Team Ethiopia had a magnificent Olympic in Beijing

Ranking Summary

  • 18th in the World
  • 2nd in Africa
  • 5th in Athletics

Ethiopia has just concluded the second most successful Olympic in history by medal counts. Only in Sydney, did Ethiopia win more medals. Team Ethiopia won a total of 7 medals; 4 gold medals, 1 silver and 2 bronze, finishing 18th in the world and 2nd in Africa. In Athletics, Ethiopia finished 5th in the world after United States, Russia, Jamaica and Kenya. It was only short of the record in Sydney by 1 bronze medal when Ethiopia won a record 4 gold medals, 1 Silver and 3 bronze medals in 2000 in Sydney.

Tirunesh Dibaba made history by becoming the first woman ever to win double gold in the 5000m and 10,000m in Olympics. Also Kenenisa Bekele became the second Ethiopian after Mirtus Yifter, to win double gold medals in 5000m and 10,000m, making him the first Ethiopian to win 3 gold medals in Olympic, a record for any athlete in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has also came close to winning a medal in Men's 3000m Steeplechase for the first time since 1980, when rising star Yakob Jarso finished 4th. In the Women's 3000m Steeplechase, Zemzem Ahmed broke the national record in the event finishing 7th. In the Men's marathon, Team Ethiopia has done more than many anticipated with all three team members finishing in the top 7 and Tsegaye Kebede taking the bronze medal with Deriba Merga finishing 4th and Gashaw Asfaw finishing 7th.

Ethiopia has performed poorly in the Women's Marathon where two of the runners, Gete Wami and Berhane Adere, dropping out with out finishing. Relatively Dire Tune did well, finishing in 15th place.

Another poor performance was in the Men's 1500m and Women's 1500m where no one managed to advance to the finals.

Ethiopia has sent a total of 36 athletes plus a boxer to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Boxer Getachew Molla was disqualified for not meeting the weight requirement before he even enters the ring. The team participated in both Men's and Women's 1500m, 3000m steeplechase, 5000m, 10,000m and Marathon. Ethiopia was able to sweep the gold medals in 5000m, and 10,000m confirming its supremacy in long distance running.

Overall, Beijing Olympics has been quite successful for Team Ethiopia, what do you think?

Congrats to Team Ethiopia. Good results overall. We have two absolute superstars in Terunesh and Kenenisa. I hope we will now get more depth and also diversify from the 5k and 10k races, to pose a real challenge to the Kenyans.

Dear Nazret,

The Ethiopia athletes' performance at the Bejing Olympics was impressive. Given the hot and humid weather of the City, our athletes have demonstrated not only their remarkable capacity to endure, but also their consistent skills and efforts to aim and achieve victory for our beloved motherland, Ethiopia.

I stayed up in the wee hours of the night day after day to be with our great athletes, to share repeated moments of joy and togetherness. I am deeply touched by the selfless sacrifice Haile Gebre Selassie made so that Kenenisa and Seleshi became medal winners. I am also touched when the Ethiopian athletes shared their bottles of water with the Eritrean and Kenyan athletes. They showed us the extent of possibilities and remarkable achievements we can make as peaceful competitors and neighbors. My optimism has been strengthened by the remarkable and historic achivements of the great Tirunesh Dibaba and Meseret Defar. Let us enjoy this historic and great moment of unity and pledge to uphold it at all times. Let us build stadiums and training facilities so that our youth will be able to repaet the achivements of Kenenisa and Tirunesh. I congratulate all, athletes and coaches, fans and leaders, who contributed to the victories.

Nazret.com did a very good assessment. Well done Team Ethiopia, congratulations to everybody. Our victories in 5k and 10k were historic. The progress we made in both categories of steeplechase is encouraging. We saw a very good fight from our men marathoners.
I was very sad that athlete Deriba Merga missed out of the medals; he did all the leading almost for the entire race and was courageous in his fight until the end. We look forward to see great successes from in near future. We could have won the gold if our hero Haile Gebresellasie had not made somewhat a very faulty decision. We had highly experienced and renowned athletes in the women's marathon but the outcome was very dismal. We were expecting gold from athlete Gelete Burka but hers was a disappointing underachievement given her recent world lead position in 1500m. Overall our participation in Beijing was successful.
Our recent success in Olympics shows we are getting results only from limited events. We got four Golds only from 5k and 10k, and that is extraordinary result when seen from individual achievement. But getting 4 Golds only from 5k and 10k shows our base is very thin. We need to expand our sphere of participation. The Ethiopian athletics federation needs to do a lot of work in bringing up talented young athletes especially of for shorter distances. It had promised to do that after Sydney but this has not been seen at Beijing.

