New AU conference center takes shape in Ethiopian capital

APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia)
Being built on an area of around 11.3 hectares inside the headquarters of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), the new AU Conference Centre is taking shape, the special correspondent of APA noted on the sidelines of the ongoing 14th Africa Union (AU) summit.

The continuous roar of bull-dozers and other machinery clearing the rough ground, and the constant comings and goings of Chinese and Ethiopian workers on this building site give enough information on the progress of the infrastructure which work started in January 2009, and should be completed by December 2011.

The current premises housing the annual AU meetings were built in the 1960s at the beginning of the creation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), predecessor of the AU. It is mainly characterized by its smallness and its inconvenience.

Fruit of the China-Africa Cooperation, the new AU conference centre will particularly house the annual conferences of the Pan-African organisation.

For lack of adequate infrastructure, the AU Commission uses the premises of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) for the purposes of the Union’s annual heads of state and government summit.

The AU Conference Centre under construction is a “gift” from China, AU Commission deputy Chairperson Erastus Mwencha said, adding that the infrastructure has already cost over US$130 million to China.

“China is a partner of Africa and wishes, through this project, to leave its mark on the continent,” Mwencha said, stating that this project is undoubtedly the “symbol of the China -Africa friendship.”

The future AU conference centre includes a 23-storey building that can accommodate more than 500 offices, a 2,000-seat auditorium, a 500-seat conference room and offices for the AU Commission staff.

A five star hotel will also be built, nearby the conference centre, to accommodate the heads of state and government and other guests for the yearly meetings.

The Sino-African cooperation is materialized by the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

The last Forum held in November 2009 at Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt) gave Beijing the opportunity to announce that it put US$ 10 billion as unsecured loans at the disposal of African countries over a three-year period.

So the 53 countries in Africa could not each donate $2.5 million for the facilites, yet each African head of state loots and stashes at least ten time this amount in foreign bank accounts every month!

Knowing the Chinese this "$10 Billion in unsecured loans" really means they will get a lisence rape and pillage Africa through the back door for over $100 Billion in Minerals Oil etc and our dear "Dumb Ass" leaders will be only to happy to drop ther pants bend over and take it up the :censored: without vaseline 88| 88|

This is a new crack of dawn for the neglechted African Continent.

We knew from the beginning that the story of sino-African relation is a different one.
China blieves earnestly that the so called "dark continent" belongs very well to the normal humnan civilization.

The other world powers who also had the means and capacity to genuinly cooperate and make difference did see it in a very different angle.
They wanted to keep the continent as a place of exotic wild life attraction zoo (Buffalos, zebras,...)and raw raterial-sucking pit.
Excessive expired edible stuffs also take their final destination to African.

We believe the chinise approach can genuinely contribute to viable integration of Africa in to the rest of modern world.

We treasure the chinese genuine brotherliness.
The era of colonial type "EXCLUSION POLICY" shall gradually be over .

Africa is coming !

Good stuff. I just hope they make sure to troughly check the interior before using it. It is a fact that Embassies and other sensetive buildings are screened for microphones.//

In my humble opinion the China-Africa cooperation is not a zero-sum-game, it is a win win proposition. The construction of sky scrapers, roads and bridges and dams and hydro power generators is not only necessary for economic development in education, health, agriculture, manufacturing and service industries but it has other external benefits such as the experience the will be transferred to engineers, architects, technicians that in turn could be passed from generation to generation.

So many belive that the little conrete bush bloseming in Addis is a sign of a huge development leap. Slow down with the wish full thinking ppl. What is the proportion of infrustructure development per capit nation wide compared to the unplaned concrete ammasing in and around Addis Ababa. I am not denying that work has and is being done in other parts of the country, but we should still focus on infrustructre building more than the empty shining concrete in the capital city built around narrow streets with inadequate sewage line and services.
