Ethiopia - Terrorist Group ONLF massacred 74 in Ogaden, Ethiopia

Ethiopia - Following is the full text of the statement issued by the Ministry of Information Ethiopia on the latest terrorist attacks:

Terrorist Group ONLF massacred 74 in Ogaden, Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Anti-peace elements have massacred 65 civilian Ethiopians and 9 Chinese citizens in a terror ambush

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Meles Zenawi spoke during a news conference in Addis Ababa Tuesday.
Andrew Heavens/Reuters

Around 5:00 A.M. yesterday (Monday April 23), the forces of terror ambushed the employees of a Chinese Company exploring petroleum at Abule area in Degehabur zone, Eastern Ethiopia, to have indiscriminately massacred 65 Ethiopians and 9 Chinese citizens, all innocent civilian victims of the attacks that befell a whole camp that was about to wake up for the day’s work. They have also kidnapped Chinese and Ethiopian civilians – seven in all. Members of the National Defense Forces who were on the look out at the area in their few numbers have also been victimized by the heinous terror ambush.

Join the Conversation

The perpetrator of the terrorist attack on the Chinese and Ethiopian workers at the petroleum exploration and development project site is the self-styled Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), a terrorist wing which is part of the front of destruction led by the Eritrean Government. This massacre of our innocent civilian citizens and Chinese development workers is an ambush of cowardice similar in its terrorist motive to that perpetrated earlier on at an area in the northeastern part of our country. This latest terrorist attacks is much more horrendous, however, than the preceding act of terrorism.

This massacre is a brainchild of those losers who, in their envy of the large-scale development activities underway in Ethiopia, are desperately bent on discouraging the flow of Foreign Direct Investment into our country, and, if they could, they would rather bring our development to a standstill. Hand-in-glove with the Eritrean Government, which hates to see Ethiopia’s development, the terrorist forces in the region have acted out this horrendous act of terror in their grudge of the development advances being gained in the Somali Regional State and the popular gains thereof.

Ethiopia has been victim of repeated, covert terror attacks. The acts of terror targeting the country have been worsening since the time the Eritrean Government, a member of the United Nations, has delved into being the leader and coordinator of terrorism being unleashed in the sub-region. The United Nations has not been seen to take the measure it is required on its member, the Eritrean Government, which has gone astray. The least the UN ought to have done to stop this rogue government from its moves of destruction was censure. Thus emboldened, the Sha’ebia-led terrorists in our region, have once again repeated their routine acts of terror on the innocent civilian Ethiopians and the Chinese citizens too far away from home in their civilian line of duty.

Our development endeavors will not be stopped by such acts of terror being masterminded by the Eritrean government and perpetrated by its cliques. In spite of such attempts of evil to detract the country’s development path, our successful struggle against poverty will continue unperturbed, and the perpetrators of such a heinous act of terror will not go unpunished. Our defense forces will sooner track down on and bring to justice those involved in massacring our citizens and the Chinese.

The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is greatly distressed by this horrendous massacre of the Ethiopian and Chinese innocent victims. The Government of Ethiopia would like to express its empathy with the families affected by the indiscriminate massacre and to the friendly people of China. Condolences to the beareved!

This is terrible news. ONLF should try to do things in a more constructive fashion. The government has 300,000 troops and they will never beat them. I think they have made things much worse for themselves in killing innicent people. The oil there should be mostly used for the people of Ogaden but the idea that companies have to negotioate with OLNF is rediculous. Liberation fronts will not give anyone freedom, but a new tyrant. I dont get the ONLF, both ethiopia and Somali suck. its not like somalia is so great. This is also a big blow to any forign investment in the area. so in the end the ONLF will make life harde on its own people and help Eritrea to keep ethiopia from developing. shouldnt eritreas support of these groups be reported to the UN as a declaration of war. Ethiopia should sign that border ruling that way shebia does not have an excuse for its tactics. what can you do. its AFRICA.

ONLF will not bring freedom but poverty to ogaden

It is obvious Sha'ebia is behind this terrorist act. As long as Sh'ebia is in power, it will remain to be a challenge for Ethiopia's development endevours. Time to take care of the real enemy. In fact, it has been long overdue.

send some kind of message to issayas. It should not have to be an all out war. Everytime he indulges himself in such activities, make him pay instantly. Bomb some important infrastructure that is vital. The next time, he will think twice. If he has been smacked back when he kidnapped tourists and ethiopians in Afar region, he would not have dared do or encouraged this act. I don't think woyanes know strategy. Now Shaabia is calling the shots; that's a shame.

You guys must be really brain-dead to always blame Eritrea. It’s always Eritrea did this Eritrea did that. Eritrea kidnaps Ethiopians. Eritrea sends 2000 troops to Somalia. Eritrea trains Ethiopian rebels. Eritrea arms Somali terrorists (yea, Somalis are being terrorized, raped and massacred by Woyanes yet Somalis/Eritreans are the terrorist)?

