Editor's Note:

Exactly 25 years ago today, Michael Buerk of the BBC brought a devastating famine in Ethiopia to the world's attention. Unfortunately, 25 years on, Ethiopia is yet again facing another famine. As you read this, 6.2 million people are starving and 270,000 children are at risk of death. As millions of people are starving in Ethiopia, the TPLF mouthpiece of Walta and ENA websites are completely starved of this news. The lead story on Walta is about the opening of a bank branch at Addis Ababa University, go figure.

After several months of denial of a famine in Ethiopia, the regime was forced to make an appeal for an emergency food aid at the 11th hour. Unfortunately this may have come too late for some of our people. To add insult to injury, in 1984 Ethiopia had its own port to receive food aid, thanks to TPLF, it is now a landlocked country.

Where is the outrage in Ethiopia's rubber-stamp parliament and in the media. Drought does not cause famine, only incompetent regimes do. It is the regime stupid, and regime change in Ethiopia is way past due.

BEKA! BEKA!

Many Severely Malnourished Children in Ethiopia at Risk Of Death

By Lisa Schlein

VOA News

Geneva
23 October 2009

The United Nations Children's Fund warns many children suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Ethiopia are at risk of death. The United Nations says 6.2 million people in the country are in need of food aid, the highest number for 25 years when one million people died of famine.

Several years of erratic rainfall, high food and fuel prices and the global financial meltdown have robbed Ethiopia of its ability to feed its own people. The United Nations says more than six million people are going hungry.

It warns lack of food weakens peoples' immune system, makes them vulnerable to disease and, possibly, death. Among the most vulnerable are children.

According to the U.N. Children's Fund, an estimated 270,000 children suffer from severe acute malnutrition and are in urgent need of special therapeutic feeding.

In a telephone briefing from Addis Ababa, UNICEF representative in Ethiopia, Ted Chaiban, considers the challenges ahead daunting. But, he says his agency is not without resources.

He says several programs have been functioning for years that are making a difference. One is a productive safety net program, which is a cash and food transfer program for families that lack food.

He says another program provides health services to every village in Ethiopia. And a third program treats severe acute malnutrition at community level.

"The result of that is that you treat children early on and you avoid complications and you save many more lives," said Chaiban. "A child that is severely acutely malnourished that is not treated has a 30 to 50 percent chance of dying. We now have 3,200 points which can do this treatment at community level and that is 1,600 percent increase since 2007."

Chaiban says UNICEF needs nearly $39 million to carry out a few essential activities. He says the agency needs to pre-position ready-to-use therapeutic food to treat severely acutely malnourished children.

He says UNICEF needs money to buy saline solutions and antibiotics to protect children from diarrhea and to establish safe water points. He says insecticide-treated bed nets are needed to protect children from malaria.

And, in some areas, particularly the Somali area of Ethiopia, a critical measles vaccination campaign is being planned. He says this is crucial because the combination of measles and malnutrition is deadly to children.

This is a Genocide in the making. Woyanne is creating artificial famine in the south by manipulating the price and availability of farming supplies such as fertilizers, to fatten its coffers with the aid money that will come in the poor Southerners' name. I thought you measure one's abilities and genius through the results of his/her work. Is Meles Zenawi still a smart, visionary leader given the repeated colossal failures in last 18 years in making the country food secure?

On Guardian.co.uk there is a slide pictures under the title of -"Save the Children: Ethiopia food crisis"
The 5th slide is the one who made me so upset and here is what is written underneath:

"Only 42% of adults in Ethiopia are literate. Some of the poorest children .."

what happened to the effort and the legacy of Mengustu Haile Mariam - who had eliminated illiteracy to the point of 85% of Ethiopians could read and write and now 18 years later instead of progressing in this field we are now back to the level of when Haile was in power

Meles, baby.. what the hell are you doing?
I am your stout defender but now I am really enraged by this data

Is there anything good coming from this country? Please Meles.. I need some answer... Famine... And now only 42% of the citizen can read and what else is next? what calamity are we going to hear?
Meles .. I really need some explanation for me to keep on defending you from these vultures on nazret.com

Challenger,

You should head to The Hague to start your “Genocide” proceeding! Are you calling “Genocide” on the rain shortfall or on our creature? You guys are very interesting people…each day you wake up, you are hoping to find anything to use for blame game and this one is making you guys feel perfect. The famine is not just targeting certain people in Ethiopia instead there are many people in many part of the country that are facing starving because of the poor rain season. What do you know about “genocide anyways…we know whose hands are thick with bloods…

For Christ sake, Nazret com. All Ethiopians except the very few diehard supporters of the regime know very well, the gross failures and the meager achievements of MZ and Co. and generally that of the TPLF/EPRDF government.

Whenever something is done to the extreme, the result might not be as planed. Posting continuously on a daily basis, the picture of unfortunate Ethiopian children dying of famine, I am afraid, might ameliorate the anger, disappointment and abhorrence people have towards this regime, because people will start to believe that, the frequent posting of the same disturbing subject comes out of purpose and not out of genuine feeling. Therefore, please do not take it to the extreme and do not continue to flood your site with the topic of Ethiopian famine.

I assure you that Ethiopians and the whole world do not enjoy seeing the picture of emaciated and dying children. It is a terrifying and a heartbreaking scene. They have already seen enough. Such scenes remain in memory forever.

I wish this extreme failure on the part of the regime to feed its people could be a reason so that Ethiopians will unite to fight dictatorship. I also wish that the west will draw its support towards this regime seeing that, after billions of dollars in aid money and too much bragging about economic development on the part of the regime, today more Ethiopians are suffering from famine than the previous years.
Nevertheless, I am not saying that you should entirely abandon the subject. You should rather update the subject at regular intervals, because all Ethiopians are concerned with the outcome of this terrible misfortune that affects our people.

challenger do you say genocide? what is a genocide? I think on my assessemen there is no genocide in Ethiopia. The Genocide that I can remember have had gone with your uncle Mengistu Hailemariam in 1991.In fact there is starvation in some part of the country which is it could happen in any coutries including westren countries. This kind of hunger is not the first time it had happened before as well.

Its bad its devastating but what can you do? you can't fight with nature.Don't just blame everything on government.Givernment done teremendous job on its part for preventing not to happen more of what we seen today in Ethiopia.

Remember, Genocide had gone and wiped out long with your uncle facisim Nazi Mengistu Hailemariam in 1991.Believe me as long as EPRDF is governed Ethiopia, everything will be changed. IT may not happen over night but trust me eventually it will. Look your father Haileselassie was in power for forty years but has no change brought to the country at ll.Mengistu was in power for 17 years not only change but the entire country was in a total mess.

Do you remember how Addis Ababa was looks?what you could see was paint of ESPACO or ESPA all over the walls nothing else. Now days as soon as you get off the plane, what you could see is high rise of massive buildings. wide very fatastic free ways looks like some times,Houston bridge and free ways.

You should appreciated what is the northren lions did in our country man.Yeha

They used their psuedo-god to kill others, they use it for begging but whether u give them or not they thank neither u nor the almighty God. Even Meles communicate with God through Abouna Paulos. So habasha's god is quite different from the Real God we imagine.

YOU PEOPLE, this is Africa. drought, flood, starvation may occurred every three or four years, but this is not because Mels is here and Mosouvene is their, it is because the rooted problem of the Continent,IN Ethiopia, this is happen because youR father has punished the country with red terror and all the capacity this country would have were wiped out to death. but most of the children of Derg are flied to Europe and America while the poor families were flooded to the north front, but this is not what surprising me,now this children of the terrany Derg come again to kill as much as they can through their harsh and nasty propaganda and also are start to open their mouth to tackle our fight against the poverty. we really know that we will also have poverty and drought for the next few years and will asks our time and life. but for sure as we had eliminate your father from the history of this country, one day we will eliminate also the poverty once and for last , our enemy is not Meles, that is poverty who has rooted in Ethiopia by your father.

Blaming only the government will take you no where just like your old childish propoganda hadn't.

Firt ask yourself why is it Ethiopians suffered a wave of hunger for the last three or four hundred years? According to me the land especially in the North is overgrazed and thus it is futile to spend a lot of money to save those unproductive lands. According to me the people should be moved out and be settled in the South. For that you have to abolish this so called Kilil system and let people live any where they think farming could be producctive.

Secondly, we have to limit on how much children one could have. In the South and Oromo region people are having more than fifteen children and that is an acceptable by any standard. Like in China (one kid per family) we have to limit to two kids for one family.

Thirdly, we have to stop trivalising everything to politics and start to find lasting solutions where Ethiopia shall not be seen as a synonym with hunger. I am not blaming the western world who are doing their best to feed us but rather our own backward culture of envy and lazyness.

If it hasn't rained you shouldn't blame Meles but God for giving you a very dry land which is totaly dependent on rain. I think the government has done what is humanly possible. After all we have two third of African mountains and that can't be made for any agricultural use at all. Nevertheless, it is wise to move all industries from South to north and focus on mechanised farming in the South. Stop giving arable land to the evil Arabs and engage only in mechanised farming. Other African countries can give land to the evil Arabs for they are not as populated as Ethiopia is.

Under such tremendous conditions the government is doing what can possibly be done, and my next vote goes to Mr. Meles. He is doing his best what humanly possible is. I wish that God gives him more power to make it rain and show him where all those minerals are and at the same time guide him to open the eyes of millions blind Ethiopians to see the reality. REALITY is the buz word here where people like the lumpen professors like Al needs a big dosage of.

Shegawe, it looks like you stop drinking, your thinking is getting clearer. Welcome aboard to a fair minded group.

Thanks nazret.com for informing us and bringing the truth in the open. It is heart wrenching to watch the video of the suffering of my fellow Ethiopians.
The annoying arrogant and heartless Woyanes like Z-Mike and the likes keep on repeating to concerned Ethiopians--“if you have balls why don’t you take your guns and fight.” Listen SOBs: It is not that you are in power because of your braver or smarter than the rest of Ethiopians--You are just cold-blooded killers, looters and heartless people that have robbed the Ethiopian banks to arm yourselves. You have nothing to be proud of, but full of shame. It is hard for me to comprehended how the whole race of Woyanes could be this cold, cruel and inhumane.
You people remind of a true story of an 8 year old boy who was mad at his dad for getting a time out and that eight year old boy picked up his father’s gun and cornered his father and his fathers friend and killed both of them. The two grownups did what they were told by the eight year old, not because the child was smarter or stronger than them but that small child was armed. And you Woyanes are just like that 8 year old boy.
Again, Woyanes, there is nothing to be proud of for killing innocent Ethiopians by bullets and a method of starvations.

