawel answered of course.
In Ethiopia where the threat of famine is always around and the need for food and clean water is always in demand such an answer is not only politically unwise but it is humanely cruel. But that prospect doesn’t seem to faze Mr. Shawel because he wants to be the next leader of Ethiopia and if it takes the death of thousands of people from lack of food and clean water so be it as far as he is concerned. That is a clear sign of a despot that people have grown to despise all over the world. A man who has spent two years in the leadership position under the derg administration is showing his true colors. As far as the truth is concerned he has never called for such a measure when Mengistu was in power. But yet now when he is running for his party’s leadership in what most observers have considered a free and fare election he is calling for one. If that is not a sing of a despot I don’t know what is.
But the most abhorrent part of his nonsensical diatribe came when he was confronted with the question of why he wanted to boycott the parliament. His answer is not only inconsistent with the principles of democracy as the interviewer put it but it smells of greedand envy. Greed for the simple fact that he didn’t take in to consideration what people who voted for his party want. Envy because he didn’t want to see other party succeeding when his is failing. That reminds me of an old Amhara saying “ene kemoteku serdo aybekel”.
Zero sum mentality is what has in the past brought Ethiopia to a brink of an imaginable disaster, be it during the Hailesellassie regime or during the derg regime. I suggest let us put those mistakes of the past behind us and work for a better Ethiopia. That is easier said than done for obvious reasons but unless we realize our loyalty to a party or an ethnic groups is less important than our loyalty to Ethiopia we have still long ways to go and I have a serious doubt if we ever get there.

People:

What matters is not speaking the English language, but being honest and a man/woman of the people. Hailu demonstrated that! He was honest and spoke from the bottom of his heart. He is not a liar and that makes him not a politician. Look at how Meles mumbled when asked hard questions. He mumbled and got angry because he was trapped and his lies could not escape him.

Hi Everybody,

Is this the Guy that is expected to be the next Ethiopian leader? Do Ethiopians have any common sense left? Look in this short interview he killed himself fast. He has neither the form nor the content to be a leader. Belive me the West has already known who he is. His embaracing points.

1) He completely denied the press release issued by his CUD and he could not be sophsticated infront of a journalist who told him that he is sure about it. He is lier
2) He tried to present himself as the only and first Ethiopian who told the Dergue that it was wrong to carry out the Red Terror. When chanllanged if it takes two long years to know that the peasant looking opposition leader said he has children so that he has to live with that act of Red Terror. ISn't this lie and contradiction. He also angrily attaked the journalist as not doing his homework. The western diplomats must have taken note of that.
3) He attacked the western leaders as being duped by Meles and called Tony Blair as Naive. He opposed more aide and debt cancellation for the country he is desperately trying to lead. IF he does not become a leader, then please don't give aid.

Now compare this to Meleses

1. Challange that the practice of nominating oficials and apointees by the head of state is a normal practice in democracy as long as the parliament approves them? He chanllanged the journalist if this is different in Europe which the journalist gave up and passed to his next question.
2. Showed the inconsistencies of the oppositions in contradicting themselves as rejecting the vote first in Addis Ababa and later on accepting it and the journalist used this to sweat Hailu later on.
3. Impressively told the journalist that releasing aid is not a condition for admiring Tony Blair as serious person to help Africa
4. Challanged the journalist as starting his question from a wrong premises that the BOard of ellection is impartial. He told the journalist that the opposition have agreed upon a set of criteria used to screen the complaints. The journalist took this point from the Prime Minister and told Hailu that he cannot have both ways as allaging the government as anti-democracy and engaging himself in the democratic process.

In short, Meles performed much, much better. Hailu looked like a chaiperson of local Edirs and I know that he cannot lead Ethiopia for days, let alone to drag it out from its extreme poverty.
It is not difficult to know that the west would not consider Hailu as an alternative to Meles and Meles would continue to enjoy their supoort. Honestly Hailu should have declined this interview and his agreement shows his naivity.

I rally for the opposition, but I was so disappointed with Ato Hailu. He made a fool out of himself and Ethiopian people. How can one expect a person that doesn't have the political maturity to know that you have to work with the west to be in power and when in power, rather insult Tony Blair? Sir you are a disappointment. If you can not attack the prime Minster and Bereket with all the fault they did or articulate their mistake, what kind of politician are you. I had to stop reading through the comments already posted... they might as well all be written by the same person. How is it that we "Ethiopians" have an unbelievable tendency to completely dismiss one of our own, in favor of a "Ferenji" with an abrasive and combative journalistic approach who waltz into our country and show no respect for our people and their representatives?
The following day, the same reporter interviewed the opposition leader with the same "in your face" tabloid journalist approach, that should have been unacceptable under the circumstance. There is a certain decorum expected when interviewing heads of states. This in my opinion is just the same old disrespect the western world has maintained towards Africans in general, and we apparently seem to accept and even sometime "enjoy" it.

A good exmaple of the corruption is the Atlanta New Taxi company oppend by Arekebe's relative. Where does the buisness run by Meles's wife come from? From no where?

Woyanes have to do little to show the donor countries that they are utilizing the money appropriately. They used it to the people may be 1(one)% of what has been donated, the rest goes to their personal accounts elsewhere.

Hi Berehan, I do agree with you that you don`t need to be an excellent in English to be a leader of a country. Remember that in today`s world any African leader should be able to communicate in one of the known languages. Since Ethiopia is one of the East African countries, a leader must be able to communicate or express himself in English. This is the only way!!! We have seen from the interview how shameful it was with Hailu Shawel!! To be honest, how this guy is going to communicate with the West tomorrow?? In case if he is elected!!! I hope not, NO NO NO!!!
In fact, if he has to give order to local leaders to get him honey and butter as his naftagna ancestors did, he does not need any major world languages!!!
O poor Hailu Shawel!! how can you insult all Ethiopians in saying "Ethiopians behave differently under different circumstances" ????? By the way, how can you appeal to them tomorrow??? Because the logic is simple "As an Ethiopian, you also remain one of those who behave differently - - - circumstances"!!!!
Even you could not tell to the journalist how Meles has been shroud and busy cheating the West and Ethiopians!!! Instead, you blamed all Ethiopians including yourself!!! You are someone who can not differentiate politicians from the innocent civilians.
After all, what should we expect from the "Red terrors" ?????
It is amazing how such person, who served during the derg regime is not in jail now?????
My dear Oromos, now you have seen and heard from the head of the CUD (naftagna) what plan naftagnas have for you and for the oppressed people!!! We need to tell to all CUD and members that their place is only in and around GONDER!!! No cheating and looting any more!! No one language(Amharic) religion(naftagna Orthodox) and flag any more!!! Nooooooooooo way!!! OKAY.

