Pop star Teddy Afro freed from jail in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia's most popular singer, Teddy Afro, was freed early from prison on Thursday after serving 18 months of a two-year sentence for hit-and-run manslaughter.

The performer, whose real name is Tewodros Kassahun, was found guilty of killing an 18-year-old homeless man while driving his BMW in the capital Addis Ababa in 2007.

Lawyers said he was freed early because of good behavior.

It is pleasant to hear this in many levels. Kudos to the Ethiopian Justice System for being able to convict and prosecute an artist as big as Teddy. Kudos again for not being bogged down on the politics of it.

If Ethiopian (regardless of race, fame or fortune) could respect the law of the land (common sense for that matter) progress would be attainable. For this, the role played by the justice system is undeniable.

It takes guts and courage to free a vocal opponent of the ruling government after serving time decided by the court.

I am happy for you Teddy. Hope you would leave this behind you and serve the people with your artistic ability. Hope you would be a vocal advocate of the injustice and oppression. Hope this will not deter you from doing what you used to don best. (no more drinking and driving I hope)

It is my hope and dream that the government educate itself from cases like this and separate politics from civil service. teddy's willingness to live up to the court decision and serve his time is a lessen for the government and other Ethiopians in general.

Once again kudos to Teddy and the Justice system

Woyane is number one enemy of the people.However , I do think that Teddy has really killed that poor guy.Cuz in that day, his BMW was found in the ditch which actually shows he was actually driving drunk.