ONE CANNOT ARTICULATE ABOUT THIS ANY BEETER THAN F. SHEWAKENA. Below is his commentary few years back. ------------------------------- I AM CRYING NOMORE - by F. Shewakena It is hard to express the feeling that goes on in me right now. It certainly does not look like the feeling of empathy for I know how it feels. I have been there before and experienced it. I know how compassion feels but it is different from what I am in now. I was there more than once - there in, Bati and Kobo and Dessie and Kemisse and in the Gerado valley in the midst of a full-blown famine raging in full swing killing people like flies. I had wept then till I was drenched in my tears. At that time crying and sharing whatever coins I had in my pockets even if it was meaningless gave me some meaning. Who said tears don’t help. I think it helps keep some sanity when things go so unimaginably tragic. It can help you elude yourself and gives you the feeling that you are helpful while you are totally helpless. I am afraid that I cannot cry now. I am not feeling like it at all. If anything, I now feel sick- sick down to the stomach and angry and outraged or may be a combination of these all. I wish I could cry but I am afraid that is not the feeling running in me now. May be I have ran out of tears. May be I am so far away across the Oceans to feel the real agony. My eyes are now as dry as the desert. I just saw a pictures on my computer screen, of two beautiful children with their muddy faces fighting it on to survive for a day or two and the mother who waits for her child to die in her arms. I just saw a skeletal picture of a dying man staring with his piercing eyes on the Economist that carries the title Bad weather, bad government, worst leader . The old man’s eyes are so penetrating that he seemed he wants to blame it on me or extract something out of me. I can’t understand why he looks like intimidating to me and even scaring the hell out of me. Frankly I was afraid of him and felt like running away. I used to cry when I saw people like him and I think I saw at least one like him in 1984. I flipped to another website instead and saw the footages on the BBC website of the child who is reported to being resigned to even chase the fly sitting on his eyes and told the BBC reporter that he expects to die in a few days and before any food arrives in the village. I also saw the sorry face of my country’s Prime Minister and his begging mouth trying to seek out help from the world. The last time I saw his picture was when he was trying to outthink the thinkers of Addis Ababa University, my former workplace. (Thank you god for saving me the agony of sitting and listening to all that farce). Watching him beg, I felt like lashing out against him. But a part of the rational me said why should he take the blame alone. He is only the latest face in a series of begging leaders. And what about all the rest of us who have studied how other people solved their problems, even far more serious problems, and have allowed this to occur not once but so repeatedly? Shall we all go free blaming it on someone? I answered it no. If we are to solve this problem we have to begin by agreeing that a big crime is committed. People have died in mass of hunger and somebody or some entity must be held responsible and indicted. Somebody, some entity has committed a repeated crime against humanity in Ethiopia and we should not let it get away with mass murder. I am led to believe that this is the first order of business if we are committed to solve this degrading and shameful tragedy from happening again. I am not for the blame it on someone game. I will stand and get counted to take my responsibility. I am tired of making accusations but for one last time let’s find the real culprit and make the indictment. What has gone so wrong and who is doing this to this beautiful country? Don’t add to my sickness telling me the reason is the weather. This is a tired and sick joke. This is a human failure, and humans have to take the blame. This is the real name of the problem. I believe this is the truth whether one likes it or not. In fact, one set of criminals are those that blame the weather in an attempt to try to hide the real culprit. These people are lying through their teeth and should be held responsible for their lie. In 1973 the dergue and all of us blamed the famine on the Emperor and the emperor’s men blamed it on the weather. In 1984 I have heard the guys in power now speak full mouth blaming the dergue for the famine, the dergue blamed it on the weather. Now the Meles and his people blame it on the weather. The critics blame it on its policies. How ironic that the more things change the more they remain the same. The same television set the same pictures only new beggars. This is a sickening game and it more than stinks. Frankly the weather has nothing to do with our famine. I repeat! the weather has nothing to do with our famine. I am a student of Geography and understand my trade very well and can argue this point successfully. I can point to you countries that do not see a gallon of rain dropping on their land but have not had famine. You don’t have to be a food producer country not to be struck by famine for that matter. I have seen far more sever droughts that occurred in many parts of the world and have not caused a case of hunger let alone famine that kills people in mass. South East Asia lives under the same monsoon today as it use for very many years, but look at the long way they came trough to trash famine out of their system and that only in a few decades. I can go on and on and on with similar examples. I am of the feeling that Ethiopia’s entire elite has to be on trial. Of course, first in the line of trial have to be the government officials who have made it their primary job to keep themselves in power rather than the welfare of the people. Of course, their crime is serious because they have been presiding over our misery in many cases tying the hands of people who want to make a difference. Their lies and sorry excuses must be punishable. I have heard EPRDF officials for example priding themselves for running a good early warning system of famine. These guys should be ashamed of it for their only job is preparing the country for early begging rather than fighting the root cause. Why can’t they think of begging as something unacceptable and humiliating in the first place and use the resource in that direction. Why do we need that RRC, or what ever is its name today? Why do we need institutions that lord over famine in the first place? What have these institutions done so far except institutionalizing famine and beggary? Wouldn’t it be a good idea to have an Institute of Famine Eradication instead of the Early Warning System or the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, which by the way consume huge resources themselves then becoming part of the problem rather than the solution? Why on earth should Ethiopia, the water tower of Eastern Africa, the land of hundreds of perennial rivers go hungry even for a day? Can’t we spend ten years working on one or two of the big river basins, which can more than feed the whole country? Don’t tell me that need capital and technology. Everyone knows that. Better beg for the damn technology and capital and squeeze the country’s resources once and work on both sides of the hand for ten years than become perennial and shameless beggars. Make it a policy priority and any average economic planner can tell us how to do it. Countries have dug their way out of this kind of messes. Why can’t we? We have to dig ourselves out of this mud and, believe it or not, there is no other way out. And there are those of us who only know how to complain and do not come up with a problem solving idea. I mean those of us who are educated and pride and congratulate ourselves with our educational achievements and success in life. Those of us who believe that our education is a license to escaping the fait of the unfortunate victims and an end in itself, particularly those of us in Diaspora who seem to have shed all senses of responsibility. How about those of us who have done nothing if any to stop the famine except playing the blame game? Don’t tell me you have contributed money in the past or you have cried. That was not the way to become part of a solution. Criminal are also those of us who try to hide ourselves in Ethiopia’s history - in Yohannes, Menilik or Tewodros and the glory of the Battle of Adwa as if these can be turned into a slice of bread or a drop of water now. And of course the demon that has possessed Ethiopia for so long has to be tried. The demon that makes the country eat her children? Don’t ask me how, but I feel the demon that made us worship guns and hatred and cruelty has to be tried and punished one way or another. The demon that made the Abay River disgorge the mass of our soil and water outside of Ethiopia has now made another river out of airplanes that carry away and disgorge the country’s children in Europe and America. Here is my bigger fear. If everything and every criminal is left as is, I am sure there will be another, perhaps bigger, famine down the line. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet, as my American brothers would say. Those of you who want to keep on crying you can go ahead and cry. Get drenched in your tears and you will see what you can get. May be it helps you get over it for now. Rest assured it won’t help you solve the problem. As for me, I have done that already. I don’t want to look like an idiot any more. Even if I want to cry I have tears no more

Thanks editor to your unflinching criticism to the Ethiopian state and parliament and to your feed back on Ethiopian current burning issues.

Nature strike us again and we are incompetent to give care and love to the unnourished.

We are not the world as the world is competent to manage and restructure its own derailed system.

We are:
Incompetent in the work field.
incompetent in producing food crops.
incompetent in politics. in governance.
incompetent in finance administration.

Now it is time to say our prayers to God and to give us mind and heart to think, and roll up our sleeves, hands to dig the earth.

[Lekim, Mother Nature causes drought NOT famine. As the Indian Nobel Prize Winner economist Amartya Sen said, “Famines do not occur in functioning democracies”. So long as Ethiopia is ruled by a tyranny, famine will sadly continue to occur. Just last week Dr, Amartya Sen was on WAMU 88.5 Kojo Nnamdi Show discussing about his new book and talked about Ethiopian famine on that show. ]

The use of Sen’s famous thesis and nazretoche:

"No famine has ever taken place in the history of the world in a functioning democracy," was the famous thesis for a long time since Sen wrote it in his book "Democracy as Freedom" (Anchor, 1999). In his explanation Sen argued that governments who want to remain on power through democratic elections "have to win elections and face public criticism, and have strong incentive to undertake measures to avert famines and other catastrophes." Hence, he reached to the conclusion that “no famine…in a functioning democracy”. To the greater extent I do indeed agree with his assertion while I strongly disagree with nazretoche interpretation in the current Ethiopian crisis and their misuse of the thesis.

First and for most what nazretoche failed to understand is democracy is a process and have different development stages. What Sen talking about is “a functioning democracy” which is a quite different situation with “an emerging democracy”, actually there is no a functioning democracy in Africa, all African democracies are emerging democracy.

One interesting argument forwarded against Sen’s assertion was by Stephen Devereux in “Old failures feed new famines: starvation strikes emerging democracies” in which he observed the occurrence of famine in three African emerging democracies: Malawi, Ethiopia and Niger respectively and his conclusion was “all three cases violate Amartya Sen's law on democracy and famine: that no substantial famine has ever occurred in a democratic country, no matter how poor.”, he opined that if Sen’s thesis is to be taken seriously “these very young democracies have yet to be 'consolidated'”. Contrary to Sen’s narrow perception of democracy that failed to consider young democracies Devereux argued in relation to emerging democracies and famine “in countries with immature political institutions and weak state capacity, the international community must be held accountable for the policies it advocates--at the very least, responsibility for famine prevention must be shared.”

More recently there are a raising number of tests and critics to Mr. Sen’s thesis. One a comprehensive report on the many Sen’s critics was in Michael Massing article “Does Democracy Avert Famine” (March 1, 2003), published in the New York Times. While this article brought forth the many serious arguments against Sen’s thesis based on India’s experience which is the very focus point of Sen’s research and shows how Sen’s assertion can’t apply in one of the most democratic country in the world which even America can’t deny it. According to Massing concerning democratic India “there are growing reports of starvation. In drought-ravaged states like Rajasthan in the west and Orissa in the east, many families have been reduced to eating bark and grass to stay alive. Already thousands may have died. This is occurring against a backdrop of endemic hunger and malnutrition. About 350 million of India’s one billion people to bed hungry every night, and half of all Indian children are malnourished.”

