Orthodox Epiphany fills streets of Ethiopia capital

By Emmanuel Goujon

A sea of faithful resplendently dressed in white have filled the streets of the Ethiopian capital to celebrate the annual Epiphany, or the baptism of Jesus Christ.

Jubilant crowds from Addis Ababa's 13 Orthodox Churches descended on city streets for the religious ritual, locally known as "Timkat", marked on the 11th day of the fifth month in accordance with the Orthodox calender.

Making prayer pit-stops, the procession walked behind replicas of tablets of the Biblical Ten Commandments, removed once a year during the festival from the Ark of the Covenant -- the vessel in which the Commandments are believed to have been held and which the Orthodox church here maintains is located in Ethiopia.

Children, adorned in the national red, orange and green colours, walked alongside white-veiled adults as they belted out hymns and beat drums. The priests from the hexagonal churches and the monks and nuns wore their most ornate robes and habits.

"The message is, this is the feast of our faith, the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ is for our own sake," said Abuna Paulos, the patriarch of the country's 35,000 Orthodox churches.

"When we speak about religion or about Christianity, we are speaking about peace," he told AFP.

Second only to Christmas in religious importance to Ethiopians, the festival attracts hundreds of thousands of faithful and tourists to Addis Ababa and is capped by a water drenching session to symbolise the baptism of Jesus Christ.

Directory of Ethiopian Churches and Mosques from nazret.com directory

A year ago in Addis Ababa from Addis Ferenji Blog Archives

According to the church's lore, Ethiopia's first emperor Menelik I took the Ark of the Covenant from Jews in Jerusalem because they had lost faith and were no longer observing God's commandments handed down to Moses on Mount Sinai.

Menelik I, the founder of the Ethiopian empire, is traditionally believed to be the son of the Biblical King Solomon and Queen Sheba.

He is said to have brought the Ark of the Covenant to Ethiopia after the destruction of Solomon's Temple and according to that legend, the Ark should be preciously conserved in the Axoum church north of the country.

At the festival, the tablets from the 13 Addis Ababa churches are placed in the middle of the crowd, which holds night-long prayers before the symbolic baptism.

The faithful seek out blessings from the priests, prostating themselves before crosses as women touch the grounds trodden by Abuna and touch their childrens' foreheads as a symbol of blessing to their offspring.

At dawn of the following day, Abuna plunges a giant cross in water to bless the crowd and later spray pipes are turned on to shower the swollen crowd of believers, the most faithful of whom will remain fully dressed for the dowsing.

Dear all,

It is great to know that "Jubilant crowds descended on city streets for the religious ritual,"

YES - “there is a time to sow, and there is a time to reap, there is a time to mourn, and there's a time to celebrate.”

Besides this religious celebrations, it is also a time of commitment and engagement all sphere of life.

Happy Timket to you all.

Even in this great day, the only thing you can say is where are CUD supporters?
Even Meles's mouth peace, Zena, is holding back.

BTW, 1/2 CUD supporters are drinking coffee in Mogadisho, thanks to King Melese. Once you get Asseb, the other half will fall in line.

Zita and Yirgacheffee,

Both of you are pro-hate and confusion. Hate is a cancer for any society and it kills slowly the fabric of unity and destroys. It is against our unity, Ethiopians.

Please stop, this is not helping our country and people in any way.
Out of hate only the extremist benefit, like Meles and his co. and other who want to destroy the whole population that speaks Tigregna.

Do you know how many Tigreans are killed by Meles and TPLF before they come to power (Menelik palace)? You have no idea all the disappearance, killing, blackmailing was/is refined on Tigreans before it was exported to the rest of Ethiopia.
To hate each other will only benefit Meles & his followers.

The moral value of a nation

We are brothers and sisters ,fathers and mothers, sons and daughters. We grew up together we went to school together we read from the same book we prayed for the same God .When it comes to moral values right and wrong we stand at different side. You have your own right I have my own right you have your own wrong i have my own wrong.I see things diffrently you see things differently. We fight and we argue all the time but we are not coming to same moral value. Am I right ? Are you worng ? ,Am I worng ?Are you right? Are we both wrong? or Are we both right ? Who will tell us to the truth ? who will lead us to the right ? Do we have to go to our priest ?Do we have to go to our Imam Do we have to go to our pasture do we have to go to our pope.