Did you listen to his answer about aid to Ethiopia? about the deceiving nature of Ethiopians? But did you marvel if he were to be the PM, investment would flow to Ethiopia? why not? He is not tainted by the deceiving Ethiopian nature? how about his association with the Derg regime? Well, he said he did it for his children who now live in the USA.how about his presence when 36 Ethiopian were gunned down in Addis? He said he was there. The court, if this case goes to court, should call him as a witness. What a misrable performance.

I thought the interviews were live and was hoping that Ato Hailu would have learned from Meles Zenawi's mistakes. Oh boy was I wrong. I found out that, the interviews were taped on June 28 and 29 with no 'opportunity' for Hailu Shawel to watch Meles Zenawi's interview which is fair game. Either CUD should have sent somebody else for the interview or denied the interview request outright

As bad as Meles Zenawi was, Ato Hailu was equally bad if not worst.

On Style, Ato Hailu Shawel was the winner. He was more relaxed and at ease. But his answers were not politically sophisticated.

1. I was kind of embarrassed for him when he admitted that he stayed with Derg because he has kids. I appreciate the man is telling as it is, but he just gave a weapon to his critics. Who is more important Ethiopia or your kids? Look I am as selfish (read Hodam) as most, I am writing this from the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave good old USA. But you can not accuse Meles Zenawi being coward, no matter how much you may disagree with him. You simply can not give an excuse to be complacent of a regime that killed thousands of its citizens. That is not leadership quality.

2. Ato Hailu mentioned that Westerners do not understand Ethiopian culture so Blair and other G8 leaders were duped by Meles Zenawi. Is Ato Hailu implying that Ethiopians are mischievous people? That was uncalled for. On the same token, why would they trust him, if he is elected to be the next prime minister?

3. On the Aid question. He should have answered it in a much better way, he presented himself as if his only interest is to get to power. I agree that aid should not be given with out some kind of accountability, but you do not want to appear like Loco Cubans in Miami who oppose even shipment of medicine to their own people in Cuba.

4. About the Boycott of Parliament question. Again, Ato Hailu was caught unprepared for the question.

5. Ato Hailu completely denied the press release his own party released. That was one big lie.

On Meles Zenawi

1. Meles Zenawi failed on the style part of the interview a big F. Towards the end, the man was completely bored of the interview, visibly irritated, breathing fast. I thought he was going to smack the interviewer (Be Testa)
2. He was trying to tactfully lie who appointed the members of NEBE, but the interviewer did his homework and pressed him to admit that he was the person responsible for appointing all members of the NEBE. His responses were somewhat arrogant and unprofessional
3. It is sad that Meles Zenawi did not apologize for the killing of innocent civilians
4. Meles Zenawi should have admitted about the police brutality and send a strong message that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. But he did not seem to care for the loss of life, and I like to see him go because of that.

In conclusion, Ato Hailu Shawel was not a good spokesperson for the party, perhaps next time Dr. Birhanu Nega should try to get an interview and try to make up. Look some people are just not meant to be good speakers, specially Engineers.

You said it better than I could. A morally corrupt enemy does not hold the fire line when confronted with the full force of people determined to win their basic rights. If you truly believe in a common good for all and think past trivial and tribal bickering, one day you will free your homeland and your proud people will be galloping their horses on the plains of Mendida again.

A country with perceived or real “winners and losers” is a country on the verge of disintegration and Ethiopia will require a crazy glue with infinite tensile strength to hold it together.

Ayi Miskinu Ato Haily!

He thinks that every Ethiopian behaves differently in differnt circumstances simply because he does so. He weighs people by his level of low integrity. You see he already revealed on this interview that he behaves differently. To raise his children he served as one of the achitects of Red Terror for two years. When he achieved his personal goal he went to establish his consultancy firm. What a shameless man! Does he think that he was the only man who had children at that time. Many heroes who had full determination for the just cause have confronted the brutal Red Terror system which he was busy designing and gave their life. They put the cause of the broad mass first than the life of their children and family. These heroes believed that the life of their family could not be improved while the broad mass lives in missery. But the political opportunists such as Mr Hailu choosed to serve Red Terror for some time so that they could gain from the missery of the broad mass and rais their children. Serving the interest of the wider society is always secondary for these opportunists.

The most I am wondering to know is why he now stepped in politics. How many firms he planned to establish after selling the land of Oromia and the South to foreign investers if he become a PM (But he never get it). By the way, what is his exceptional link with foreign investers? Did he want to tell us about his party members who are living in the West? Alas for the innocent Finfinne residents who casted their ballot for him. They would have not done this if they knew who he is. Kumitawun tikishaw lay adrigo erkanun siyarsi yenebere hulu poletikegna negni bilo hizbi yasgedilal!!

My beloved oromo and the oppressed south! It is good we knew the true nature of those who are shouting to bring back the yester year feudal system. But they never achieve it. Without any doubt they will got to their grave with their evil dream.

Hi Peace, how do you expect from Oromos to act like Mandella, where we are still under the colonization of abeshas (Ethiopia)????? Don`t try to compare two different things. From now on, Oromia and Ethiopia are two different countries with their own flags!!! We Oromos don`t want to be under and part of your "emiye" Ethiopia.
Thank you for the music you suggested me, but I have to tell you the following: 1/ I don`t have time to listen to anything in Amharic 2/I don`t understand your Amharic much, which is the naftagna language and also I don`t want to understand more 3/ Thanks to our Oromo muscians and singers,I don`t have any need of naftagna music!!!
Peace, remember that Mandella forgave those whites because many of them realized their past mistakes!! How about naftagnas and their children????? I think they haven`t understood anything for years and will not understand anything for another century. Therefore, the best solution is: To say good bye emiye Ethiopia with all your problems and crying!!! Then, we will be saying "LONG LIVE OUR BELOVED OROMIA"!!!

