Folks, we need to raise awareness to this debilitating disease called Diabetis. There are so many people suffering from it, yet the awareness level is too low.

I was afraid that this day and this bad news would come soon and is imminent as his health was deteriorating very fast.

It is just as part of me and my good memories of the old days have died with him.I do remember that we run into him in a wheel chair at a Pentagon City Mall in Virginia a couple of months ago, while I was shopping with my family. He recognized us from a distance that we were Ethiopians and was staring at us in a very appealing and nostalgic way. We approached him and greeted him with all the respect, love and affection that he deserved and asked him how he was doing? He said he is doing well.

If nature could render to us an optional course to let its best stay for long in this world to give us light and guidance, we would appeal to the creator that Tilahun would sing to us for eternity about love, unity and patriotism. But nature has its own course and I hope those of us who adore him would get solace with his eternal songs and unparalled works he offered to us all his life. He foretold about this moment when he sang,

Mot Enkuan Chekino Wosdo Kemiasker
Minale Degagun Dagimegna Bifetr

There are few in this world that would care about the legacy that they would leave after they passed away and Tilahun was one of those few and has showed to us how we can make use of our lives to the betterment of others and how we should always live for the truth. He actually taught us about this when he sang,

Ye ewnetn Menged Tesasche
Teketahu Bewshet Temerche
Ewnet Marign Elalehu
Yikirta Elemnalehu

My deep condolences to all his family.

We will not be sad. We will not cry. Instead we will sing his songs for the past 50 plus years and dance until the time comes each of us to meet him again if we get chance to reach the place he will get there.

To live a life on earth the way he did is the most valuable achievements any blessed human being can get. He didn't have dirty money. Because he didn’t care about himself but to the Ethiopian people. He made laugh, dance and cry the Ethiopian people by being there in a good and bad time. He deserves the Entire Ethiopian people unconditional love, respect, and admiration forever.

Tilahun is forever.

Death is the eminent one to all living things. Doing the right thing is the only thing makes a difference in anybody’s life.

The Ethiopian enemies (the Kilil and Ethnic policy doctrines) also will die a bad death after living a restless and crime life. The Ethiopian people will cry that time from happiness when they are gone. The Ethiopian people will cry in their grave from sadness, too that they will be cancers also including in hell towards those made less mistakes on earth than these Tigry evils.

Can they learn something from our beloved Tilahun Gessese’s life? Do they have still a human conscious to correct the mistake rather than Kilil, Ethnic policy and Greater Tigry this and Tigry that, which is a dead and stony place producing evils like them?

Let God raise hands on them to save Ethiopia.

Tilahun Gessese is entering to another chapter in the Ethiopian people life. He is a forever son of Ethiopia.

It is with great sadness and shock that I learnt of the passing away of Dr. Tilahun Gessesse. By any means, this is the greatest loss of all times in the history of our country.

May the almighty God place his soul in heavens, and bestow his families, admirers, and all the people of Ethiopia the serenity and strength.

I am deeply saddened by the passing away of Ethiopia’s 'greatest vocalist', Tilahun Gesesse who has single handedly modernized Ethiopian music. (He had a magnificent voice that went along in perfect harmony with the arrangements of extraordinary singers and music composers. His work associates were supremely hilarious just like him who were probably one of the most gifted and learned Ethiopian musicians /ever lived/. As my stark memory tells me. We uniquely remember the talents behind his magical vocal performance, behind his ‘thorn bird’, high pitched voice, the extraordinary song writers and arrangers: Captain Sahle Degago, Hailu Ashine et al..,) We remember in this accord the perfectly melting “Yezenbaba mar Nesh” and “Monalizaye Nesh” tunes - very simple and memorable
Verses – to Ethiopians’ mostly lulling lullabies sung by every body from Jimma to Gondar, from Assab to Metu. They were the most heart-warming tunes and songs to Ethiopians when they felt needing consolation, they easily are taken snatched by them.