Mr. Sen in his own words “it would be a misapprehension to believe that democracy solves the problem of hunger.” Further Massing noted that Mr. Sen himself “was baffled by the amount of attention his comments about famine and democracy had received. The Nobel committee, in awarding its prize, did not even mention this aspect of his work, he said, adding, however, that many newspapers had seized on it and misrepresented it.” In this statement Sen is clearly showing the misuse of his thesis while downplaying the strong relationship peoples like nazretoche created in between democracy and famine. In fact the reality on the ground is shouting to nazretoche that there is less famine and more development in authoritarian China than democratic India.

The truth is there is no where in any decent non-political writings where government becomes the first cause of famine with the exception of nazretoche’s propaganda machinery. If any one wishes to do research the first cause of famine is nature and government comes last among others. Perhaps one of the strongest arguments pointing at the weakness of government in relation to famine is that famines is a slow process and have a long gestation periods which means that it is possible to detect it earlier to prevent it. Hence, failure to detect it for early warning is a government failure. However, these arguments itself have a number of shortcomings such as the ambiguous nature of early detection and also the inability to respond in a poor country like Ethiopia which have already millions dependent of food aid which means even if early detection is possible it only mean requests for more aid and that is solution is dependent of the free will of the rich.

I am not trying to create an argument against democracy; I think democracy should be consolidated as fast as possible my argument is against your (nazretoche) attitude and interference in a free discussion. It seems you have forgotten your true position which is reporting issues as they are not guiding us. There is a lot to be said about your biased way of conducting a discussion forum. I don’t think you are helping the Ethiopian poor by taking sides and promoting hate against the government. Your dissatisfaction and emotion might be understood in the bitter reality of Ethiopia’s failure to deal with famine but your taking sides while running a forum for democratic dialogue is a total failure and irresponsible. If there hasn’t been a hate mongering in Ethiopian politics I would have been the first critic against this government but in the face of this type of oppositions that blindly criticizes the government for every topic the need to support and stand for the government is paramount and patriotic and I am telling you for those of us who stand for the truth the more you abuse democratic dialogue and critical criticism the strongest we become against you.
On the final analysis I always sense there are things seriously wrong about you (nazretoche) and the Diaspora world in their political thinking and Ethiopia.

POLITICAL HATE MONGERING IS THE ROAD THAT LEADS TO THE NO WHERE BULLSHIT.

This is a heart breaking story indeed. The good thing is that even the BBC, reporter said"the government is willing to help to over come this great food crisis as quickly as possible. Not like Mengistu regime in 1984.In 1984, when starving people were travelling to Sudan searching for food, Deruge in the other hand use mig 21,mig 23 and gunship helicopter and bombed to those starved people instead of helping.

Now one qustion to those hatred individuals though, they kept saying while Tigray developed the south people are hungry. But when I watch the BBC reporter, some of them reporting from Tigray because there are as many houngry people as the south as well. So where is the development in Tigray then you hatred leflafi idividual talking about? or this is their evil hatred business as usual like the stupid wusha SATANAW.

I have a message for those hatred stupid diaspora. If you wanted to wiped out hunger from Ethiopia forever, you have to come to your sense and work together hand to hand developing our nation. If you keep barking good for nothing about your country, about the government for non senese there never be solved the problem at all. I think the government is doing the best way possible to ensure that the food crisis to be secured as well as the development of the nation, while you eating your fat hamburger until your vein clotted with massive of cholestrol and leading your death.

It all boils down to one and only one thing. The primary first step in a development for any nations is the eradication of food shortage. all other developments come after. Of course while building the nation transportation development road construction will be embraced. As long as we( Ethiopians) do not have a sustainable agricultural system with modern way of farming and cultivating our land there will always be a natural disaster like famine.
the bottom line Meles did not even think about such development, instead a quick superficial building here and there just for photoop for the wolrd media.

I cannot believe it. I was living in the golden age of Ethiopia where everything was perfect and even if you lived in poverty, there was still enough food to go around. It is shocking news to find that the regim has denied food aid for 11 years even though there was a famine before this time. Please Ethiopians who live outside of the country, let us help our people. We blamed Haile Selasee, then we blame Mengistu, and then we blame Woyanay. Let us stop finger-pointing and get to the real issue by helping our people. We are facing another famine in our country and we may face it yet again in the future. The feudal government could not defeat it, the communists made it worse and now woyane has turned out to be clueless again. There must be a systemic problem in our ancient agricultural way of life and it seems that we are unable to conquer our own backwardness. This is very sad but what is even sadder is how Ethiopia has failed to raise good children who strive with honesty and diligence to make their Country better for the next generation. An illustration of this is the commentary in this web page. It is savage, it is tribalist, it is irrational and thoroughly toxic. If we were the enemies of Ethiopia we could not damage it any worse than by what we are doing by our comments here. None of us suggest for a way to tackle the problem other than condemning the government. Governments can change again and again as they did for almost forty years in Ethiopia and none have found a way out of the mess.

A critical issue here could be that we need to address the problem of over population. A sustained birth control education will certainly help. Another help maybe investing in huge commercial farming imitative, in this case, just for the main crops, not to replace the farmers, but to stabilize prices in good times and to support the population from famine during climate induced food shortage. Water management, soil conservation/maintenance, terracing, dam building, irrigation and other such managements are relevant subjects for discussion here and we may even learn something from our own agricultural scientists.

Famine and hunger is nothing new to the world. China, India and Ireland, to name a few, have gone through famine and have lost millions and millions of people in the process. They have now conquered it not just by one formula or another but also during the time they were governed by different political systems. For example, India solved it in a democratic system, China did it a communist system and Ireland solved it during a semi-colonial system. Famine is beyond politics it is like an epidemic that comes and attacks the innocent again and again. If a system is not in place to change the land management using modern technology and education and if controlling population growth is not incentivized or enforced we will have famines again and again.

As shown in the comments above presumably from Ethiopians, if all we can offer Ethiopia is tribal hysteria and toxic and meaningless death treats to each other, all I can say is “God save Ethiopia from us”. What I see and hear is lies shouted-out by the angry ignorant and the deafening silence from those who have a lot of good to say.

I see that some of the moronic and heartless woyane cheerleaders are unhappy about nazret's relentless head on approach to publicize Ethiopians' unforgiving plight under the shortsighted and mercenary rule of dictator Meles Zenawi. If you are wondering what this website has contributed for the good of Ethiopia, well you are at the middle of it, aren't you dedebit's morons? It has become the voice for the people you wanted to die silently with starvation in a nation of plenty. It has exposed the treason and biblical failures of your phony king in a time when he is annoying the entire world to save Africa from global warming, and as expected you are crying foul about it. Treasonous and Dictator Meles, the man who couldn't put an ounce of effort in 18 years to make a good use of the Ethiopian great rivers to possibly end the cycle of hunger and starvation within the country representing the entire continent on the issue of global warming and food insecurity is utterly ridiculous! Nobody asked him to solve the whole problem in Ethiopia all by himself, nobody! What we are saying is, on top of his steady incompetence to lead the country and unparalleled treason to compromise the long term interest of the country, his two decades old dictatorship has been the prime obstacle for competent Ethiopians who have the urge and will to extend a helping hand in the battle against poverty. He has created an environment where schools are teacher-less, hospitals doctor-less, the rivers utterly useless, the religious and justice systems corrupt, the country seaport-less, the banks gold-less and more importantly the farms and market crop-less. And, as if we hadn't had enough of him in the past 18 years, he wanted to stay for five more years. For what? The starvation of 15 million Ethiopians is not enough? Yeha,

Don't worry because your "chosen" people will not starve as long as the "annointed" midget is in power. All the cash is in the hands of EFFORT and the Midget's wife is the accountant. There are hundreds of huge warehouses these mafias have built and stored all accessible grains in them for such emergency to feed the "chosen" people. Those starving are the ones producing the grains and either lured or forced to sell it to these mafias. EXC is the newer innovation to facilitate this. Who in the world thinks Wolaita is starving. This area gets rainfall twice a year: one in the main rainy season in the summer and the monsoon rains in Belg. They can grow crops more than once a year and grow cereals and root crops in large quantity. The woyanne loot never ends on only cash and gold, but grains, too. The only solution to this is to eliminate the monsters once and for all from the face of that cursed land.

Halafi Mengedi,
You suggest a role to be played by the so called generals to take care of the midget and his parasitic "families". If you can recall, both Meles and Sebhat have clearly indicated that the "army" is not for Ethiopia and Ethiopians, but to protect them and their interest only since they are paying them directly. Read past comments made by these two evils. They think all looted money in the name of Tigrayans is their sole belonging and they can use it to protect their mere survival.

Shewarega,
You think Seye is the man after Meles. However, you should remember that this guy is one of those who killed many to bring the midget to power and only distanced himself merely fighting for his share of the loot. Remember how much riches his family accumulated in few years coming to Addis empty-handed? Mengistu Haile-Mariam once said, the thief steals together in unison, but fights over the loot as enemy. Go figure!

I posted at Aiga over two dozen times (and trust me the door opens there once every three months, lol), and they posted only one comment, which was promptly removed the same day. They simply have no shame crying in here.

Dear brother Tolla,

I talked above about the power of GOD, not Seeyee. But since you mentioned it, let me tell you something. Let alone Seeyee I forgave Mengistu long time ago. Whatever change arrives in Ethiopia, if we all want a peaceful change that is, two things have to happen. One, the army leadership, at least most of them, have to agree with the change. Two, those who will come to power, thou for a transition period, have to be people of great character and willing to truly adress the complex and complicated political needs of Ethiopia. As Halafi once explained in detail, most of those at the head of the army are paid agents of MALLT, who have shown in 2005 that they will do whatever necessary to keep the looters in power. However, there are also many others, who truly understand the grave situation the country is in. The only person those in the second group will trust is Seeyee. That is one of the reasons it is very paramount he should be in the leadership for this change the overwhelming majority of Ethiopians look for. I also believe he has sincerely changed, of course you do not agree to that. But in the future once the change comes, it will be upto the Ethiopian people to decide who governs them. People have opened their eyes wide, be machebereber

Where is your compassion, anger and disappointments of this failed government? Why are you people blaming the messenger and then make one excuse after another to the leader of the country’s commander and chief dictator Melass? Haile Selassie was blamed for the famine for not acting sooner to save lives and so was the other cold--blooded killer Mengestu. Why should Melass be exempt from criticisms for not acting sooner? Melass should have been prepared in advance to avoid this catastrophe; hundreds and thousands of people lives would have been saved. Once again, Just like the previous administration the Ethiopian leader is begging after the fact. Melass should have known better and done better, but unfortunately this man has no heart.
Building an international airport in a small province like Tigrae, empty buildings in Addis and going to war with a neighboring country like Somalia without being provoked is indeed a photo up and a show up. All the Woyanes who have taken millions of Ethiopian tax payer money and stashed it in various foreign countries should be forced by UN and US to return the stolen money to feed our people.