First and foremost, kudos to the interviewer (BBC). All leaders need to be accountable for their actions and must answer all hard questions.

It is not a suprprise that there are a lot of agitators on this comments boards - nonetheless I would like to say my piece.

Meles's government currently lacks legitimacy in the eyes of all Ethiopians and donor countries (Ethiopia'slife line.)

Meles did look bad on the ineterview and reaffirmed to all that his goverment is totalitarian.

CUD's Hailu was a former Derg Member, even if he worked for 2.5 years... He tried to mention governmental duress but who was not under duress at that time. CUD needs a leader with clean hands. Imagine a former Nazi party member as president of a country?

CUD's Hailu 's comments were vague and ill formulated. (Maybe his not so atriculate in english)

CUD's land policy is not to sell land from the Oromo - in fact as I have read and done research on comparative land ownership policies - it is an economic tool that empowers those who till the land. What do they own now? Nothing! If property rights were respected in Ethiopia, farmers would have been able to borrow money and augment their income. An oromo will be able to sell his/hjer land, borrow against it, lease it.. and so forth. Currently, none of this is allowed! How can we compete in global market with such policies? All of our brothers in Ethiopia should enjoy the same property rights you enjoy abroad and not be subject to EPRP's whim. they forcefully remove people with not compensation and award land to foreigners and their cronies such as Al Moudi. The locals have no say in what happens to them let alone be able to negotiate a favorable compensation.

CUD's Haile did not give good enough reason to justify his support of UK's foreign aid refusal. In fact, his interview was not informative.

All in all both Halie and Meles were disappointing.

I am gratful to hear the interview that challenged Meles Zenawee and exposed his mask which had been reflecting his leadership as a model and made him vicotorious in all the previous ellections. The most important part of the exposition is that Meles himself being the chairman of the ellectoral board and has been twisting the peoples voice. It has been clear that the ruling party has been deciding who has to be ellected, yet inviting people to take part in the ellections. This time their method has been exposed by tallented and brave Ethiopians who got deep in the society and expressed their understandings and feelings. Above all, they have torn the "Gloom",
"chellemtegninet", which has been blocking the Ethiopian people from expressing their views and fighting for their rights. Therefore, there will be no more nominal democracy and ellection in Ethiopia. I enjoyed watching the interview when Meles stumbled and failed to answer the questions related to his leadeship and actions he took. Thanks to the journalist who could dig that deep.

As many of you did I also have managed to watch the BBC’ Hard Talk interview with both PM Meles and the largest opposition leader Ato Hailu.

After monopolising the spot light for 14 plus years PM Meles seems edging to lose his grip on power. Let alone the donor countries generous government officials and good doers like that of Sir Geldof even his village people from Adwa would not be impressed with his performance on Hard Talk. Well his Excellency should now think an exist plan with grace, before the donor countries start to turn their back on him. He should now find new blood from his party to give a bit life of lease to his dying political Organisation. It seems the poor sod have been changing and wearing a number of official hats for him for the last 14 years, it must be tiring some for him to carry out such a number of responsibilities … as Interim President, leader of his party, Head of a cabinet, Prime Minster Twice, Father, husband, head of the Intelligence, Head of the War cabinet, Spokesman for his Party, representing the 24,000 voters from Adwa, Representing his Mother’s cousins from over the border and recently helping PM Tony Blair in washing away his colonial Guilt visa vi Making history out of poverty, lately I discover that his analysis on the rose (mainly in the non violence) revolutions in former soviet colonies that he eloquently has an omnibus knowledge in Global Revolutions…. For those of you die hard EPDRF supporters please cherish your man…make him a golden statue and worship him… he is such a super man with many tasks and he is a good deal for EPDRF… he is not like buy one get one free…he is like elect one and get as many characters as you wish…. God help die hard EPDRF supporters in opening your eyes…. Well in the midst of this election our planet has now witnessed a political party that terrorise well informed global media and its audiences that if they say any thing about the election result that the event after the election would make genocide in Rwanda a Childs play… wedi Berket go and dig your own grave you have just incriminated yourself (if that was EPDRF’s intention your party as well) as super serial killers or as butchers of Ethiopians …. There is a strong global community out there that fights not only act of genocide but also malicious intention like that of expressed by the information Minster.

With regards to Ato Hailu Shawl …his response was not impressive to the global audience, as the general votes show the coalition party he represent has obviously impressed the concerned parties, the voting public of Ethiopia… it is also should be noted by the so called die hard opposition supporters that the man they got as a leader is not the cream of creams of Ethiopians but a brave old man who stood up to make political statement for not only the current dictator, the darling of the x-colonial masters, but also to the brutal soviet’s darling dictator… CUD and the other opposition political parties they also must coach young bloods to represent them in this changing global politics…..

I really want to see on daily basis in Ethiopia all public officials grilled by true journalists with well researched point of views and accountabilities… that would be the day of hope and prosperity.
Thanking all the contributors for giving me the courage to write…Keep well!!

Regarding the interview, three words only (Lip service exposed, well done and credit to Hard Talk...

To those Oromo Fundamentalists who are dissminating hate, please read,,,,:

While you cry for Oromia independence, do not forget to think about the current situation in Eritrea, They cried for independence for so long, they waged war against Ethiopia, they have done everything they could to trash Ethiopia and her reputations, then they got the independence they have asked for, now guess what, they are crying because they miss Ethiopia - no more creaming the fat Land,,,,,,,, We have all heard how much is costing them to by Teff??? Who would have thought!! what an untold misery descended upon Eritrea,,,, all caused because of self righteousness and ignorance. Obviously you come across as someone with no maturity to understand the working of God, you seem to imply that the Ormos will be set free once they become independent state/ (meaning owning a piece of land), but what you fail to understand is that freedom comes within not from outside, therefore you and your peers will never be free since what you are seeking is not to be found through mere wishes,,, the question of freedom is much, much deeper than that, so stop short selling the Oromia people and start looking for real freedom which would only come from God. Repent and release your anger, an all encompassing Christ shall redeem you and set you free, and then may be then, peace and love will be your first and only language.