Timket, one of the great Holidays in Etiopia and a memorable one. Growing up in Addis, waiting for the Tabot to walk passed us around Arat Kilos howelte, was a fun time. While waiting for the Tabot, I remember looking at people running around holding our flags, smiling, laughing, thanking God for creating us as Ethiopians. You could see the girma mogas on everyone’s face despite their economic status in Addis. Even our Muslim friends used to join us just to have fun and to check out beautiful Ethiopian girls wearing abesha clothes, that covered all their body but one can see their beauty underneath. I still think Ethiopian women are the most beautiful creation of Egziabhere, no one comes close. Ok, maybe Somalian women.

Although the Muslim friends used to tease us about the value and significance of a Tabot and the priest carrying it, there was an unspoken respect between us about our respective religions and never crossed that line. I am glad to see my people still enjoy this blessed day despite the hardship they face everyday.

God bless all Ethiopians.

You are quite right in what you say. Some people have lost any sense of propriety. Of course, Islam is just as good as any religion and for many the best. This deserves respect not the kind of foolish things some people say in their exclusive political fervour not unlike madness. Forgive them, for they know not what they say.

Thank you man you have raised a good point. yes we are the same nation with different ideas and believes but we always fail to narrow our differences that affects us all and prefer to go apart with dissatisfaction. Every one feel perfect in his own term with out realizing how some ones perfection is harmful to the others. Therefore, Tessema we do not need to go any where but to ask ourselves until we realize that the trust and compromise are the only way that brings us very much closer to each other.

I am just running out of memories (not reasons) to be proud of being an Ethiopian. There are soooooo many memories in the past that had me thinking about what a privilege it is to be a citizen of Ethiopia. I am telling you all (not because im the most proudest Ethiopian) but because its a matter of the fact, that all should go and visit the diversity of the gorgeous nation and people. Ethipoia was the country that (even) Prophet Mohammad of the religion of Islam guided his people to. In order for them to get peace and acceptance at the early stage of the religion. To this date, there's no country that has its name appear in the book of not only Christians, but also Islams and Jews (referring to the many many Ethiopian Jews having fled to Israel in the past). I don't want to keep going on and on about many other reasons about the nation of Ethiopia. It is honestly a matter of fact and not of perspective or bias. May God continue to bless the divine nation of Ethiopia and i hope people will get to read this perspective of mine without any misunderstanding.

To all Ethiopians and others who are holidaying this very festive day!

Letimket Yalhone Kemis Yibetates endilu, Enjoy this unique Ethiopian Celebration of Tradition, Vibrant Culture and Newty!

If it appeals to you, here is my chunk of craze for the day:

Dip your self (head) deep into the Water!
Ignore the clandenstine but feel the summit!
Rinse yourself with Palm Olive! Wash!
Brag your latrine, pick your best and dress up - your Tibeb embroidered shirt must suit you well!
Smile and stay optimial to meet and/or to newlywed your future Balebet!(If you are over 50 and wed, then espouse with fresh /non matrimonial/ idea, come next season! Think Novelty in social, intellectual and political terms!) i need the stabilizing factor in you!

Wagging a long straight stick is a top secret while dancing to attract the female. Besides flinging the spirals of the national flag back and forth, one is impressed by the blends of the Trois-Couleurs on Timkat day. Green-Yellow-Red. Rred wreath, (olive ear, palm leave, etc)being a luck scion stucked on top is heart breaking. So partying is ideal a game and mesmerizing an experience inside a populace where fainting wo/men are not few while taking their courses on Eskista on the field.

Happy Epiphany!
All the best to friends [and foes (we don't argue today right?)] and the Ethiopian big family!!

I have read in one article Ethiopian Muslims are fifty percent of the population. However, these Muslims if they are twenty five percent of them are Christians who celebrates all Christian festivals in Ethiopia. These Christians are caused them to be called Muslims for financial gain, the sake of survival. A lot of Muslim Countries and associations are trying to convert the country Ethiopia as a Muslim nation. They spill millions of dollars every year to take over the government, so far does not occur because the true followers of the Muslim religion are about twenty percent of the Ethiopian population. These twenty percent Muslims are accept Ethiopian as a Christian nation the same like Christians in Jordan accept Jordan is a Muslim nation. So, fundamentals (akirari moslims) are less than five percent. They are the one who pretends and talks that Muslims in Ethiopia have greater number than Christians. Ethiopia is a Christian nation not a Muslim. These should not come to someone’s mind that Ethiopia is a Muslim nation unless he is fundamentalist or akirari. From my experience, when I was in Ethiopia both religions celebrate holidays together.

God Bless Ethiopian Muslims.
God Bless Ethiopian Christians.