For eighteen years, woyanes have been shooting the messengers and hiding the facts under the rug is what brought us to this. Now, the problems are so big it can not be hidden under the rug any longer. And hard working Ethiopians are going to die without the fault of their own. Given the above irrefutable facts, I am having difficulties understanding those of you who are blaming our government for such natural disasters. In our country draughts seem to come in cycles of 20 to 25 years. The only short coming I see in our government with respect to such natural disasters is the lack of adequate planning and preparedness. However, labeling charges of “genocide” against our government and claiming that the root causes of such disasters is mismanagement, tyranny, corruption and nepotism is nothing but a political propaganda by G-7, Kinijit and those who are responsible for bleeding our Ethiopia for the last 100 years. Genocide is cutting off food aid from a starving population, burning crops, bombing and butchering people in their homes, killing the bread winners of the family and deliberate deforestations as your comrades Mengistu and Hailu Shawl did during their reign. My question to nazreth is that if you think a regime change in Ethiopia long over due, which opposition force do you think should have spearhead or should spearhead to bringing a realistic change. I hope sure your answer is "NONE" unless you are blinded by the same woyanes ethnic politics. You, me and all of us haven't worked enough to achieve democracy in Ethiopia. Are Ethiopian elites ready to support and embrace a national political movement who may not have a leader from our own ethnic domain to bring democratic change? The answer is no....The struggle for democracy hasn't started yet. What we have in Ethiopia is ethnic competition between Oromo, Amhara and Tigre elites...don't know who will say enough is enough but the longer we wait the higher the chance Ethiopia will be another Somalia....

Tplf (Ethiopian government that is) controls the media (print, internet, TV, etc,) and telecommunication. Ethiopia is the only country in Sub-Seharan africa that filters internet.

Tplf controls all land in the country. No one is allowed to own land in the country.

Tplf controls most of the non-farm businesses in the country through EFORT. Privatization in Ethiopia is defined as transferring public property to TPLF owned businesses.

TPLF controls the military. 57 of the 60 top generals are former TPLF fighters and ethnic tigre 18 years after taking power.

TPLF resisted any change in policy including privatization of land. Meles is quoted saying "over my dead body. The purpose is clear: he wants all farmers to remain subject of his rule.

We have seen the nightmarish result of his "revolutionary democracy". More people are dependent on foreign aid than any time in history. Do not blame Mengistu now; you have ruled the country longer than him. You ruled the country like a private property. Under your leadership, TPLF has absolute control of the lives of 80 million people.

WHO ELSE DO YOU BLAME FOR THE FAILURE OF YOUR POLICY?

Meles, take responsibility like a man. You have no one to blame. The buck stops on you. Rain failure didn't kill people anywhere else except in our country. It is time for you to RESIGN. I don't care who you give the power to. It could be to another kin of yours from adowa. I don't care. Resign now and give others to try their chances.

Forgetting all the atrocities he has done to the Ethiopian people, should not he be held accountable only for this? He and his good for nothing party should step down and let the capable to lead the country.

Meles zenawi and EPRDF shall take all the responsibility for the innocent lives lost in the famine. for us, as concerned citizens, we do not have to waste our time debating the ill minded, useless and illiterate woyane scouts in this site or anywhere else. The only short coming I see in our government with respect to such natural disasters is the lack of adequate planning and preparedness. -- lekim
Aboy lekim, that "only short coming" has become a reason for the starvation of millions of Ethiopians. When the Bush administration mishandled and mismanaged the natural disaster in the city of New Orleans, it has lost all its little left credibility and later dislodged out of office disgracefully. The US of America has the technological and economical capacity to prevent the death of its citizens, however leadership incompetence in White House has led to the world to witness, shockingly, the floating of American citizen corpses at the middle of their own fully drowned city. Then, the administration's "we will save America from foreign terrorists based in Afghanistan and Iraq" narrations have become nothing more than a laughable empty rhetoric. Your government, which is nothing more than a mafia grouping, has close to two decades to plan and prepare for the kind of testing times we are facing today, unfortunately the time has been wasted purposefully so that you can keep begging in the name of the systematically impoverished Ethiopians and shamelessly divert the money into your foreign bank accounts. In the mean time, Ethiopia's rivers are feeding millions in rainless Sudan, Egypt and else where in East Africa. Even the pig by the name of Al Amoudin is planning to take advantage of Ethiopia's potential to satisfy the demand of his relatives in Saudi Arabia. The country has all the capacity she need to ensure food sufficiency, however since achieving that goal never was woyane's plan from the get go, even a dam that was completed by the derg regime has to be outrageously abandoned for eighteen solid years. When we ask meles why he hasn't take the lead to develop irrigation projects and other forms of mechanized agricultural developments, he blamed the shortage of money within the country's coffers he has been robbing though we don't know where the resource is coming from, as Justice 2010 pointed out, to raise empty buildings everywhere and most importantly to pay millions of woyane cadres, including yourself, and feed murderous federal police bulldogs. As far as he is concerned, that is a reason enough to sell our land to Sudan, Arabs, Indians and other foreign bidders to harvest crops inside Ethiopia to feed not the hungry Ethiopian market but the people in their respective countries. For Meles, Ethiopia and Ethiopians are nothing more than a cash cow and the peoples' starvation is not even worthy of mentioning on international news outlets. If that is not a contempt to genocide, i don't know what! In another word, woyanes have neither the leadership capacity nor the interest to realize a self-reliant, independent, and strong Ethiopia. I agree with the editor that you folks, the incompetent, treasonous, corrupted and genocidal woyanes, are the only source of famine in Ethiopia. In fact, as challenger said it, you are the famine itself!

Dynamite,

We all know Ethiopia is a one party nation and that party, Woyane is controlling the wealth, land, politics, top military positions, businesses and the economy.

The county’s wealth is distributed among the top leaders of TPLF for now, namely Meles, his ignorant wife, Arkabe, Sibhat and some few remnants who rose up form ashes.

However, just because they seem to control these various positions, it doesn’t mean will stay that way. It is very simple to turn the table around.

Mind you Woyane are very few up to 5% of the people although armed to their teeth. Remember Dergs were armed to their teeth as well they are gone now.

Woyanes may kill few and we need to know that but it impossible to kill 95% of Ethiopians. The 95% of Ethiopians have to is rise up in one voice and power and dismantle the Woyane tyrant networks and collaborators. Take the country back to Ethiopians.

Where is the outrage from the so-called donor countries that kept pumping money into a tyrant bank account in the name of the hungry victims?

During Emperor Hailesellasie after he ruled for 40 years of peace and stability, they were quick and sneaky to show the world that they saw starved people before the King saw it. Until that time Ethiopia used to be called “THE BREAD BASKET OF AFRICA”.

Now once they installed Meles without the consent of Ethiopians whom works not for the interest of Ethiopia, famine has become normal recurring event every year and all MELES HAS TO SAY IS THERE IS FAMINE and GIVE ME MONEY. At the same time World Bank is quick to give the money.

No questions asked as to why Meles couldn’t solve this problem, no dramatizations, no exaggeration and no outrage as we have witnessed during the King and Mengistu era.

Ethiopia is better of without the help of the World Bank and so called donors who kept strengthening Meles tyrannical regime. They know it well that this money will go to Meles’s election campaign that will result in suppressing and killing Ethiopians.

In my opinion, the only people who are trading in our name and exploiting our natural disasters are people like G-7 and Kinijit, people like you who saw Ethiopia as your private property and bled her to her graves for the last century. Such disasters don’t happen over night. They are a result of changing environments which took over a century to manifest itself in this way.

"...To add insult to injury, in 1984 Ethiopia had its own port to receive food aid, thanks to TPLF, it is now a landlocked country."

Loser, you're missing the main point here. It was in 1984, when you had our ports, in your hands, that you starved your people to death, introducing famine for the second time. It was in your KoriT's watch, while holding our ports, that Ethiopian famine for the first time came in World's face.

Don't try to shoot your cheap propaganda here, by attributing your ethnic conflicts and its subsquent consequence, famine way of life, to not having ports. You guys are worthless, lazy, and Western slaves to dismantle the Whole Africa, just to pretend "Independent African" people, in reference to the colonized Africa.

Losers, Eritrea's ports are always open to Ethiopians, not just to humanitarian issues, but even in other times. Your problems are your obsessive compulsiveness to get Assab which you failed to learn from for decades.

The port was even open in 1998-2000 war while our people were being deported, as the Woyane and its psychotic and timkihtegna Amharan hopeful intellectuals, supported by the Western pigs rejected to use the port, hence causing delay to the needy and incurring more cost, just not to give in to Eritreans. So, don't even go there, attempt to use the port issues here. your cheap shot won't do any good.

How come a mice can carry weapon and fight? Z-mice is a typical Mice - interims of sneaking & sniffing around at night and eat the left-over food in the kitchen. However, a mice is a smarter creature than Z-mice because mice can use its mind to think and decide what to do without anyone’s direction or order unlike Z-mic. Z-mice is “dingay–ras” moron , who is immoral and cannot even to differentiate between mother and lover, who cannot try to write a single word without his masters’ direction or guidance. He cannot even write a single descent sentence about one issue unless he saw someone’s opinion and respond to that person by using his dirty mind and mouth.

Z-mice is used to carry Weyane’s weapons (they used him as a donkey), and following Weyane’s foot step after Weyane rescued him. Since he was not a fighter or “Weyane’s hero”, he cannot get a single leading rule and also since he in psychosis disorder, he cannot be even around them.

Z-mice is an expert of insulting people. He is a classless moron person who stupidly west his time all these years to learn bad words and to take over these insulting job on this web site. This is the only dirty job left for him, I mean besides sleeping with Melese’s wife and Melese’s daughter.