Dear netters, I have watched both interviews with great interest. There is a starking contrast between these two men from style to substance. You can also see for the first time who really has the country's interest at heart.

Meles Zenawi, as usual, puts his points forward with great accuracy and confidence as some might call it arrogance. No matter if he is wrong or right, I think, he genuinely believes in what he is doing, giving the impression that he is an arrogant guy.

Hailu Shawel on the other hand has no clear point to put out there except that he hates Meles Zenawi. In the process he made a grave mistake of calling Ethiopians mischieveous.

Although his lack of skill in the english language shouldn't be a measure of his intellect level or leadership ability, Mr. Shawel's lack of preparation when entering into an interview of this magnitude indicates his personality and work ethics; he can't be taken seriously.

Meles Zenawi was well prepared; he spoke in flawless English and presented his case in a very organized fashion. Again that would make me trust meles more to lead the country.
Meles looked and sounded genuine when he accepted a re-election offer from the journalist. I thought he really cared for the well being of the country than simply clinging to power as some have been accusing him of.

Hailu Shawel looked bad when he admitted that he was a red terrorist. It looked like he would do anything to get close to power.

I think Mr. Shawel would do a favor to himself, his fabulous kids, the country and everybody involved if he removed himself away from the politics business. I was really sad when he implied that aid should be held back as long as Meles is in power. A hungry or a sick child doesn't understand who is in power; thay just need the food or the medication. Mr. Shawel made a fool of himself. If put him on power, he will make a fool of ourselves.

We thought we had a chance to get out of poverty. For a while we all dreamed of going back home and living a good life. Most importantly I hoped one day seeing a well run, a not soo poor country. It seems all that was just a dream, thanks to people like Hailu Shawel who would bleed that country from the day of the red terror to preset day of democratic fever.

Hi peace, I would like to answer your questions as follows:
1/ Yes, indeed, I am a perfect human being, who have been created in the image and likeness of God and there is no reason why you should doubt about that
2/I don`t see any reason why I feel proud of the language which is not mine and Ethiopia, which is not my country!!! Instead, I do feel proud in my Oromo language and my country Oromia.
3/Don`t tell us what is not true, people in that empire now know about their identity more than any time
For us Oromos, to use our own language is much better than using Amharic (the language of colonizers)
If you want to prove this, try to present your application in Amharic in Oromia, then you will see the result!! Probably you are living in abroad and what to do???
By the way, we Oromos don`t need only food and democracy as you put, but also FREEDOM (to be free from the colonization of Ethiopia) Even we Oromos have had democracy for centuries and for us it is not something new. I think if we get our freedom, food and democracy are not problems for Oromos!!!
I do believe in God, but I believe in the God who freed the people of Israel from the slavery of Egypt and in Jesus who has died to free us from the slavery of sin!!! From this you can see that I don`t believe in a god in whom the naftagnas pretend to believe. The true God is the one who loves the freedom of his children.
Finally, peace, remember that your Amharic will not have ANY PLACE IN OROMIA!!!

The brutal Derg trying to come back to the chair.
The Ethiopian people you talk the truth.
Who's better from derg and EPRDF?
CUD is facsist and Neft.
In my veiw EPRDF was more moderate for democracy than Mr Shawul.Mr Shawul has no self confidence and he is laying.
In other hand if Derg holding back the aid they are hurting the Ethiopian people but not Mr Meles. Here is the truth by hook or crook that Derg will never see that chair for ever if he cry for western milion years.

FORTEEN YEARS DEMOCRACY IN ETHIOPIA : VIRTUAL OR ACTUAL?
This is a book to be available on market in the near future.
The book clearly reflects Mr. Zenawi's tactic to imitate a democrat.
His Personal philosophy from Marxist-Leninist to a free-marketer is dealt critically.
Not only this, but his strategy to stay on power is also addressed.
One of his strategy is to turn the country from Westen free market ideology to Communist China. This is one way to get aid.
Do not miss the book.
It will tell you the political tactics of the crooked dictator.

In short Mr. Zenawi's Political Journey from Marxist-Leninist to Free-Marketer and back again to Marxist-Leninist is mirrored in the book.
His political acrobat is made clear to the International community.

I think we should all remember most of us left Ethiopia, because of the Mengistu Regime. Ethiopia has come a long way since then. People are actually free to express themselves and move about freely in and out of the country. There are over 25 newspapers just in Addis, and most of them are always commenting on the works of the existing regime.
I don't know call me naive, but I don't want Mr.Hailu or his kind leading Ethiopia. A person advocating anarcy in Ethiopia is not what the country needs. Ethiopia needs someone who is interested in ending the AIDS and POVERTY epidemics. Not an expert on bringing about a revolution. Hailu says civil disobedience, I call it a revolution, just like the one he helped bring for Mengistu's government.
Remember people most of us don't live there. We have become the agitators. Please lets concentrate on bringing the country together to fight POVERTY and AIDS. Lets not bring chaos, to a country on a verge of a civil war. Remember we are part of Africa. We are part of the 3rd world nations, according to the World Bank, IMF and IFC. Countinued chaos among African nations only helps them make more money. The so called aid money is a loan. Lets get a bit educated about the rest of the world. Today the only country that is not in debt to these banks is Cuba. And I hope we are all educated enough to know why. A thing called sanctions, put on Cuba forbids it from borrowing money from IMF, World Bank and it's kind. Therefor Cuba is forced to become a self sufficient country in turn.
Instead of discussing politics lets discuss on how we can collectively help the poor. Lets try to seperate the people from the government. Let us find an interest, in how we can help advance the country technologically and economicaly. So, that there is enough food and shelter for all. So that the basic necessities of all individuals are met.
I for one watched both interviews. I found the Prime Minister to be an eloquent speaker. This is the first time I heard him give an interview and I must say impressive. He might not have the answers to everything but the answers given were commended. No wonder he is found to be one of the greatest African leaders next to Mandela. He seems to have a genuine interest for his people and the democratic enviornment he is trying to put forth for Ethiopia. But, to be honest I don't think the people of Ethiopia are ready for the democratic maturity he is putting forth. It seems apparent everyone is ethnically and emotionaly driven. While Meles said he would forfit aid from Blair to bring about a democratic climate to his people. How did Hailu address the people? Or was he too concerned or short of words to explain how other people don't have the understanding of the Ethiopian culture. He is just a hater. I hope all of you can see through him. He is back to get what he wanted during Mengistu's regime. He does not seem to show a genuine interest in the people of Ethiopia. He has no plan except to privatize land. His first priority should be to feed the hungry not sell land to the rich. I am sorry but if he is the only candidate that Ethiopians can put forth as Meles's opponent, then we have it coming. This only shows how the country and the people are better of with the current regime. And change by people of his caliber can only bring chaos. Come on people you should be proud to be an Ethiopian today. We own the best airline in Africa. By the way the only airline that connects East and West Africa. For the first time in Africa a democratic process is actually being attempted. People are not terrified anymore. The economic climate looks promising. For the first time there is a flux of people going back to Ethiopia and opening up business. Unfortunately the are all opening up cafes and bars as they did back in America. While the educated stays here and perpetuates the American lifestyle, living paycheck to paycheck.
Well I think I've said enough. By reading these comments above, I have come to realize: So much more education and conciousness is needed by my people.