I agree with you. It is quite succesful and I see much sucess in the future olympics. This years winners are sitll young, but already talented. Those who didn't make it to grab a medal are encourging young atleths. I disagree with those people who thinks that Haile did the wrong decision. Why dont they try to run themselves. I am sure Kenenisa appreciated Hile's participation in the 10, 000m.

Agazi, the lonely and betrayed Woyane from Abay Tigrai:

After the Abay Tigrawot: Yeha, Agam, Lekim, Yirgacheffee, Abune PeTros, Hammere, and other jealous looters betrayed you, you're feeling loneliness. I don't blame you.

You see, when Ethiopians started running for Gold, in 1960, Eritreans started running for the show of independence. They earned their gold in 1991, not through the silver platter of the so called, "UN" or the West brokered "Olympic committee," but through iron fist that no superpower could resist.

By the same token, you, as a Tigrian copycat, in sheer loss, began running for Tigray independence, burning Ethiopian flag as, biTash Cherk, and boasting to make Tigrai, Amhara's graveyard. After snatching power in Ethiopia, with the help of Shaebia, in good faith, you dropped the Abay Tigray ticket hence choosing to loot Ethiopia underground, for later Abay Tigrai State, hoping you would defeat Eritreans' psych and snatch its port Assab, using Ethiopian cannonfolders of Oromia, where most Olypmic winners came from, and exploiting Ethiopia's diplomatic support of the West.

Unfortunately, you became neither Abay Tigrawai nor Ethiopiawi, neither Eritreans' friend nor Ethiopians' lifetime partner. Now, you're trying to spell your hatred using Olympic. Olympic, in all its intentions and outcomes is all about peaceful competition and good neighborliness and friendship, not a means of display of hatred and jealousy.

As far as Eritrea is considered, don't worry about us. We are working at a level of the bottom two of Maslow's hierarchy, the basic physiological needs of food, water and shelter and the next up, the safety and security of our nation and its people. We will get to the other three in the appropriate time, without rush for empty glory or pride. Probably, if our freedom for independence were not sabotaged, even if our federation in 1952 were not sabotaged by Haileselassie's regime, before Ethiopians began ruuning for gold, probably we could have been in equal footage with Kenyans and Ethiopians. Now it is about time to take our steps, one thing at a time. No need to rush, because, sebat amet yetawerech ager beand Ken mebrat kalberalat, indet hono! indatil.

We will see what would happen next Olympic, one step at a time, after we corrected our shortcomings and all the weaknesses we observed, and further, after we recruited more competitors that are not yet discovered, in this new nation of defiance.

We've shown the World though, that we are part of the game of Sports, be it in Olympics or in other regional and international sports competition. And we are not restricted to running only.

May this Olympic season brings peace and reason to think for good neighborliness and respect to others!

Your analysis shows Ethiopia finished 18th in the world on the over all Medal count. But, IOC's and Yahoo sport's official Medal count charts indicate Ethiopia finishes 27th right next to Turkey. Kenya holds the 18th spot in the over all count.

[elcad, that is by total medal counts, our ranking is based on the official website of Beijing 2008 Games. It is interesting to note that almost all American media use the total medal count to tally the medal table while Beijing 2008 official website, BBC and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC)all count by Gold.
Should a country with 3 bronze medals be ranked higher than a country with 2 gold medals? I don't think so. The New York Times has one of the coolest medal tracking tool, but NYT uses the total medal number

Great. magnificent performance. close to my prediction of five Gold Medals and three silvers. Come london, next four years we shall see coming up other new faces, still winning more golds, even entering untreated sport disciplines. What we need is now our athelets to keep their stamina in great shape and more running fields, and sport centers and excellent coaches and generous skilful administration. We don't want to hear disfavored 'good' runners running for 'richer' countries. I am covetous when the flags of others be hoisted by Ethiopian athlets. What did Ethiopian runners for Bahrain and Turkey did is wonderful for these countries, but gloomy picture to us. As much as we can, we should treat these star atheletes equally with the rest. If we do that they will not leave our team to play for others. Clearly we could have had three more medals, but still i don't have, what ever any resentment thx for Keni and Tiru's golds and Messi and the rest. Real east african Lions. Waauww!