Both British journalists made some stupid comments about lands not being distributed to the farmers therefore farmers are not motivated to work hard

If those farmers are willing to cultivate the land they are free to lease it from the government. And not owning the lands is not the reason that Ethiopia is facing famine years after years.
As far as I am concerned people like free ass would use any reason to rebuke Meles for every single thing that goes wrong in the country.
But I want to answer those two Brits that when Mengustu left and Meles came to power, most of the Kottus in Harargue went back to their ancestra lands and started to cultivate Khat and all kind of export fruits and vegetable. They usually present their products to those middlemen that are buying directly from them and send the fruits and the vegetable to Djibouti - for higher profit.

They produce very minimal staple foods just to cover their own needs and they concentrate mostly on export crops - in my language this is greed and not Meles fault. The city of Harar, jijiga and DD get only those vegetable and fruits that are left over from the export.

Both the people of Wollo and Tigray can go back in their ancestral land and start cultivating their staple food. If the government start selling those lands to the oligarch of Addis then we will go to 34 years back to that feudal era- like Mengustu said - Give the lands to the people who are interested to cultivating it.

Unfortunately at this present time - the whole country is infused with this insatiable greed to become rich as fast as possible.
For that stupid Free ass - Meles never told to anyone living near the Nile or any other rivers not to use the water for irrigation - The people of Wollo and Tigray are just lazy and plus the Nile does not even run in their states. If one goes all along the Nile both in Egypt and Sudan, farmers have been toiling the lands from time immemorial - Ethiopians from the North are just immersed in their religion and each day of the week it is consecrated for either Mariam, or Kudus Gabriel, Kudus Michael etc,, any excuse not to work hard but enjoy their Tela and Arekae.
Just go and see how the Egyptian farmers toil from daybreak to dusk - their only day off is Friday

One of the thing I blame Meles is that in those 18 years he did not establish some kind of organization that would oversee the distribution of food and to control the export of food. They have to feed the Ethiopian people first and then export the rest - If one goes to Djibouti their markets are full of Ethiopians grains and vegetable. It has nothing to do with that laissez faire kind of economic philosophy - in my opinion let us control the food that we export and let us use those lands to cultivate those staple food instead of horticulture and Khat

Lekim,

Why do you say drought, lack of rain, is the sole reason for starvation? There are many countries in the world whose annual rainfall amount is less than that of Ethiopia under drought condition. Look to African countries in Sahara Desert and those in close proximity, getting less rain than Ethiopia under drought condition. Check metreological facts. These countries with sand, and no water, are keeping their population alive by any means without begging for hand out every year. Take northern and nortwestern Africa as an example. Why are we begging each year? Even Somalia and Djibuti, with little rain than us do not beg for food. You may say there is overpopulation in Ethiopia. So what? The solution is not rain, but good and responsible governance to check on current and future potential problems and work toward tackling them before they overwhelm you. Who is to blame for this? The answer: the ones on power making decision and administering.

Ethiopia has been blessed with many rivers (and fertile land) that fill up with the rain we are getting. however, we are not making any use in irrigation, except for the Awash river. Our water is going to Sudan, Egypt, Somalia, Kenya, and Djibuti without optimal use for sustainable agriculture.

ewunetun tenageru,

The major solution is privatization of the land so that each farmer can work on larger plots with modern technology, like irrigation, mechanization, crop management practices and better marketing. Ethiopia has about 85% of its population making a living directly from agriculture. Imagine how much each farming family tills to make a real living. Milas yemitakil meret ager atalemam!!!! The farmer is less productive just because of the size of the plot. In developed countries, only 1-3% of the population is engaged in agriculture, each working on larger plots with modern technology and bigger investment. I am not suggesting to catch up with the west overnight, but encourage the gov't to practice true privatization, which is free from their usual politiking, and adopt modern farming practices by bringing the proporton of farmers siginificantly lower than 50%.

You see the rain fall shourtage was there more in Mengistu and Haile time.

All are the same one way they are trying to hide. Meles bluffed not to logn ago we are self sefishent the NGO got to go!
No reporter since they are reporting false news and so on. Now we know why many reporters are kicked out!
It was to cover up! What makes me so sad is Tigray has experienced the drought more than almost any province and should no how it feels now their leaders are ignoring the public to die. Hide and lie!

Take responsibility!

I would not blame Meles if it was 50 100 K people were starving since it is hard to know but in this scale 6.2M no one else but Meles and his buddies in crime should be responsible to some extent!

Stop covering up while people are deing in thawsands! and more to die!

justice 2010 says:

"Not a single concern about the starving Ethiopians, just full of hate and rage. I wonder why these woyanes and their cousins like ZXAmiche are so hateful and cold. I guess it must be in their DNA."

Mr. Justice, in spite of Woyanes, the cancer of HOA, I wondered if you knew what the real meaniing of "hate" was, when it is concerning ZXAmiche or Shaebia.

You should have learned by now, how Shaebia offered donors to use Eritrean ports to facilitate relief, even during the critical time of 1998-2000 war. In usual denial mode, it seems to be rather in your nefTegna DNA not to accept facts. And you have to show me how cold I was towards innocent victims of famine, except exposing your indifference as nefTegna intellectuals, who always belittle Eritrea and its people, to look big.

Unlike your delusional belief, neither my nature DNA nor my nurture behavior has any hate. Your problem is that you're allergic to accept reality. As African bigot, you failed to accept Eritrea as an independent country. And that's why you continue to suffer as you're sticking your nose in others affairs, to get diplomatic and economic help, at the expense of others.

Whether Woyane, KoriT, or mengistu, you're someones tool, hired to dismantle others. And every time you put yourselves on the way, you pay the price.

As far as US is considered, kebalebetu yaweKe buda newina, don't tell me the story otherwise. From 1952 Federation to our 30 years armed struggle, to our referendum, to instilling conflict in Badme, to act sabotage from implimenting the Badme ruling, to threatening to put Eritrea in a list of "Terror sponsoring states", to the fabricated Somalia affairs, to sabotaging trade and hard currency, to using food as a weapon, etc, etc..you name it, tell me where the US policy have not played a detrimental role against Eritrea and its people. And that's one of the reasons why the Eritrean people will NEVER Kneel Down, for truth is on our side. We WILL NOT compromise on our identity to suit others' interest.

The problems is, just like what I said earlier, you're in a state of denial, just because you failed to accept Eritrea as an independent country. But, learn loser, Eritrea is an independent country that you cannot reverse its independence, NO MATTER WHO IS YOUR BACKER.

Fool yourself that Eritrea, with more than 500,000 young soldiers and nation buildres and with all the nation building Marshal Plan, will depend on our US Dollars we send and our population would starve to death without. It is just symbolic.

As far as Ethiopia, our neighbor, I am hopefull too that the UN and US under the Obama administration will do the right thing in Ethiopia's human rights and election issue, since it is your life pipe line. Not because US' policy had the heart to do so but, to save its damaged credibility.

When it comes to Afghanistan leader, Hamid Karazi, don't fool yourself again, that Obama is doing the change for the good of the Afghanistan people. Karzai's juice is already dried, just like other disposable leaders. It's time for new face lift.

Mr. justice, Eritrean people didn't have also the slightest idea that Woyane, not only backstab Eritrean friends who fed them and helped them to come to power, and who was on the route of healing the wounds with Ethiopian 30 years destruction, as much as that of Ethiopian people. If Eritreans had the idea that Woyane would be that hateful against Ethiopian and Eritrean people alike, they would not have been in Arat Kilo by now. So, don't just distort realities. Learn how Woyane came to be this criminal, in miscalculation of Abay Tigrai, and who was behind it.

Shaebia NEVER had the intentions of destroying Ethiopia. We wouldn't have lost 19,000 best citizens, if we knew Woyanes were that hateful who would never learn from history. But, don't expect us to be victims of your ethnic base hatered that come from time to time. We have to stop it so there would be lasting peace without any ongoing threat.

I am an Eritrean and it pains me to see the starvation in Ethiopia again and again as any human would.

It is upon you so called Ethiopians to help nourish your people NOW but also to seek a lasting solution.

There has always been this insatiable Ethipoian hunger to dominate and conquer of it's neighbour with military prowess that is easely arouses the patriosism of the casual Ethiopian patriot. Ethiopia need to conquer it's own problem first and stop being the bully of the Horn. During the Ethio/Eritrean, Meles even stated the Ethiopian are willing to fight on an emtpy stomach. Oh sure.

But in all case, just leave Eritrea out of this as this famine was there before Eritrea as it is now.

Many Eritreans have contibuted in the past and will do so this time if you get organized and seek a human solution and not attributed this issue to a political zing as many Woyane stooges are doing on this forum. Other like Justice 2010 are just misguided. Make the Justice 20Never, dude.

And although Nazret.com has hinted that this is a port issue, the focus of Ethiopians should rest on helping their people and not scoring a cheap political point.

Do you all have to wait to say something serious about your own country and people, until those Western medias feed you with manipulated information? I know, next week, everything will be forgotten, and we will all do the same thing, time after time, year after year...

Well, problems are not unique to Africa, but the Western media keeps propagating things by its continuous biased reporting. Africa has about 54 nations in all, yet the problems of a few are used to project and determine the overall image of the continent. Television viewers are inundated with news captions like " AIDS is killing Africa" or " Where have all the parents gone ". The BBC, CNN and SKY News are perpetual culprits of this kind of fatalistic overview of Africa. They make Africa the ideal dumping ground for all that's wrong or bad with the world. Then some get a chance to visit Africa and arrive to see a place teeming with jovial people, going about their daily lives - working, eating, sleeping and loving, just like people anywhere else in the world. They wonder where all the dying victims of AIDS are. How come they can still afford a smile and a friendly welcome, supposedly living on less than 1 Dollar a day. There's a sudden realisation that things don't quite add up and there has been some error in the calculations.

Shegaw yayew mesqia,
How dare you blame the victims! I don’t know where you grew up, but you sound like someone who grew up with plenty of money who have no clue about the hard life in Ethiopia. For your information, the hard working poor farmers are not the ones who export and import food and cattle to foreign countries. The market is controlled by few greedy government and business people who take advantage of the farmers. The poor farmers have to sell some of their crops to some business men for a lot less than what they work and deserve just to survive--like paying the government taxes, clothing and other life expenses. Farmers are not some irresponsible lazy spoiled city boy like you make them out to be, they work hard from sunrise to dawn just to survive. They don’t have the luxury to be lazy. As Maya Angelou said: “When you know better you do better.” and my friend, these farmers are doing what they know best. The government has a responsibility to develop a modern irrigation system for the farmers. How can you expect some thing from a farmer that have no clue about modern irrigation system.
I am sure it cost millions of dollars to start some kind of irrigation system from Nile and it is the government responsibility to accommodate and train the poor farmers. Selling the fertile land to foreign countries to grow flowers is not what I call a caring government--it is just pure government Greed that don’t give a darn about its people. And now we are seeing the proof of a government that failed its people. Ethiopian people are the prisoners and victims of the hateful Woyane government!!