Dear Jibril of Finfinne!
"... Kumitawun tikishaw lay adrigo erkanun siyarsi yenebere hulu poletikegna negni bilo hizbi yasgedilal!! "
You see Jibril my men or women, Amharic can be used to exactly express your feelings in a certain unique wayjust like you did. They simply call it, language.
Let us just use it as a means of communication for a country formed by different ethnicities and happen to use amharic at this juncture.
History will tell us that, the formation of a nations happened when certain groups helped by economic power and expostion to "modern time ideals" marched in history when the factors of building a nation was materialized through out the world at that time. it was instantanous and accidental.
There were also big differences between the ruling elites and the majority members of the ethnicity they belong.
It is kind of unusual when some of the particpants of this forum blame amhara's for everything gone bad under the sun by saying "...Oromos have had democracy for centuries...")
Teka Tulu was the master mind of the red terror. Kelbessa negawo, who is charged for crime against humanity, was part of the killing machine...etc during the derg era. Addis ababa and Amhara's were in the middle of the killing field as the rest of the country.
King haile selassie's heavy hands were partly consists of guys from ethnicity different than Amhara's.
There are some Things happened in our history which we should not be proud of. Uneven power base gave upper hand to ruling elites at the time. People from the whole aspect of life in ethiopia suffers and are paying dearily irrespective of their ethnicities.
let us concentrate and fight for a strong democratic foundation and not be distructed by the flame gushing out of the deffective burners with no more gas in its tank.

You(in the likes of Bonso) want to drive a car in the dark with a questionable brake, a worn out alternator and tyre, with blown light bulbs, and malfunctioned steering.

The other most interesting thing is there is A DEEP HATRED AMONG THESE GROUP ON EPRDF AND MELES. This will curtain everything positive EPRDF has done for the last 14yrs and even the current election.

Can anyone tell me what the international community has done to Isias Afeworki for his barbaristic dictatorial rule of 14 solid years!

Did the Eritreans have the slightest democratic rights we have here in Ethiopia?

For me the HardTalk has revealed who is who.

The problem is some of you who are commenting in this forum deliberately or it is your limit try to shadow the facts.

BY ANY STANDARDS MELES'S INTERVIEW IS THE BEST OF HIS AND HAILU SHAWEL'S ONE IS THE WORST.

As some people say CUD might have nominated someone say Lidetu or Dr Birhanu or Dr Hailu Araya than this bull.

He was just noding his head now and then. Poor elementary teacher!

He better ope a taj bet and sell taj to fellow cantry men.

Shame for ethiomedia.com they placed Meles's speech in text early in the morning and when it comes to Hailu's they don't even put link in a visible way. These are the journalists we have. Especially, based in the USA? or outside Ethiopia. These are just junks.

Where ever you are: inside Ethiopia, in the US, in Europe, in Africa, in Asia, Australia and Newzealand...
Meles when he concludes his interview....

"Meles - We are not out of the woods yet. We are trying to get out of it. We've made some progress. But we are not out of the woods yet. I do not believe any African country, including South Africa, is completely free from risk of relapse ..of tragedy."

Still we are in the woods!!!!!!!!!!!!

One big problem of Ethiopian Premier(Mr. Zenawi) is that he considers him self the wisest person
on earth.
He considers the World Community as FATUOUS. But, trully speaking , he is FATUOUS to himself.
Because he does not know the where abouts of the MODERN world.
That is why he is building a Facade or Virtual Democracy in the 21st century.
The world community must be dedicated to force such kind of leader resign so that democracy can strike its root in the poorest country of the world (Ethioopia).

Ethiopian Premier,Mr.Zenawi, is in a Pettifogging objections of Opposition Victory.
He has to transfer power peacefully to the opposition.

PETTIFOGGING debate is not functional any longer in the era of the 21st century.
There is no any thing hidden from the International community.
Those countries in the G8 summit must urge this dictator to resign so that;
Justice, rule of law, democracy, and human rights can be respected.

To The International Community,
As I watched the Hard Talk interview of Ethiopian Premier, Mr.Zenawi, he was attempting to cheat the World Community. He spoke as if he were a REAL DEMOCRAT. Basically, however, he is a builder of IMMITATIVE DEMOCRACY.
His dictator behaviour was reflected in the middle of the interview.
The 21 st century world does not have a place for such kind of WICKED LEADERS.
The international community must put its ultimate pressure so that Mr. Zenawi can transfer power to the opposition parties peacefully.
Unless there is peaceful transfer of power, the country will suffer POLITICAL TURBULENCE.

As a human being I am sure you understand some of the very basic rules of decency and if you have nothing good to say, please do not say it. You are also an individual and you should speak for yourself and not for the whole of Tigray.
It is also good that you are exercising your freedom of speech but you should also remember that your rights end where someone else’s rights start.

Hello All;

It is surprising to see fellow comaptriots crying for the freedom of the Ethiopian people.

For those CUD supporters Ethiopia-->Amharic-->Doro wat--> Orthodox --> Eskista and all sorts of allegations, complain, defamation until the above is true.