His songs staged from the Imperial bodyguard music orchestra caught the hearts and imagination of Ethiopians and even their neighbor countries’ folks. A great common effort of his, and his colleagues modernized Ethiopian traditional music. His music, albeit sung mostly in Amharic, the National tongue, people from all corners of Ethiopia whistled and mumbled his highly crafted song and enthralled themselves in clutching Tilahun's songs in their belief.

Tilahun God Bless You!

We all die in the end. We just don't know when the final call comes to you and I. It is sad to hear Tilahun's passing away. He voiced so much of our joys, sorrows, and everything in between. We had him for over 50 years. A very appropriate song I can think of at the moment is Tnfashe TeqerTso Yqemet Malqesha...

I was browsing Ethiopia-related websites and all seem to carry the news of Tilahun's death and writing their condolescences in so many words. For the moment we all seem to agree on one thing and to care about each other. The big question is if we can sustain it and if we can look back and declare our life had any purpose and meaning to bring to those we shared our life with.

Tilahun eternal… shining light in gold
In life… or beyond…
Light to our soul… guide to our path
A way unto the forth
Honest to his belief… a timeless mentor…
Utopian… to the core
None there is to equal… ‘Tiliye’ the Doctor.
Glaring light… on the east, south or west
Ethiopia his motto... Ethiopian to the last
Sure there is a mistake… to say he has died
Since death has no power… to claim a man
Everywhere… embodied
Since ‘death’ has no meaning… for the man ‘Tilahun’
Saved in our soul… saved by all his deed
Ethiopian his whole being… eternal in creed…

Ethiopians must be in shock today, but we all have our time. Is it a coincidence that Tilhun died on Fasika day. Only God can have an answer for that, but it safe to say that Tilahun was one of Ethiopia's hero's and he will never be forgoten.

Sad to hear he is dead!! I am 36 right now. I grew up listening his wonderful songs since I was kid. My dad have recorded me long time ago singing Tilahun's song.I was 4,I think the song was "yelelit cherka!" with my little "koltafa" tongue. Since then, I remained his fun.

I love music. Especially,I used to love singing Tilahun's songs in class, at home, in a bathroom, in the streets...every where.

Well,I will keep on singing his song until God calls me to shut up!!But, this time, in memory of his golden days!!

RIP- Miss you so much!!

One more famous and regal figure with class passed away. Tilahun was stylish and embodied the essence of proper moden Ethiopian public persona. He sang especially well during his early carrier. He has stayed true to the culture by not meddling in foreign stuff except that Sudanese tune. Kassa Tessema, Abebe Bekila and Tilahun Gesesse - all Kebur Zebengas - were true male pioneers and icons of the 20-21th centuries.

shall moulder to dust and together shall lie.

May God bless his soul and be with him to rest in peace. My deepest condolence to his children, family, friends and funs.

Millions of people have loved others and their countries with the reinforcement of Tilahun Gessesses’s music. He was a life of weddings, celebrations, love, joy and hope.

It is as if that generation had come to its end. He broke the fast of Easter on Sunday in celebration of the day Jesus Christ won over death. Tilahun is immortal and will remain in the memories of millions of people. I am choking with tears, but also relieved he knew, he had made millions of people so happy in good and bad times. Considering death is inevitable to all of us, his family and funs should find comfort and celebrate his music. A man like him did not die; he accomplished and rested.

I believe his last marriage could have been a comfort for him; and in some of his video interviews, his beautiful wife joined him. If there is an address to mail her and his children condolence cards, please post it.

Unforgettable,Loving,Humble...Tilahun it was not a long ago we were talking about you,i would say three days ago. We were singing the song " Alemazen Ayiche, Alemazen bayate, lelagnewa Alemaze betemeta deneget..." ; Wow I never thought we would loose you this quick:no:

If only i was to be given the chance to see you once again, I would again tell you how much i love you and admire you. If only i was able to be next to you i would give you a kiss on your forehead and tell you that you're my hero,if i only i knew where you were i could have sat next to you tell you how i always cry when i listen to your song " MINIM GIZE BEHONE ANCHIN KIFU AYENEKA".