Tolla,

We hear you but when you privatize land who is going to be the modern farmer and who is going to be the consumers?

If the Government allows only farmers who can use our land to grow most of the essential staple food and sell them in Ethiopia markets for Ethiopians and any access left over after the Government food banks are full capacities for “EXTRA ORDINARY” emergency reserve they can be allowed to sale them in foreign markets will be a wonderful strategy by the Government to adapt. Today what we see is sell our fertile farming lands to foreign countries solely to export them to food their own people on the expense of all Ethiopians for the sake of to earn a petty hard currency.

You mentioned that developed countries farmers are 1-3% of the population feeding the rest of 99-97% of the country population. It is true, but you should ask yourself that the 99-97% population where do they work or how do they make money to buy the farmers crops?

Developed countries have developed high technology industries to employ their 99% population and can afford to buy what other sectors produced. Incase of Ethiopia we do not have that kind of luxuries and 85% our people source of income is farming and may be 5% of them are merchants the remaining 10% of our populations are Government employees. If you privatize all the farming lands of Ethiopia, millions of farmer families will end up in Mekele, Dessie, Gonder, Debremarkos, Addis Ababa, Bale Goba, kefa, Lekemt and so on.

If I was the advisor of the Government, I would encourage the decision makers to allow a gradual and small scale privatization farming string attached to sell crops in Ethiopia market for Ethiopians and use some of their profit to settle our nomadic populations in the south by building houses and schools and show them how to farm and grow crops to feed their families and abandoned their ancestral culture to avoid for future disaster when there is no rain to feed their cattle. As the country converted to manufacturing sector from heavily farming, people can sale their farming lands and can work in other sector of the industries and can be balanced and reduce the risk of being homeless in the major cities of the country. This practice was done in South Korea, China now going on in India and took place in all major industrial countries. We can also learn the mistake took place in the name of privatization and free market from most of South American countries mainly Brazil, Argentina and Chile. The Meles and Eleni Gebre Medhin administration are doing now are exactly like the failure countries in South America.

Justice 2010,

From your name I can say you are one of the so called intellectual parasites of Ethiopian who sucks our hard working farmers and merchants like Guragea people as Shegaw Ethiopiawi mentioned in his early posts.

You are sounding like the American politicians who say anything to get elected and be the representative of special interest of different groups to cash in during and after their time in power.

I agree with Shegaw the responsibility lays primarily the victims themselves by not aware that the are responsible to food their own stomach and their children they are breeding like the SERENGETI WILD ANIMALS even though the wild animals are wise and cope with nature to survive for decade with out anyone hand out despite human being threaten, killing and destroying their natural habitats. Ethiopian people should be responsible not only their families but the dignity of the country. They should have kids they can raise them properly and feed themselves.

Our educated people failed the country century after century not show up and convert our society to march with the rest of civilized world. Instead they became a leech parasite like food stamp recipients in the Western countries. They do not touch youths properly to make them ready to face the reality country and contribute to the societies.

Our Government and politicians are inept and corrupt trying to live on the blood of the hard working farmers and merchants instead of facilitate all the things our productive society needs to bring products to the market in timely manner. They do not allocate or invest the meager resources wisely in order to get the highest return out of it. Some times they become the main obstacle for everything like Meles Zenawi.

Our stagnant culture and religious leaders are failed the country. Religious leaders should be blamed not to touch our society what is good for the society and the country. Begging is one of the sin lowest degrading to any society and hard work and any kind of work is the most honors for the society and the country.

The bottom line is anything you wish to have you must work for it, nor short cut life.

1. "challenging times for our entire planet let alone for our beloved country and people"

Dude we didn't hear anyone starving in India or China where the population is over a billion.

Many African countries are affected by this escalating drought. But we don't hear anything about starvation. So, by process of elimination, here is something to do with preparedness.

What has been done to avert this shameful famine? Why are we letting our citizens to go through this starvation of biblical proportion for another round? When we have so many things playing in our favor? Rivers running over large areas... Blessed fertile land to feed all Africa ... There are so many factors in our disposition that we could have used to avert this famine to take place - Tell your boss at Arat Kilo - to start by curbing the Khat and horticulture export. Only a fraction of the population enriched themselves from these export - Let's use these fertile lands to cultivate staple food. Where are the grain silos?... why don't we learn to replenish them in times of abundant harvest and used the grain in times of famine? Instead of succumbing to this humiliating and never ending begging for food?

2. "Given the above irrefutable facts, I am having difficulties understanding those of you who are blaming our government for such natural disasters."

Nobody is blaming Meles for those natural calamities - No one ever said that Meles is a rain maker -But like you even said it very eloquently we are wondering why a plan B or "adequate planning and preparedness" was not implemented immediately when we knew the rain were not coming this year?

Is it - 'Who cares" attitude? or is it deficiency in policy making? - Our ears are all yours.. We are ready to hear what you have to say about this famine??

Dude how many times do I have to tell you this - Meles came to power with the help of the CIA who did not want a Marxist state facing Saudi Arabia and those treasonous people of Gonder who bought to the lies of Meles, when he promised them "Your confiscated lands will be return to you" Once again greed was a pivotal role in ethiopian politics - here it brought the easy ascension to power - Meles Zenawi

If TPLF were a legitimate and accountable government, it would have acted over the past 18 years to change this ugly image by bringing new ideas and policies.
We are now talking about the effect of draught but the majority of the population is suffering due to the unaffordable high food prices mainly due to the intrige of your TPLF. For me, this is genocide which is aimed at killing the rest of non-Tigrian population indirectly.

Rahel,

Have you seen the Ethiopian map and drought affected regions?

Do you know which ethnic region where located?

If you saw Ethiopian map displayed on at the top of the same article and knew every region of the country of ethnic groups you would not say what you just said. Per the article and map of Ethiopia they showed us, there is no discrimination, the nine regions are affected by the drought and people are in need of food to survive for the next raining season.

Instead of that what can we do collectively and individually? Let’s talk about solution. From simple thing to the most complex ides. what can you and me do? As humankind, as Ethiopians, we might hive political differences. But thus how are hungry and starved dot care about our political deferens’s or don’t care we are from this tribe or not. HALAFI MENGEDI,
The idea of privatization is not new and worked well in non-communist countries. However, I never suggest or endorse any land to be leased or sold to foreign individuals or gov'ts, but only to capable domestic Ethiopians and to those foreigners with their origin in Ethiopia. My comment also is a gradual decrease, say from 85% to like 50%. Those losing the previledge of farming on theor own could be employed back to the farm or find other service jobs elsewhere or remain unemployed for a while. Whether we like it or not, no modern agricultural practices are feasible on the current parcel of land the farmer is tilling. It is not cost effective to use fertilizer, fungicides, herbicides, irrigation, etc. Forget using tractors on less than half a hectare of land. You start commercial level co-operatives of the time of Haile's era, like the lega-ambo of Alemaya college sites, in "older times" where farmers work for profit. Giving land for foreigners and taking out the produce out of the country, while you own people are starving, is criminal and is to be a traitor. Meles is doing that to return the favour for the financing and arms he collected from our enemies in some Arab regimes. This is temporary and will be resolved with the demise of Woyanne.