None of you know nothing about the Somalis, the Afars, The Gambellas, Benishanguls, the Oromos, the Sidamas, the Kefichos, etc......

What you only know is the Amhara and one Ethiopia (the land).
You are for struggling to unify the land called Ethiopia NOT THE PEOPLE.

If you consider the people just form your party or any political organization under the name of Amhara ... and then try to form coalition with other similar sister organizations NOT UNDER THE CAMUFLAGE OF ONE ETHIOPIA.

It is then the Unity of Ethiopians will come.

Do you know out of the 425 CUD candidates only 85 (less than a quarter) are Muslims! In a country where 40--50% is Muslim.!!!!!

Asked what is your plant for the country, relpied as: investor through his connection, here come the problem it is not the policy or the law that is important in his view rather his dispora connection. It clearly shows his lack of understanding the way forward , birkem a visionary leader. I think his plan is to call the retiring dispora and buy the ormom and souther people land and allow these people to sleep on it.
The second promise to ethiopia- opening vocational school for the youth, then what new since the current government is doing the same for millions.
Finally because the man seious failed the journalist started to remind his land, then he said of coure land will be privitaized. I don't where he is going to put all the rural people before any sign of industry development. In the short run let first get employment for the youth before tempting with the rural land holding system.
All the other part of the intreview was yes, no yes, no answers. Shame on him. Why not he faile ask for translator if he is incapable of doing English. In gereral his answer was full of contradition. No principle, stand to fight for except power at any expense

The guy called Hailu Shawul have no idea how the political systems work. He is an engineer for nothing. In the past, for sure, we have a credible evidence that he planned how to terrorize Ethiopian people at derg time. He was a participant in the process of killing innocent Ethiopian people. He thinks no body knows that. This is the kind of guy the Naftagna Amharas are wanting to lead Ethiopia. His whole plan is to sell out Oromo land to foreign investors. He clearly said, he got a lot of foreign connections who he want to sell out all our fertile land. Ethiopian people, be it Oromos or southerners should learn from the country called Zenbabewe (Rodesia), South Africa, Kenya and more. The indiginuous black population are landless while the white foreign citizens having all the fortile land. Who want to repeat the same mistake? No body! There are ways to make a viable development without selling people's land. Oromia state and southerners should develop their own investors without looking into foreign investors. We have alot of people with money, and proper training in our country. We need to find ways to bring home our experts, professionals, engineers, doctors, scientists, and more in order to make a viable change in our country. We don't need to depend too much on foreign investors. Do you know that foreign investors have their own hidden agenda which not even related to economic development but something else. We don't need to invite trouble to our country. We have more than our share already. For sure, without no doubt, we need more limited genuine foreign investors, latest high tech equipments, and experts in order to eradicate poverty.

Dear Almaz, Mohammed (Addis Ababa)!

I am lost. Can you tell me how you can talk about ethiopia and forget about the 70 plus million people?
your assessment towards the prime minister and cud chair hailu ("...Poor elementary teacher!", almaz or mohammed )
is your prerogative. I respect that even though i do not like the pieces of generalization and some low blows you did throw.
when you are saying people outside ethiopia does not know the nation and nationalities, you can not be more wrong. There are ethiopians who came from different ethnicity who are residing in every part of the world. There are people well informed as their counter part back home. Every body has a right to be heard just as you did.
You brought cud, for your argument sake, and blanket the opposition and amhara's.
If prime minister wants us to be grateful, personally , representing no one, will say thanks meles for the election(not the counting) which is better than the latter. I am thinking!!!. Is that not the part of the job he sworn in to do?.

1. he could have independent NEB.
2. he should expect defeat and accept it gracefully.
3. he could use his excutive power to protect the livelyhood of the democratic processes and get rid of the Mengistu type cadres who are doing anything and every thing to prolong their power.
4. he could have make the media accessable to anyone anytime.
5. he has to learn how to take reponsiblity to the things which went wrong during his oversight of every thing as we know it other than blame fearless agazzies.
6. He has to learn how to make the excutive and legistlative branch independent from each other.
7. he has to minimize the share the excutives are stashing away from this poor country. As far as i know, If they are running the company their take home has to show the improvement of the company. If our country is getting poorer each passing day while their bank account is getting fatter, there is a major problem almaz or mohammed.
8. The rubber stamp "people congress" has to have voice and life by its own. do you know anything about their activity if they are different than the other congress seen in our historical jorney. Look what they are doing to the power of addis local government.

When we are talking about the sickness of the democratic process and blame the driver, i do not want to be labelled as sympthaizer: hailu or amhara neftegna. hailu, merara gudina, meles, bereket or x or Y is not my point. they have to be judged by their merit. I do not like anything associated with military derg. If hailu has direct involvemnt with the derg criminals, meles is not doing his job investigating those criminals.

I want us to fight for the real foundation of true democracy in our country. That might be our last hope to get out of these merky water and see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I have a problem when we are avoiding the major factor for this predicament and swing left and right just to make our point.

god be with you my fellow ethiopians.
I will try not to fail you again.

We are sill talking about individuals. What about fighting for our rights and institutions. you are still afraid of the true picture of democratic processes. Some times you amazed me by the types of your spectrum of thoughts.
Do not you think if by chance any crocked individual is selected and if we have strong legistlative and judicial body in hand, and our democtatic rights in place, we will be by far better off?.
We are not thinking of electing a king. We are supposed to elect an individual who has ideas how to drag our country from these mess. They are going to serve one or two terms. If they perform well we will give them the repect. If they fail us we will bring them down.
What i am saying is that they should be considered us a simple public servants no more no less.