ps. It doesn't mean also I don't understand the complexity of current relation ships between modern nation states in the globalization era. I understand and would like to qualm my passion of Ethiopianess and be realistic in the face of irrefutable melting relationships of nation states occurring in the world. In the very fast and diverse disintegration arrays of periphery and Centre, we are not masters of our wills. Old geopolitical territories will cease to exist and new ones will be manifested, migration of people is iresistable, despite the plea of beautiful Ethiopians that remind us to stay in our homeland.

Selamta and gemechu, the firde gemdil double standard judges:

Don't I have rights to respond to Anti Eritrea elements who focus on bringing politics of identity into this Olympic games, without provocation?

Why now accusing me of jealousy? Besides, where did the winning of Gold, beginning 1960 get you to, that makes me jealous of? Let's run, instead, the real Olympic of dignity and independence so our people of the Horn would be the life time winners, not just in gold medal but in real life.

As far as your alleged jealousy, I've never thought of that and it is not in my blood, for I'm contented enough to whom I am and what I'm capable of. Slow but steady wins the race. Watch my lips!

mihret yawirdilachihu!

In many of the Ethiopians' winning, I've congratulated them appropriately. And I don't have any gradge against Olympic winners, let alone Ethiopians or other Africans.

The Olympic of self reliance and servitude though, never ended, although the Olympic of MEDALS of 2008 is over.

Let the running for gold of dignity and self reliance begin!

In the long distance running itself, why are we not seeing many new faces?

Congratulation Ethiopians on the 2008 Olympic gold rush. I'd say it again, congratulations!

Who questioned your achievements in this competition, compared to other Africans or other runners? Why so much subliminal response of anger against Eritrea and its people? I just stated, let's run for real gold, against servitude and dependency, to bring lasting glory, now the euphoria of gold winning is over? What's wrong with that? Why denegrating Eritrea and why threatened by future Eritrea's achievements, when it become part of the future running games, although it was not successful enough at this time?

Who is blaming me jealous, when I knew deep in my heart, that I'm content enough to be part of the game, in my short 17 years of life, to the future games of sports competition? Why blame Eritreans for any comment that is camouflaged under Ethiopian names?

Death To terati --Errrythrians and teshloklaki cyber bandawoch, I want to congratulate the 36 strong Ethiopian national olympic team members for their superb achievments. I saw the Marathon and I was saddened by Ato Mergas poor tactial and disastours effort. He was setting the pace to early into the race and obviously he paid for it. The announcers talked of his unrestrained energy. Perhaps on the next olympic he will gather steam and experiance. Meanwhile Ato kennenisa was truly our hero and the ladies side were also electrifying. The marathon coaches of Ethiopia, they really need to reevaluate and re-engineer that specific squadron. It was Marathon we made headline some 50 years ago. It must be our top priority. With regard to the smelly skeleton banda referafs of sawa a.k.a. ARETERA once again they disipated into a thin air. I am surpried this rascals even made it to the olympics. The land occupied by grand sons/daughters of Askari mercenaries shall be reabsorbed back to its natural geo-polatical boundries. We must refuse to be conditioned in accepting the so called independent errrythryai. They have failed to govern their tiny illigal enclave, they have failed to sustain any tangible success in any known field to mankind, they are encouraging and soliciting third party enemies to use ARETERA as a springboard to attack ethiopia and finally they are mindles thives, criminals, wantons and heathens who are a danger to the region and must not be allowed to roam on their own. The run away psychos after nearly 18 years of street life, they still have no clue on what to do with their illegal enclave. They need to comeback to their foster parents. Long live Ethiopia!!!!!!!! Death to askari Erithreans worldwide.

Watch for copy rights of Ahiya, here. You could be in trouble, man!

You must have smoked your 3000 years old bango from your masters. You're becoming erratic and nonsensical. Who is banda in Mercinary foodaid in Somalia anyways? Who liberated itself and who is hired as mercinary, a foodaid banda?