Is it an Ethiopian thing to always blame and not be responsible for one’s own failures? It’s little wonder a country with “2000 year history” appears to also be 2000 years behind!

No wonder the Eritrean PR person named Ali said that if earthquake strikes Ethiopia then Eritrea would be blamed for causing it. I’m sure Eritreans have stopped watching comedy movies and shows anymore. Who needs it when Ethiopia keeps entertaining Eritreans (during their breaks from their FOCUSED National Development Campaigns)!!

STOP being paranoid.

I think Eritrea's campaign to get Ethiopia encircled looks like bearing fruit. In the process, they are now re-inforcing their terrorist image daily. Are they aiming to induce Ethiopian invasion? They could be thinking that its easier defeating Ethiopian Army in their own land than attacking outright, so the constant outrage to provoke reaction. Or they may have concluded that they might as well throw in anything they got, since by waiting 3-5 more years, Ethiopia is unstoppable. I think on both count, its better to ignor their provocaion. I am however surprised by the level of confrontations against USA. What makes them this bold? Could it be that they are helping Israel in Darfur? Some thing is making them bold. the Jewish press is stealthly justifying their purpose and vilifying ethiopia.

Yes, all these tragedy are the commulative results of the weakness of the Ethiopian Government which failed to un-root the main thorn of East Africa-Shabia. Rather, the Ethiopian government and its blind supporters are so busy in talking proudly about their adventour in imprisoning old Kinjit leaders in Kaliti. On the other hand, Shabia is doing his assignment day and night and left no stone to destabilize Ethiopia.

He should have decreased the palace guard and should have built a watch tower with all the safety and security necessary. I thought Meles is a very wise and perceptive person. He should have anticipated this will be a major target, to all the enemies of Ethiopia. Even Hailu Shaul could have seen this one coming and would not have been found his pants down. It is a day of celebration to the CUD traitors in and outside the country and all the terrorist groups. They all must be toasting the blood of Ethiopia at their banquet in Asmara their capital city where they congregate. They would not mind if all of Ethiopia is dug deep by a falling asteroid save Kaliti Hotel. They rather loose all the Ethiopian people than see them unshackled.

A government who counts everything in profit and loss like a gurage shop keeper will be caught with its pants down. The defense budget of Ethiopia has been neglected and no body is scared of old Migs who are short in spare parts and doomed harmless. Instead of subsidizing food in Addis modernizing the military should be the priority. The poor of Addis Ababa should be sent back to the land which has a good rate of return than any government job. They could eat better themselves and extra production will ease the inflation. The delapidated houses in Addis should be condemend, and the population must be managable. Construction of houses virtically than horizontally saves a lot of money to provide services cheaply. it is a blessing in disguise after all Addis Ababa is CUD and disease breading ground.

To Prime Minister Meles Zenawi: I would expect you to act expediciously on this herendous act of terrorism, impossed on our country, by making Eritrea and it's terrorist leaders directly responsible. From a diplomatic front, I have no doubet in my mind that, Egypt, Lybia, and the Saudis are behained this protracted act of sabotaging of Ethiopias economical advancement and therefore, I would expect you to act accordingly and expel the ambassadors of Egypt, Lybia and Saudis. Egypt, Lybia and Saudis has spying rings for years, specially in our capital city, Harar, and Dredawa. Not only to attack us, but to spread Islamic WEHABISSM (Isslamic Fascissim) to distabilize our country and eventualy fructure the very fiber of our socity. My God bless our beloved country Ethiopia and the people.

What is going on with the ethiopian gov? Any time there is a problem, it became fashionable to blame eritrea. This is a huge paranoia and most likely pr excercise and a cover up for its failer. I feel sorry for my country. When you're governed by a retarded leaders, you will end up creating mess every where including in ethiopia. Indeed ethiopia is going backward 3000 years!!!

It is time for Ethiopian government to get their act together and make a wise decision against an evil act of terror led by tyranny, Eritrean gov. In my view Ethiopian gov should get together w/Eritrean possible transitional Gov to come up with comprehensive plan and wipe tyranny leader out completely and replace him with more open and brave leaders. Ethiopian must not have a turn back until the mission is completed. This is the one and only option and solution which can bring peace and prosperity for two countries. Eritrean gov, in his wish and desire, wants to bring Ethiopia down from day 1. This is unacceptable and barbaric behavior and it needs to stop now.

There is no as such legitmate Ethiopian government. The power that be is a conglamoration of thugs who asserted power by way of jerry mandering the vote. They are there by killing thousands of Ethiopians.i Think the ministry of disinformation would have not issued this statment if the victms would have been only Ethiopian nationals.Because by its very nature Woyane has no the slightest sympathy and compassion for Ethiopians.so the statment is simply ,as it had been said ,is a pretext to wage war with Isayas for two underline reasons.1/ use the war to divert the attention of the people .2/take advantage of the war to decimate as many Amhara and Oromo soldiers.