May be some of us do not have faith but some dose, some of us might be conservative, and some of us may be careless. Please please, at least we can communicate each other eventhough we don't understand eachother...because we don't want...Let us stand up together. Do not try to undermind or place some one up to the top. We might not forget what happened in the past but let us forgive each other. Just try to comment on those intrveiws how they tried to address their message to the Ethiopian people and to those who stood up to help us. Be abide by God that he told us to Love each other. Let us not fight anymore. Enough is enough My dear brothers and sisters. You know what...poor Ethiopians do not want our unneccessary word conversations. But rather they want our coordination, Help, Love and courage to develop the nation. It is not only the responsibilities of Tigrians' or Amharas' or Ormos' but its to everybody whom think that or feel that "God Gave us this Land, gave us brothers and sisters, Mothers and Fathers, the peace and love to our nation from North to South...from East to west... to use it and to live in it untill the last day." Please do not use bad words and let others to say bad and agravate our wound. We shouldn't waist time on speaking out our differences all the time because no solution will come out.
By the way I can say that some people might reply to my message with negative idea but I tell you one thing if one oppose the idea of peace, love and hope, it is clear that the person is not evil but the evil has settled on him to tell him to say bad. For this reason I don't hate this person but I will ask God to forgive him.
I am optimistic on the better future of Ethiopia if we love each other. Ethiopians deserve Love, not Hatred.
Thank you//

Both want the continiuation of Abyssinian rulres in Ethiopia. The struggle between Melese Zanawi and Hailu Shawal is power struggle of the oppressors. The current crisis in Ethiopia is deeper than election crisis. Indeed, it is redfining Ethiopia. Both Amhara and Tigres assume that they have the divine right to rule Ethiopia. Ethiuopia is country created by force and exist merely by force. The oppressed of Ethiopia peoples have been cheated many years Abyssinian(Amhara and Tigre). Hailu Shawal should understand that his Amhara party would neve ever succeed the wayane. It is the turn of the oppressed unabyssinian peoples to determine their fundamental right-self determination which theoritically the Wayane enshrined

What do you mean? Is every body who oppose your idea possessed by evil spirit? Do you even know what you are saying here? You see, be it negative or positive comment, it is the substance of your idea which others want to weigh , but not you personally. Thus, don't feel betrayed if someone gives you negative comment. You need to know that a person who show such a feeling always try to block healthy communication. It is not fair to say "shut up every one" after posting your message. Because you have already opened your mind to the public. The public has an inherent right to reflect on what you have said, be it negative or positive.

And also don't hate difference. Because difference is one aspect of diversity. It is when we learn to cherish diversity that we attain unity of people. We cannot bring unity by denouncing the diversity we are blessed with to own. After all denouncing diversity for many decades could not bring unity. So, why do you try to continue on the wrong way.

Eritrans are watching the drama of Ethiopian elections with some interest. I for one am amazed by the interest the election recieved by the Ethiopian diaspora. Keep it up.
My take on the interviews of Meles and Shawel is that the gentlemen did thier level best to convince the public about thier causes. But they made a blunder each,-big at that.

Meles:
When asked why he declared state of emergency in Ethiopia, baning demonstrations and so forth, he replied as a states man that he has the responsibility to keep the law and order of the country. But at the end, he stambled and said that his partners (the west noteably USA and EU) did not complain.
What a blunder! This actually indicates that Ethiopia is under the leadership of its donors!!! He can gun down his countrymen as far as the donors do not protest.
As for Shawel at some point of the interview he forgott that the camera was on and millions if not billions of people were watching him.He just confirmed for most Eritreans that the prejudice we had ... " Ethiopians (Read Amharas and Tgrayans) never say what they mean and they never mean they say" ... You know the Semna Werk.
In away he told the whole world do not trust any ethiopianan do not trust me as we Ethiopians are double faced.
As Eritreans, we have known al along the double if not triple and qudrable faces Meles has. But to go on the world broadcast and tell the whole world that Ethiopian politicians are double faced is beyond my imagination

But Meles still wants to be PM for life. 2) Ato Hailu may not be a good double faced politician, being unable to hide some of the emotions, but surely he is a man of work and that is what is needed. 3) The Derg was for 17 years but Ato Hailu resigned just in two years directly telling Mengistu. Who did that? 4) What Ato Hailu said about the demonstration is that CUD did not call for a particular one. He did admit calling a Demo for future time. But the journalist asked as if CUD called a defined demo. That was wrong. I think Ato Hailu did well in the interview despite lack of polished English. He did put what his party will do while Meles said he will think what he can do. Meles did not have any plan nor gave any hope for the future. Meles said "we took a calculated risk..." clearly showing his dictatorial behavior. The journalist was smart to let Meles expose himself many times. Meles exposed who he is in real terms.

Ethiopians would find it very difficult to render a clear winner if they were to vote for the next PM of their country based on the BBC interview. In my opinion both leaders failed the test of a visionary leader with clear plans for leading Ethiopia out of the current political quagmire and into the 21st centaury.
There is no doubt that the PM is a chameleon who can change his colors at the drop of the mighty UK pound. He has clearly abdicated and betrayed the founding principles of TPLF. The sense of betrayal for some of us is devastating but times have changed and I have not doubt our fallen heroes have secured their place in the democratization process of Ethiopia. In fairness to the PM, he served TPLF and his country well during the days of armed struggle but power and money corrupts the weakest of souls amongst us. It is time for change of the guards.
On the opposition side, there is no doubt that Ato Hailu is an intelligent engineer and likely very good in solving engineering problems within the realm of well defined laws of applied physics. However, in general terms, engineers are rigid and linear thinkers with very poor performers in the shadowy world of politics. I have also been told by people close to me that “Engineers are not cool dads and they think only in black and white”! I will not hold such a perception against any engineer!
The single unifying force between the umbrella organization CUD and its members is their common dislike of the TPLF government and there are no other shared valued and beliefs. The recent split within the ranks of the leadership of one of the member organization is an indication of a more serious power struggle. With mounting public expectation and an eye on the prize, the fault line and bickering within the family of strange bed mates will be more visible in the weeks and months to come. Furthermore, I do not believe the opposition have a noteworthy program for governing the country. Declaring that Ethiopian land is for sale on the open market is a throwback from the feudal system. Ethiopian farmers who toiled for greedy landlords will vote with their feet at the ballot box for such a proposal. I also believe that some leaders and influential members of the opposition group have a serious credibility issue. There is credible information that links them to the criminal regime of Mengstu. I personally have no trust on the ability, integrity and credibility of shadowy characters who “stepped over dead bodies” during the Derg regime in order to advance their interest.
It is very clear that a significant number of Ethiopians want and deserve a change of government but through a peaceful, democratic and transparent manner. The choices of political parties are plenty but the quality and integrity of the candidates are limited if not dubious.
Given the current dilemma, the only choice that I can think of is for Ethiopians to accepted the party who got the majority of votes in a faire way and press on with their demand for tangible and meaningful political reform. Earlier Jibril of Finfinne commented “we can not bring unity by denouncing diversity”. This is so true and I think that it is at the very foundation of many matured democracies around the World. How could Ethiopia persecute its very foundation of identity and diversity for the last 100 years? How could people be so hateful of each other and assume the same identity? Hitler advocated for the race of the tall, blond and blue eyed, but he was a demented short man with dark hair. He advocated for a race that he himself did not belong to. Ethiopia can not perpetuate the rule and domination of its diverse sons and daughters by a single ethnic group and condemn the rest to servitude.
Only a mythical Ethiopia can condone and continue the travesty of the last centaury.
The Americans fought a devastating civil war between 1861 and 1865 with staggering casualties of over 600,000 Americans. The Confederate south and Unionist north were deadly divided over the issues of slavery and division of power between the state and the Union. American democracy was born out of the ashes and misery of the civil war.
Between the time of the ill conceived annexations of Eritrea to the time Mengstu escaped to Harare with his looted windfall, the Ethiopian casualties of war and famine are in the millions.
The birth of African democracy in general and Ethiopian democracy in particular is long over due. Celebrating once diversity and forging common bonds based on mutual benefit, values, trust and respect provide the conditions for the birth and growth of democracy.
The politics of hate, ethnic and tribal bickering can only induce a still birth of democracy and it will perpetuate the cycle of violence.