I don't think all the Ethiopians would say the same like you, that "...Ethiopia's huge and yet untapped vast resources are under the control of Ethiopians to benefit All Ethiopians from west to east & north to south!!!!!!," unless you're Dedebit's mafia from Abay Tigrai, in camouflage!

You will disintegrate to wither away before you see death of Eritrea. If you wish me death, may be possible, you might have a darkened tongue. You could be Ethiopian buddha. Wishing death to Eritrea though, is uncalled for. As long as Shaebia, your worst nightmare wudib and the selfless Eritreans are there in life, you'll never see it happened. It is just the usual Ethiopian losers and the jealous and Hasadat Tegaru competitive dream.

The problem of this Olympic competition is, that you want to keep this euphoria for life, projecting the winning of Olympic gold in real life, against Woyane. I don't think that will happen in 2 weeks competition. I can feel the pain that is eating you, deep inside.

Congratulations on your accumulation of the Gold which started in 1960, when we started running for independence that brought gold in 1991! I hope this gold would bring enlightening as African, away from dependency and servitude.

Leaving polemics aside, honestly, congratulation to Ethiopians and kenyans for your achievements in China's 2008 Olympic games. Congratulation on Eritrean runners also who brought Eritrea on board to be on equal competition rights of sports. We will be back with more competitions in the future!

I think it is a good achievement for our athletes and it is their hard work. However, it’s believed that the federation need a strong restructuring on technical expertise upgrade and better management. If we take this Olympic more than 50% of the medal count in total number and quality of the precious metal was obtained by two athletes unlike Sydney a lot of athletes were took role for the record medals share. If we take the men & women marathon, it lacks the advantage of team psychological grouping . Specially on yesterday marathon all the three athletes could be run together in the leading pack , the result would be a better result. The humble athlete Derbia Mergia who was supplying water to his contender , his energy might be replenish if was talking and run side by side with one of his team mates . It is logical that there is a big difference on exhaustibility if any of us planning to walk long distance alone or with a friend. I do not want to discredit the marvelous individual and team training given to long distance (5k& 10K) runners and this kind of training has to be expanded to middle distance and Marathon too. The federation has to work extensively in producing many athletes in quality and quantity by targeting the middle schools in various rural areas . There are a lot of strategies to develop a sport tradition in the country. One of the best methods is by organizing annual or semiannual regional or national sport festival. This can be effective by producing a multi sport tradition by providing a sport activity area in school and in each kebele community area. By doing these, it’s advantageous for the youth not being involved in any societal damaging activity. It is also good to give technical and physiological upgrading skill to school sport instructors yearly and incentive or bonus to good sport instructor who helping in producing good athlete in national level

The glory of your barren nation was over 17 years ago. Imagine my delusional friend, if your little shit called Eritrea is part of the mighty and gracious Ethiopia right at this moment, she should have been sharing this historic triumph with the rest of Ethiopia. Forget about your wishful thinking of "a future Olympic power house Eritrea", the survival of Eritrea it self is very un likely. Your rubbish dry land is diminishing as fast as she rose. That’s what you people do the best. Rise fast and collapse expeditiously. If you see your so called Marathon runners yesterday, they were in front of the bunch for the first ten minutes and dropped like a dead fish then. There is no consistency there. Because, they have no passion. In fact success for Eritreans means to see the failure of Ethiopians. The fact was the rest of the Olympians were competing for great sportsmanship & honor by bringing as many medals as possible to their nation but your little useless land and its people were competing to see Ethiopia be unsuccessful. But, look what happened, they were no near to the front line at the end, but once again the heroic Ethiopians finished with victory. Look at your self bozo, what are you doing here? You don't want to be associated with Ethiopians? Fine! Then get the hell out of this forum, as it is to be for Ethiopia and its affairs. No one is seeking opinion from your dead inferior brain, for God sake. Then, why don't you stay where you belong with your complex driven hogwash cousins. Why are you sniffing around here dude?

I thank you for your clarification. By most of the US media accounts Ethiopia ranked 27th and 18th by others, either ways I am ecstatic. The US media tally focused on the total medal count, because the US won most of the medals. But China got most of the gold. Probably some bias? My guess is there might be some kind of point system for every medal and they perhaps determined the ranking by adding these points.