I hope we are not sitting back and waiting for the terrorist TPLF to turn democratic overnight and usher democracy in Ethiopia in its next sham election it is planning to hold. Nor are we expecting the West to push for democracy in Ethiopia because it is something they want to see in Ethiopia or it is in their best interest. Democracy comes to Ethiopia only when we the people are determined to have it and are ready to do what it takes to get there. Ghanaians have democracy not because the West pushed for it. Botswanans have it not because the West wanted them to have it. South Africans have it not because of the West and in fact to the contrary it is despite the West's unrelented effort to prolong the White minority rule by giving it all kinds of support. Same thing in Benin, Senegal and the list can go on. We will get democracy in Ethiopia only when we are honest to ourselves, to our people and our country that we do not have any fear from a full blown democracy in Ethiopia and ready to live with all the consequences of what democracy has to offer. We cannot go for democracy half heartedly. If we are pitching only for a democracy that brings the imposition of the domination of one ethnic group over the rest of the Ethiopian people despite their will or if we want democracy that only brings a click from our own ethnic group to power, it means we are not ready for democracy and no amount of the will of the West can help bring genuine democracy in such environment in Ethiopia. Such thinking only prolongs the status quo, i.e., the duration of the terrorization of the Ethiopian people by the TPLF terrorist group as it has been doing for the last 18 or so years. If we want to change the status quo, we have to first change ourselves and embrace democracy with our full heart without any if's and/or but's. Once we are firm on our decision about embracing democracy, the rest of the journey to democracy is a downhill walk. For all patriotic Ethiopians who really want to see Ethiopia put on democratic path, MEDREK is a good starting and compromising point for all the people of Ethiopia. It is not a perfect organization but it is the best compromise forum we can hope for under the present circumstances. Nobody or group, whatever that may be, can ever get 100% his/her or its way with a compromise organization like MEDREK but everybody every group gets something s/he likes in there. That is what is meant by compromise. After all, is politics not an art of compromise? Is life after all not full of compromises at every turn and twist? If we make compromise at every turn and twist in our daily lives, why are we not ready to compromise in politics for something greater than ourselves, namely, our country Ethiopia for our common good? In a country as diverse as Ethiopia, no one person or group gets 100% his/her or its way politically. We have to reconcile those diverse interests so that the whole is greater than the sum of the components. Here it is not a pride thing but a pragmatic innovative thing for the common good. We have to negotiate and compromise among ourselves in good faith to resolve our problems. Negotiations are not all about bargaining but being innovative to come up with solutions in which every stake holder comes our a winner without being left out or left behind. Negotiations require open mindedness and ingenuity. It requires feeling each others pains and fears putting oneself in the others' shoes. That is what MEDREK has tried to do. As always there is a room for improvement in what MEDREK has come up with. It is just the start and the first of its kind for compromise and democratic politics in Ethiopia. MEDREK was conceived in the womb of Ethiopia, developed in there for about 9 months. Our country Ethiopia just gave birth to MEDREK a couple of weeks ago. Ethiopia has placed a great hope on this youngest child of hers, MEDREK, to start to take her out of her long ordeal. Some have already started to tramp on this nascent child of Ethiopia to kill her hope at this infant stage without even giving it the benefit of the doubt and without giving it any chance to stand on its feet and explain itself. Not surprisingly, most of those who attack MEDREK are the terrorist TPLF members and their open and disguised paid supporters. They disguise as opponents of the terrorist TPLF but at the same time attack MEDREK to discredit it. They say there is no difference between MEDREK and terrorist TPLF so their conclusion is the status quo has to continue. That means by saying MEDREK should not be supported because it is the same as the terrorist TPLF that effectively means voting for the continuation of the status quo, namely, voting for the terrorist TPLF to continue to terrorize the Ethiopia people and destroy the country one by one. It is openly the terrorist TPLF members who are saying that MEDREK and terrorist TPLF are the same and ask us 'if they are the same why do we not keep the TPLF?'. Leaving their white lies and misrepresentations about MEDREK, let us assume for the sake of argument that they are right about their claim about MEDREK. Is it not still better to support MEDREK over the TPLF for both strategic and tactical reasons and also just for the sake of change even if there were the same in policy or otherwise? If we support MEDREK and help it defeat the terrorist TPLF in the upcoming TPLF's sham election and set democratic change of government in motion in Ethiopia, is it not still a move forward? If we remove the TPLF now, why can't we replace MEDREK in the next round right there and then should something better than MEDREK surfaces on the political waters of Ethiopia. You go to war with the army you have, not with the army you wish to have. AS We are in a war situation in Ethiopia right now, we go to war with the army of politicians and political leaders we have. There might be a few bad apples in there but that does not make the whole army bad and prevent us from deploying them. Moreover, as often is the case, elections are not clear-cut choices. They are rarely a choice between angels and devils. More often than not they are between an evil and the less evil even in best of circumstances. Nobody in his/her right mind is expecting perfection or a clean slate from the MEDREK leaders or members. Every one of us has his/her own baggage from his/her past lives and so do the MEDREK leaders and members. It is like a fool saying I am not going to get married until I find a very mature, sexually experienced and at the same time virgin girl. Given the urgency of saving Ethiopia from destruction and given the urgency to end the untold sufferings of her people in the hands of the terrorist TPLF, we cannot wait until politicians and political leaders we wish to have surface on the political waters of Ethiopia. I guarantee you, there are better politicians out there who can do better but for one or the other reason they are not there when we need them most. The kinds of politicians and leaders we wish to get have not shown up when Ethiopia is calling upon them as we speak. They have not reported to duty as of yet. The political dynamics of Ethiopia has thrust only a few brave politicians and leaders to the surface and into the political scene of the country at this very moment. These few brave politicians have responded to the repeated calls of the motherland, they reported to duty and have put their lives on the line for the just cause of the Ethiopian people and right now those brave few are those in MEDREK. Those are the ones we have right now at this critical juncture and we go to war with them as our leaders and if we give them the right kinds of support, I guarantee you, they will defeat the mediocre jungle cadres of the TPLF terrorist group. I have no illusion that it is going to be easy but I have no doubt in my mind that with the support of the Ethiopia people MEDREK will defeat the terrorist TPLF group. Our motto should be YES WE CAN. Some say 'we cannot win the terrorist TPLF in its own game'. This thinking is a defeatist position to begin with. Saying we are no match to the TPLF is a very disarming attitude and is being echoed by the disguised terrorist TPLF paid supporters hidden among us. We have shown that we can win the terrorist TPLF group by dealing it a knockout blow in its own game in its own field in May 2005 even with no or little preparations. There is no reason why we cannot repeat that victory again by working smart and innovative. The circumstances are much more difficult but we just need to rethink, redesign, retool and prepare ourselves matching up the circumstances. We defeated the terrorist TPLF in May 2005 not because it was easy or not because TPLF was easy on us or the circumstances were conducive for democratic elections. We defeated the terrorist TPLF then despite all the hurdles, intimidations, and terrorism by the TPLF. If we support change and democracy in Ethiopia we must support MEDREK. With our support MEDREK can force its way into the terrorist TPLF sham election and use it as a platform to elicit the long overdue change in Ethiopia. Taking all the necessary precautions not to play into the hands of the terrorist TPLF by being tricked to playing its game, we can and are capable of using its sham staged election drama as a rallying platform to create momentum and mobilize our people in order to use the TPLF's own game to our advantage. If we put our minds to work and work together, there is no doubt in my mind that we are capable of outsmarting the terrorist TPLF. I believe in the ingenuity of the Ethiopian people and all we need is to regain our self-confidence. Let alone these TPLF terrorists and their mediocre jungle cadres, we defeated European colonial powers. Except for their endless lies, the mediocre terrorist TPLF ringleaders are empty cans. The mediocre ringleaders of the jungle cadres of the TPLF terrorist group just try to lie smart to hoodwink the international donor community. We can pull it off if we put our minds together. Some among us have already given up and taken up the defeatist position. They say since we cannot outplay the terrorist TPLF because of this or that reason, the safe bet is to stay out of the game. Yes staying away might be the safe bet, but it is certainly not a winning bet. Even worse is staying away is a losing bet because by staying away and by denying MEDREK the support it needs and deserves from us, we are inadvertently helping the terrorist TPLF win. Mind you, our inaction or passivity is not effect neutral. Our inaction or passivity is in effect an active support for the terrorist TPLF. Moreover, a winning bet is a risky bet. In order to win and win big you have to take a risky bet. As the saying goes, no venture, no have. If you do not risk, you can't win big. So let us bet by supporting MEDREK whole-heartedly and I assure you it is a winning bet. Remember if we stay away from supporting MEDREK for one or the other reason, we are supporting the status quo and that means supporting terrorist TPLF. We are either with MEDREK or with the terrorist TPLF and there is no middle ground to hide. The choice is clear and it is ours to make. No lame excuse can absolve us off our historic responsibility at this historic juncture of our country Ethiopia. Let us say NOT IN MY NAME WHEN THE TERRORIST TPLF IS ATTEMPTING TO CHEAT THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY IN OUR NAME BY HOLDING SHAM ELECTIONS. LET US REGISTER OUR PROTEST BY ACTIVELY SUPPORTING THE MOST VIABLE PARTY AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW AND THAT IS MEDREK. Otherwise the TPLF terrorism and the direct consequence of it, namely, the famine will continue. Dire

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing this important story in the open. I think enough have been said and commented. And Now, it is time to act. Please find someone who is capable to organize and let us do something about for our people who are affected by this famine. Find an organization that can help us help the victims directly without going through the Woyane govt.. If every Ethiopian who live in Europe and US donate $100.00 US dollar, some can give more or less, to words this cause--about one million of us together can come up with over One Billion dollars to help our people. Oprah Winfrey’s organization always give 100% of donated money to wards the cause. Let us challenge people like Oprah, Bill Gates and some others if they could match our donations and help us with our goal. Let us show our unity and our dissatisfactions with Melass to the world and expose the child killer who doesn’t give a hoot for Ethiopians and our willingness to do something for our people. This time our concerns need to be known that--We Ethiopians do not want the money we donate not to go to Mekelle origin only; our efforts are to help all Ethiopians.

Please find a non-woyane to write an articulated letter to Oprah’s Organization and let us do something this time. I am willing to donate $200.00 US dollar towards this cause. Thanks again. Let’s do this!!!!

You are one another disagreeable stereotype of the diaspora world that move like a herd of animals jumping on their computer to write their non-sense whenever nazretoche selectively feed them topics to show thier empty patriotism.

If you need a suggestion on what to do to help the Ethiopian poor SUPPORT THE GOVERNMENT that is the only way out from the misery, and this applies to all Africans SUPPORT YOUR GOVERNMENT POLICY FOR DEVELOPMENT.

I just can't stop mesmerizing when Haneshas point their fingers on a government throughout history as if the government is not part and of the society, any governmetn or leader is a child of that counrty nurtured by that political economy and cultrure of that society. Idi Amine Dada is a direct refelaction of the people of Uganda so is all Ethiopian leaders born out of the people of Ethiopia. If Mengestu don't listen other peoples advice that is the character of Ethiopians, if Meles is suspicious that is the character of Ethiopians, so is H/Selessie the proud man who is a microcosmic reperesantation of the empty pride of his people. Do you think leaders of Ethiopia are comeing from another planet?

HABESHA YOU ARE BORN IN OPPOSIATION GROWUP IN OPPOSIATION AND WILL DIE IN OPPOSIATION OF GOVERNMENT. OPPOSIATION AND ANARCHY IS YOUR CULTRURE WITHOUT REGARD OF THE TYPE OF GOVERNMENT. YOU CAN CHANGE THAT BY MAKING A DECISION NOW TO SUPPORT THE GOVERNMENT IN ITS ENDEAVOUR TO BRING CHANGE. THAT WILL CHANGE HISTORY NOT ONLY A HISTORY OF FAMINE BUT ALSO THE LONG STANDING HISTORY OF ANARCHY AND REBELLION.

We have never address our as a citizen of that country .for that matter I am working on the project how to build a houses on rural area by using minimal amount of wood. Since deforestation is one of the cause of the problem. The other thinks me and my friends are working hoe to create gas from the dunk of their cattle’s on house-holed level. I believe that it has to start from each individual household. Then from each “ kebele” village then it goes on. Don’t forget I did not deny good management and transparency are factures. Extraterrestrial,

Your comment doesn't make sense at all. You are telling us the gov't in power at any time is the reflection of the majority, if not all, of the society. You are 100% wrong here. Tell me Haile-Sellassie and all feudal arstocrats before him live and think as the majority (99%) of the poor they were sucking!!! Tell me the military-minded Mengistu lived and thought as on of the farmers in rural areas (85% of the population)!! Tell me Haile-Sellassie's "empty" pride you mentioned is that of a farmer in Tigray, Showa, Sidamo, etc.!!! Tell me MELES'S hatred toward Ethiopia and Ethiopians is the midset of the 99% or more of other Ethiopians!!! You need to come to your senses and broaden your outlook instead of fighting for your failed midget out here. If you hate the discussion out here and do not appreciate a different poit of view than yours, you shouldn't come to the post at all. You have better choices at Aiga forum.