To Jaylano

The problem with CUD leader and its supporter is they make too much noise. They don’t want to acknowledge that there are millions and millions of people who oppose their stand.

From the Eng. Interview I got the impression that the man is the father of lie. He boldly claimed that 26 millions voted in favour of opposition and 3 million to the PM. Doesn’t he know that the Ethiopian people can choose between two evils. The oppressed people know that CUD is more evil than EPRDF. So where from the man getting this astonishing numbers (26 millions)?

The other point that suppressed me is his blaming the Ethiopian people as multiple personalities. This may be the problem with his behaviours and his likes. Most Ethiopians are truth worthy and innocent. He himself and his likes are manipulative and power hungry. Do you think we he says that I will bring investors he means foreign investors? It is not. He was stressing his Diaspora connection, which means new breed neftegna. I have a good experience of these guys. They don’t have respect for other people.

TOTO I agree with you 100%.

I realised 100% this time who is Ato Hailu Shawel him self. He is among the remnant of DERGE and his party CUD prefers to use a derge-styl propaganda talking simply about unity of Ethiopian in words without recognising the diversity of the people of that country in terms of their culture, language, interest and even vision, etc...

"Yalteneka Giligil Yawkal ala Yagaree Saw" Gobez please try not to take us 14 back with the mentality of DERGE remnants. I urge CUD supporters, who are nor resistant to change and development to respect the rights of our people and work to build the democracy and transparency that at least EPRDF has accepted in principle.

Hi Almaz, thank you very much for your comment. In fact, in one of my postings, I tried to figure out how this guy (Hailu Shawel) showed disrespect towards our sisters. Actually it is not new for us, because this is the way naftagnas treat women and want to keep treating women!!!
Therefore, this Hailu Shawel is not even worthy to be "ye`idir degna" instead, he can be a member of "yesefer idir" The chairman of the idir in which Hailu Shawel is member has to explain things again and again, because he will not get the point easily!!!

The program is build on presumptions, that the guests are very professions and familiars with the media interviews, so they would try maneuvering any program to focus on the points they want to get across to the audiences. Or to the issues they come with answers prepared ahead. Therefore, the strategy of the program is to tackle the guest from the very beginning, with as much as many hard questions, in range of topics, without letting them enough time to think how to manipulate the interviewer. In the past this strategy proves it's self. Quite often we were witness how it mange to drop out of balance most experienced and charismatic politicians for whom English is native language, and forced them discovering their real motives, nature and characters. Given these facts I think mr. Melse did well even in western standards. On the contrary mr. Shawul performances was very poor, he wasn't talkative as opposition leader should be. after all media and TV in particular is the only tool the opposition has to confront successfully the government by using its only advantage of not holding any governmental position or responsibility and as such was free of making mistake. If try to analyses the gap between the good performance of the pm to the poor one of the opposition leader. I would say it is due to the audiences they asked to address to. While the pm directed his answers to the western public opinion audiences. and as such used perfectly the Opportunity of being host by prestigious Hardtalk program, to introduce him self as progressive and moderate person, who work hard to bring the values of democracy- equality of citizen regardless of color race and religion , free of expression and rules of law, to a country who never know this before . mr. Shawul answers were directed to his Ethiopian Diaspora supporters (convincing the already convinced) indeed he heard like what we in Amharic or Tigrigna calls shmagle (elderly of the village) and not modern opposition leader who see himself as alternative to the current pm. As result he missed the opportunity to portrait him self positively in the western public opinion. On contrary to mr. zanawi mr. shawul also didn’t mange to portrait negatively the pm nor he presented well planed program in case he would chosen. More than that, by rejecting the idea of debt cancellation to Ethiopia. He portrayed himself negatively as one who ready to harm the Ethiopian public interest for his political motives.

In conclusion
I don’t know both of them to decide which of them might be good prime minister, but on the Hardtalk of bbc mr. Mels looks more sophisticate person who could deal with complicate issues rather than mr. Shawul who looks (if we didn't suspected on his hidden agenda which base in this interview is quite difficult ruling it out) naïve, which is not bad. But to leads huge country like Ethiopia in the 21st century It needed more than that.

Are you guys real? Some of you are worried about, the english profeciecy of the leaders...hasn't some one pointed out that farmers in Kenya speaks better English but that by it self does not qualify them to be leaders?

Some of you seemed to bring some trivial issue about being from this tribe or that tribe..it does not not hold water in today's Ethiopia..only a myth by today's rulers to divide and rule forever. That is not going to happen again.

Please brothers and sisters..let us learn from those who has some substance to add in our undstanding of the current situations. Often times ,it is wise to listen than to balabber.

I realize that some people may try to make this forum a place for trivial squirmishes...grow up!
