Somalis 'jubilant' at news of cease-fire agreement

By Paul Salopek | Tribune correspondent

June 11, 2008

JOHANNESBURG
— A surprise cease-fire agreement between Somalia's central government and the armed opposition was greeted with more rocket and machine-gun fire in the capital of Mogadishu on Tuesday even as the residents of that beleaguered city hoped that the deal might at last bring stability to Africa's most war-devastated nation.

"The people are very jubilant," Mogadishu schoolteacher Abdisirack Noriftin said by phone from the bullet-scarred capital. "Many, many people have been calling local radio stations, wishing that this will bring back a decent life."

Hope and Doubt Greet Peace Deal in Somalia

By JEFFREY GETTLEMAN

Published: June 11, 2008

New York Times

NAIROBI, Kenya
— Peace is no small feat in Somalia, and if the reaction to the accord struck on Monday night is any gauge, peace may still be a long way off.

On Tuesday, militant Islamist leaders immediately rejected the deal, which had been signed by moderate Islamists and the beleaguered transitional government of Somalia.

“The so-called deal is rubbish and inconsequential,” Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys, a strident Islamist leader, told The Associated Press. “It will not in any way result in peace.”

Another drama from the US, its agent the UN, and its slave the Woyane militias. Its very clear the resistance army is winning every battle. 80% of Southern Somalia is under the resistance and the coward Woyane militia only hide in few buildings. This deal is meant to divide the resistance and give the Woyane militia a breathing space. The weak Woyane thugs are close to defeat and this deal means giving Woyane a grace and not humiliating exit of Somalia. We Somali reject that. We dont' a single Woyane coming back to Ethiopia alive to kill more innocent Ethiopians. We reject this deal.

Another American invention to weaken the resistance I must say. The Somali are smart and will confront this dark evil hand that wants to divide them.

It will be sad for TPLF if there is peace agreement in Somalia. Where are they going to deploy their solders? If solders are sitting ideal it is dangerous for TPLF. They may raise political question. Also war and corruption goes together, how cadres steal if there is no war.

If they are out Somalia, definitely they will start war with Eritrea to make their manpower busy, to avoid political question and corruption to continue.

I'm not Somali but an Ethiopian but even I can see the stupidity of this.

What this "peace deal" does is effectively say that the invasion and occupation of Somalia by Ethiopia was right. The worst part is that the Ethiopian forces won't leave somalia until there is peace for 3 months and UN peacekeepers come to Somalia.

That will never happen. 8,000 AU forces were pledged and only 2,000 bothered to show up. So what makes them think that Europeans and Americans will risk the lives of their soldiers?

Another thing that gets me. Ethiopia was only meant to be in Somalia for a few weeks. When they stayed in Somalia they kept getting attacked. Ethiopian bases in Southern Somalia have been abandoned. The insurgency is just to strong. There are only three bases in Somalia based in three cities each separated hundreds of miles from each other. Each base is under constant attack by Insurgents.

The Insurgents have taken over most of Souther Somalia.

Ethiopia will not withdraw from Somalia unless the former is militarily defeated. The signs of such a defeat are already obvious in all southern Somalia and I don't think that the Abyssinian butcher has miraculous measures to reverse that slowly deteriorating situation.

My biggest concern is will the liberators be ready to listen to the Somali people?. How will they deal with Puntland and Somaliland?. Will they give peace a chance?. Or will they believe only in their guns?.

How can there be peace between ARS and TFG when the Ethiopian leader just killed and areas are liberated one day at a time, with Woyane soldiers in running, and when the military resistance is getting stronger?

I see we have two either fake Somalis or stupid ones on this blog.

If the Somalis wanted or needed peace. Meles Zenawi is never going to bring it. Look at Ethiopia. My people are starving and dying in this so "democratic" and "peaceful".

To the guy saying that the split in the Somali opposition is due to clanism. Hey guess what. Awyes and Sharif were friends and worked together several years. When both of them had no power. When they ICU took control of Southern Somalia Sharif was elected leader. Aweys didn't do anything. After the tigryan army invaded they were still together and shared the same opinion until Sharif broke the ARS constituon. No negotiation until the butcherer Meles leaves Ethiopia.

To the guy saying that if the Insurgents stopped fighting the army would leave. Two problems with that.

1: Meles will only withdraw the tigryan army if the UN come in substantial amount. Which means that his army will be there for many years.
2: This will leave the warlords, corrupted ministers and butchers in power. Somalia unlike Ethiopia has a rare chance to get rid of people who suck the life out of their country all for personal gain. If the Islamist do succeed and create a corruption free government. Then Somalia will prosper.

Our Somali brothers and sister deserve
a long waiting peace. But I doubt the
Islamist and their sponsor Eritrea will not
give peace a chance to flourish in Somalia.
Somalia need peace to bring back home
her industrious children who scattered all
over the world. If Somalia got peace there
is a good possibility the Somalis in diaspora
bring a significant economic progress in Somalia.
Peace, peace forever. No conflict with
Ethiopia or Kenya for the colonialist created
boarder. In fact the boarder between Ethiopia
and Somalia should be erased and the people
should be allowed to move as they wish between the two countries.

I was browsing around the internet. Look for what is happening in Somalia about the peace deal. It turns out that the Al-Shabab figthers just invaded Ethiopia. They just seized ferfer in the Ethiopian-Somali border.

For those who don't know ferfer is an Ethiopian Somali town.
Here is more details.
http://allafrica.com/stories/200806120400.html

All of this could have been avoided by Meles leaving Somalis to their own devices to attack each other. What if the ONLF and the Somalis unite?

It is amazing to notice once more the naive approach of UN to Somali problem. How many times we noticed a peace agreement between the bucher war lords of Somali. Yemen, Dijibuti, Kenya, Sodere, etc. None of them became practical. This will also not work. Peace is not there in the Somali mind. apparently Somali are one tribe, one language, one religion and one mentality people. More than 50% of the Somali people are born since they started killing each other. How on earth we expect the peace language from these generation. If the Ethiopian Defence force leave the country, which I strongly advocate, the Somalies will go on with their unfinished business until God knows.

As much as I wish that the violence in Somalia ends soon, I do not think the current peace agreement will hold especially since some of the significant rebel groups have not been included and anyways assuming Meles Zenawi will call off his troops from Somalia is wishful thinking. Lets face it Somalia is the only thing that makes Meles Zenawi unexpendable to the US and other western countries. If he withdraws from there who knows what they might ask of him like free and fair elections, free press, human rights etc. It is sad that the Somali and Ethiopian people have become mere pawns in the political chess game played by this brutal dictator and his croonies.