The issue here is not about supporting gov't in crisis, who never cared for its own citizen, but, to overcome the cycle of hunger in longer term as we are blessed with fertile and abundant rivers. The gov't is playing more of a politics with land allocation and use with the poor farmers, for votes, than guiding them to improve their difficult situation. Your problem is for us to keep Meles for long at any cost. I am not going to say bad words to you, but alt least share my opinion.
You know why the diaspora is more arguing against Meles and its tribal policy? The reason is they (many of them) are highly educated and left the country due to rotten gov't policy of the dergue and Woyanne. Tell me if I am wrong here: Over 75% of those sent overseas for higher training will not come back to Ethiopia. Almost all highly skilled doctors and engineeers are abroad than in Ethiopia. Why is that? Is diaspora always stupid, hater, taxi driver or parking lot attendant? MAY BE WHO YOU CAN ASSOCIATE WITH ARE ONLY THOSE ONES. No body at higher skill and brain level will even dare to have any discussion with you. I think Nazret.com is doing you a favour, otherwise you could have been so lonely!!!!

Deboka,

I was not trying to criticize you, but I wanted to get at least one solution from you and you provided that. I appreciate that and wish you success!!! For your information, my training is in agriculture and the issue of deforestation is going to increase as we don't have a clear land policy where true ownership of land is a must to circumvent the problem. If you don't own one thing and there is no real or customary law to govern you to not to use or steal it, then you are not going to see any left over of that thing sooner.

Do you think opposing a gov't after giving them ample time to demonstrate their intent and capability is wrong? Why did Woyanne opposed to Dergue and fought to overthrow it? Why did Ethiopians (farmers, students, taxi drivers, the military, etc.) opposed to Haile-Sellasie and finally overthrew him and the institution he was in charge? It is not just to be an opposition for a habit, but they failed to administer capably after being given many years to do so. The same is for Woyanne: they are given 18 years to show some lasting fruits and failed. How long do you think they should stay on power with no oppsition to them? If all this problems showed up in the forst 5 years of their rule, you may say we are born to complain. You are telling me to shut up forever even bad things are seen on the ground? Disagreeing reasonably will be a good counter check of abusing responsibility the leaders shoulder once they are in power.

Famine is a recurring problem in Ethiopia. 120 years ago just before the Battle of Adwa, Ethiopia faced the worst famine on record. Some historians have written that a third of the population died (5 out of 15 million). It lasted for three years, and the main reason was not drought or lack of rain, but that ninty plus percent of the domestic animals died. There has been allegations that the Italians spread some poison thru the herds, in order to weaken the nation before their impending invasion. Nevertheless, Ethiiopians stood together and beat both the famine and the invaders. There is a lesson why I brought this up. My fellow Ethiopians, do not call each other ethnic names. Do not blame past leaders. There files are closed, they dealt with what they faced, with the tools available for them. Some like the last Emperor tried to hide famine, in order to keep their international reputation in tact. Others like Derg, used it for advancing their scroched Earth policies to wage war. Yet others like MALLT, used it to collect funds, and get symphaty from outsiders for the cause they were fighting for. But as the cat said,"shi betaleb enae be gelae", in the end the loosers are the Ethiopian ordinary citizens. Let us all stop the blame game and try, to first bring to power an all inclusive wise leadership, and then find a final and binding solution for this scourge that has afflicited our people for so long.

Awei enanaria ene wef zerere
Hulum tebelana hulum telamette
Atsefaris kerre endanferattette.

circa 1889, sang for the great famine.
It shows all wild plants were eaten save
atsefaris, which was poisonous.

"Disagreeing reasonably will be a good counter check of abusing responsibility the leaders shoulder once they are in power."

What the diaspora world doing is not "Disagreeing reasonably" but demonizing unreasonably. Portraying Meles and his government as evil and denying the achivements of the government is not true or healthy or helpful. That is also not what Ethiopia needs, What Ethiopia needs is to work and support the government and bring an evolutionary change not preaching a revolution against the government. I think we have a wrong way of understanding patriotism by linking it with rebillion and opposiation and this is very true of the diaspora world that belongs to the old paradigem of politics which is a revolution.

I also don't think the diaspora world have the legal or moral ground to speak so mcuh of the Ethiopian government while enjoying the material wealth of the west. I don't understand this long distance patriotism that perpetuate conflict and division. To me this endliess cyber noice of the diaspora world is neither petriotism nor politics but it is more of a question to be answered through antropolological and psychological question, the question of forming an Ethiopian identity and community that exist electronically as far as the Ethiopian diaspora is concerned.

You have said it unconsciously the true motive of the diaspora noice on the cyber world when you say "I think Nazret.com is doing you a favour, otherwise you could have been so lonely!!!!", this is not about me but about many of you living in the west crying here at nazret.com for your own self. I consider the time i am spending on this site as a west of time, sometimes feeling rules me, the annoying feeling i have from the diaspora cry pulls me back to this site to show my disagreement but soon very soon i will overcome this anger on the Ethiopian diaspora and will abunden this site once for all to do more productive things.

By the way the honerable diaspora why you are discussing with me while you have "higher skill and brain level"? This is another typical characterstic of diaspora, they love to minimize others and talk about brain level, saying you have this type of brain or this amount of brain, does this have anything to do with being westernized or civilized?

I am smoetimes not sure if you people are Ethiopian, if you are an Ethiopian how come you don't know that the main obstacle for development in Ethiopia is the luck of financial capital. what we mean by famine in Ethiopia is not only the filure of crops in the farm but also the luck of purchesing power of the farmer and also the luck of purchesing power of the government to intervene. How come you compare Saudi Arabia with Ethiopia? Saudi Arabia is not and will never be self suffisient in food, that is why they are trying to locate their farming industry in the developing world not because they have anything but money to buy the land, skilled/unskilled labour and technology. Saudi Arabia have an import of up to six billion dollar food market annually that explains why there is no famine in the country and it is not because they farm the food but they have the money to buy food. Any comparsion of Ethiopia with the oil rich nations is just crazy Ethiopia have to borrow money for every move she make towards development and borrwing doesn't come overnight and at will.

Don't talk too much about tribe, tribe is the most important political, economic and social organization for Africans, what will be bad to triablism is if there is tribal stratification but thanks to the Ethiopian government and we have federalism. Don't speak about Africa with an American mentality, don't also compare Ethiopia with a rich Arab nations, come down and level yourself with the reality of Africa today. After all who are you to critisize while sitteing in the west?

You asked many question but can i also ask you why is that the Ethiopian diaspora don't contribute to famine or development while it pretend to be 'hager wedade'?

Come down diaspora, come close to the government and bring change from with in not by critisizng those striving to being change by "long distance nationalsim".

Today is the day that I am ashamed to be ETHIOPIAN. Shame on us as people who own the most fertile land in Africa and still we can not feed our people. It has been almost half a century since we started begging the world for food. Once some one in the US asked me where I am from and when I told him that I am from Ethiopia he said " I was so sad to see people dying from starvation in your country in 84"
How much resource are we spending on the boarder with Eritrea over a small dusty town of Badme. Go ahead and finish demarcation as you agreed in the Algers treaty and allocate the resource in making dams, modern farming and irrigation.

Extraterrestrial,

You are still a very cnfused and self-absorbed man/woman. I am not describing myself to you as one with "higher skill and brain level" compared to you or any individual by name. However, I read many posts by people who are fighting for this midget Meles, day and night, calling those opposing to him as parking lot attendants, taxi-drivers, haters, etc. Check posts by Yeha, Lekim, you and the likes. Eventhough there are a lot of DV arrivals in recent years who may not have higher educational training, many of earlier and some of recent arrivals are of the highest caliber. No question about that. I am not one of those with high caliber and if I were one, I will be so busy and I couldn't have the time to conversate with you often on this forum.
Those living in the west could not go hungry because Meles is starving Ethiopians he hates. Food is the cheapest thing in the west and is so plenty. However, many, including myself, are the ones paying for food for our families in Ethiopia from our earnings in the west, not the Meles regime. We are helping our poor families as much as we can. In addition, many of us are not cyber warriors as we have frequent contacts with families in Ethiopia who share their agony with us. Despite poor telecommunication service record, many ethiopians are getting access to families abroad.

You also complain Meles is demonized unreasonably. I don't believe that and he chose to be in that spot. There are/were other competent individuals in his circle and outside, but chose and dictated to stay in that position for two decades. The situation on the ground is getting worse by the day, rationed electricity, food shortage, lack of basic goods and construction material, etc., as all his cronies are hunting down for loots than building a nation. How long should one wait? Give me the answer please?

Extraterrestrial,

You wrote: "we are all waiting for that change until it comes". What do you mean excactly? Do you also want the woyannes gone sooner? Or you want to see the real and practical struggle on the ground against woyanne and you are going to fight along Woyanne's side? Make your opinion clear. I do not think that you mean the demise of woyanne as soon as possible. Please respond clearly!!!!!!

I mean by waiting is the change to the Ethiopian poor, the electiric from the generaters, the irrigation from the dams, the benefit of modern market from ECEX, the realization of living with dignity from the federal system, the enjoyment of civil and political rights as well as the smooth change of government from the democratic system and ALL OF THIS NEED TIME and that is why i said we are all waiting, i believe Meles himself is waiting.

If you ask me personally i will never do anything political beyond writing/commenting in particularly of Ethiopian politics which i think is a monkey business, i both sympathise/admire Meles for having to deal with this complicated people, people who are ruled by political gossip and feelings, i am more of changing myself, my family and my environment than changing government.

DON'T YOU THINK WE HAVE TRIED ALL THE TOP TO BOTTOM CHANGE AND FAILED AND WE SHOULD TRY THE BOTTOM TO TOP CHANGE. IT IS US NEED TO CHANGE AND THEN ETHIOPIA WILL CHANGE BECAUE FOR ME I AM OF THE OPINION THAT EVEN IF CHRIST COMES DOWN TO RULE ETHIOPIA THERE WILL BE CANDLE LIGHT AND MASS PROTEST IN LONDON AND WASHINGTON DC.

Finally there will never be any thing like fighting against or with in Ethiopia all this cry is of a cyber world, it is a noice of a die hard old politicians with an expired political ideology living in a dream world. To me the Ethiopian diaspora is a constant reminder of what happen after the French Revolution and how the French elite and remnants of the monarchy was living in a dream world of reversing the revolution. It is a fact that any diaspora of any country is a prisoner of the past and lives in that past of his country.

What you have said is,any true Ethiopian should believe in.unfortunatly there are so many pretantious people who try to blend in eventhough they have nothing to do with Ethiopia.like eselem who is a shabia but vomit on every topic as a concerned citizen.
I admire zxamiche who comes in a real belief in his own idea and with no hidden agenda.
Do not be surprised if you hear people with a desparaging comment against Ethiopia while themselves claiming being Ethiopians.