I could only tell myself to be strong and to not let your legacy be forgotten. You've paid your deeds to your country, but we owe you big time and we shall payback with great RESPECT AND HONOR.

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU DEARLY !

A lesson should be learned from this patriot Ethiopian who was born to an Amara father and an Oromo mother.

pasted from other website

The Tukur Ambesa medical school is better than the first aid trained woyane fighters. Read below:

One thing I want to say is that Ethiopias health care system got to improve. I listened to ETV about the circumstances of his death. I was even more sadden to learn how it may have prevented this death and/or give him more time. It was a classic death of heart attack.

During heart attach,
People will complain of chest pain, funny feeling in the chest, difficulty of breath, arm pain and in severe cases wheezing. When people go to a hospital, they should be give immediately without delay the following: Oxygen, nitro, aspirin and even morphin before transfering the patinet anywhere. I can not believe they told them to drive to another hospital while he was suffering of an attack. They will have been taken to court if it was here. I know we are poor country but for the sake of God, shouldn't we have some sort of first aid available at any place. No hospital should return patients or refere patient without first given first aid. This Addis Ababa, it is not rural Ethiopia.

It is a sad day and so shame to the hospital who told them to drive away to another hospital without checking the patinet first. The government should take this lesson and force the health department to establish some sort of regulation so that this never happens again. Just taking simple steps can save a lot of people. Heart attack and stroke should be given no time. There is a short window to save patients during those two cases and every effort should be attempted before transfering patient.

Also, do not we have an ambulance system to carry Tilahun to hospital? Very sad.

I don’t know what to say. It is very sad news I have ever heard. Tilahun is a man who spent the whole of his life by praising the beauty, hospitality, etc of the country he loves to death. He is irreplaceable. He sang about everything, love/ hate, hunger/ wealth, happiness/sadness,.you name it. I can say no body loves and cry for that country to his level. May your soul rest in peace. Finally, Tilleye you will be remembered by all of us and the generation to come.

He who has gone, so we but cherish his memory, abides with us, more potent, nay, more present than the living man.
Hold tight to memories for comfort.
Lean on your friends for strength, and always remember how much you are cared about.
As you comprehend this profound loss, let yourself cry knowing each tear is a note of love rising to the heavens.
Like a bird singing in the rain, let grateful memories survive in time of sorrow.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Peace, prayers and blessings.
And you should always know, wherever you may go, No matter where you are, WE will never be far away
Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.
In the night of death, hope sees a star, and listening love can hear the rustle of a wing.
May you take comfort in knowing an angel is watching over you.
Words cannot even begin to express our sorrow.
You are in our prayers.
May your memories give you strength.
Whom the heart of man shuts out, Sometimes the heart of God takes in, And fences them all round about, With silence ‘mid the world’s loud din.
Remember that we love and care about you.
May the love of those around you help you through the days ahead.

Tilahun Gessesse (Amharic: ጥላሁን ገሠሠ) (also spelled Telahun Gesesse or Tlahoun Gèssèssè) was an Ethiopian singer. He was born on September 29, 1940, in Addis Ababa and died on April 19, 2009.

Gessesse was born to Woizero Gete Gurmu and Ato Gessesse Negusse. When he was fourteen years old, he was taken by his grandfather to Waliso where he began attending Ras Gobena Elementary School.

As time went by, his interest in music became increasingly clear, although his grandfather urged him to concentrate on his academic studies. The Ras Gobena School Principal Mr. Shedad (who was from Sudan), encouraged Gessesse's interest in music and urged him to go to Sudan to pursue his music career. Although Gessesse did not go to Sudan, he took Mr. Shedad's advice very seriously. When Woizro Negatwa Kelkai, Ato Eyoel Yohanes and others artists from the Hager Fikir Theatre came to his school to perform, Gessesse took the opportunity to discuss his interest in music with Ato Eyoel. He was told to go to Addis Ababa if he wanted to pursue a career in the field.