Dear Nazret,

Thank for u have been very active in the beijing games. Ethiopia performed good.
Nevertheless, I would like to put my reservations. If u see our success in trendwide analysis, it shows we are always there. We failed to have structural changes. WE do not have to be more proud bc we are the second or the first in Africa. We started winning olympics long time ago..40+ years. . As a country vision, we lack growth and we are stacked with the same 10k and 5k. If u see our performance now, it was achieved mainly by two elite athelets: Tiru and kenyy. As a country, we need to improve our sport system. WE r 80 million strong! We need to compete starting from short distance.
We need to have long term plan and a social responsibility. For eg: withdrawal of haile from the olympics marathon was unwise and he his competition in 10k was a bit meaningless except for participation as he is already glorified. He should have given a chance to other young athletes. We have been eating bread for so long, let us look for the cake.
God bless Ethiopia

We thank them for their outstanding performance. We have many strong athletes, but we only have two or three with special talent and we know who they are. these are the athletes who are capable to accelerate at the right time towards their success. This can not happen for ever, there fore the officials in the federation must excute continuous plan to back up these special athletes.

next step is to diversify as these olympics hinted we have some potential in middle distance running.

In 3000 steple, i think there is some probability we hear about ethiopia very soon. 1500 is a more complicated race, so may be with experiance, these athletes will grap something.

I was also very impressed by kenya, who came with a strong and diversified side ans managed to rise in the top 15.And that, after the very troubled year they went through..wow.

A refreshingly optimistic, up lifting post that helps us see solidarity (be it politics or diplomacy) through sport.

General comment: Is it customary to wear and fly the big cloth flag associated with a regime of the times? Can’t just the year in huge numbers be written on it? Some symbols represent deeper meanings pro or against it. How about just the flag with out the symbol?

If we belive that the victöry of Kenya and Ethiopia is a victöry tö åll Africa, how come we go back again and reduce the victory to an Oromo victory-from continental to very local and triabal ! come on guys! this is unacceptable, and pathetic way of thinking as many of you put it. I am 100% Oromo from Ambo, however, I or my parents and relatives never felt that the victory belongs to Oromia or Oromo. How many of us thought about triabal victory prior to 1990? you guys are just following a political trend, which is not taking us anywhere. As many commented above, please try to see the world around you with positive mind and a little optimism. Above all, please remember the price of hatrade ( rembber what happened in Burundi, now in Sudan, and of course Europe during the Great wars).Even the Eritreans can be the best friends in the world if you we respect thier wants and needs. They wanted independence, they fought for it, and there you go ! they got it! Just congrtulate them for the success. Do you support the little sweet Tibet? sure you do. then support Eritrea, otherwise you are contradicting yourself which is not a good sign.
Be positive, and always think of what you leave behind for the next generation.

Love to all of you

chebseta [Visitor], you said we shuld congradulste eritreans, congradulate for what? for being pain in the a*ss? my freind , no one wants eritrean indipendence the way ethiopians do, but it's their dependence on ethiopia we are tired of, brothere, we all thought we would get peace at last when they gained their so called indipendenc(slavery) but look it didn't take them too long before they got bored with peace and played with fire. these scams thought they distroyed ethiopia just because they distroyed a warehouse in Gotera (curtsy of Woyanee). little they knew ethiopia is much more than that. I hope they have lerned they lesson, if not they are welcome to Badime!

Congradulation!!!!!! to endividuals and Countries who participated and or won medals.
The whole objective of Olympic game is to bring people and countries together respecting their ideological, political and all kinds of differences.
In my opinion hate and politics should not come on this comment forum.
PLEASE GUYS STOP GRAWLING AT EACH OTHER.

Fellow Ethiopians

Just another interesting statistic to make us prouder. Our 37 jegnoch who practice in underfunded facilities with little support from the federation got 4 gold. One more than Canada, who with all the funding in the world and get this- 321 athletes!! Thats right they have nearly 10 times the athlets we do and they only got 3 gold! We are 18 , them 19th. Unbelievable. It really shows us the HOLY TRINlTY Luvs our glourious nation and makes me proud as hell to be Abesha.

Fabulous performance Team Ethiopia! We are proud of your achievements.

ZxAmiche - You seem to have plenty of time to waste. Life is too short so do something constructive with your time rather than posting negative garbage here. Get a life, get a job! You need to keep your comments short and all … What a sad >:XX>:XX