Gessesse left school to go to Addis Ababa, a journey he began on foot without his grandfather's consent. When his grandfather realized that Tilahun was no longer in Woliso, he informed Gessesse's great-aunt in Tulu Bolo. After Gessesse traveled fifteen kilometers on foot, he was caught in Tulu Bolo and stayed overnight with his great-aunt Woizero Temene Bantu. The next day, he was forced to return back to his grandfather in Woliso. Since his interest in music lay deep in his heart, Gessesse chose not to stay at his grandfather's house in Woliso. After staying only one night at his grandfather’s house, he again began his journey to Addis Ababa, this time hiding himself in the back of a loaded truck.

In Addis Ababa, Gessesse was first hired by the Hager Fikir Association, which is now known as Hager Fikir Theater. After a few years at the Hager Fikir Theater, he joined the Imperial Bodyguard Band where he became a leading star singer. During his time with the band, Gessesse ran afoul of the government after the attempted coup d'état of December 1960 by the Imperial Bodyguard. He was arrested and put in prison for a time.

Sorry to hear the sad news. We all grew with his music and style. Coincidenntally and truly unaware of his failing health conditions, I just bought one of his DCs for 4 dollars on last Sunday from little store the in hood. It was just coindence, I guest. When I got into store and browsed for awhile to find my favorite Ethiopian vocalists, I recognized no more than dozen faces including him among tons of other new strange, faces and names, which are probably new generation. I personally stuck with oldies of both Amharic, Somali and Oromo songs and singers, except Afro from the new generation. Since I already had most of them, including Mohamoud Ahmed, Alemayo Eshettu, Kuku Sebssibe,Asteter Aweke, Hibist Tiruneh, Ali Birra, Afro, Ephrem and few other I pull out his CDs.

May Allah bless upon soul, amine!

A lot has been said about the legend, and that will sayed forever. He is and will be the father of Ethiiopian art histry.

I have never seen my Dad crying untill today, atlist not infront of his kids, but today he sobed infront of me and he said 'now we lost our voice and joy' I cried with him relating little memories I had with Tilahuns Song.

My dad always told me how Tilahun related his songs with the his present situations, and what a memory they had with his songs and with hagerfikir friends, and more.....so whenever I listen Tilahuns voice I feel the presence of my Dad with me.

Tilahun is a pearl and precious jewel IN THE LIVES OF MANY. A Light is darkened in the lifes of majority Ethiopians, that will never be replaced.

As he always loved his people and his country, he might be a reason for saving a lot of ethiopians diying because of poor medical attention, for those who are just forgotten because of careless nurses and Doctors. I hope the adminstration of the hospital who told the family to drive to another hospital would get sued, so other facilities would learn a lesson

Tilahun will always remain in our memories. His death is physical, but psychologically, he is always with us.
I wonder where Hella (His daughter) would be, any way my deepest condolecence for the whole family.

R.I.P

Every Ethiopian loves the great VOCALIST TILAHUN GESSESSE, but Yonas Amsterdam is the only odd person ever to claim hatred to the King of Ethiopian music Tilahun Gessesse.
Our country Ethiopia lost her beloved, greatest of all Ethiopian vocalists and singers the country ever blessed to have.
A friend of mine from Philadelphia heralded me the death of our great Ethiopian singer Tilahun. We are saddened by the loss. We all are mortals, but Tilahun’s life time contributions and achievements make his death a unique loss to all Ethiopians. Tilahun considers Ethiopia and Ethiopians as his life and his property. Everybody knows the late Tilahun was the true son of Ethiopia under all the circumstances our country had gone through.
God rest Tilahun’s soul in peace.
I wish the best of time and strength to his family, supporters and lovers.

He sang about issues that hit too close to home: love, friendship, family, truth, beauty, country, liberity, justice, and unity. He made us laugh and cry. He was with us in good and bad times. He was with us when we date and when we celebrated marriage. And his voice was extraordinarily awesome. He would be remembered in Ethiopia for many gererations to come. Future generations of Ethiopians will talk about him like Western citizens do with regard to Beethoven and Mozart. May God rest his soul in peace.

May Almighty God give peace and rest to his soul !
Tilahun was a true Ethiopian Son. His life and work exemplified his love for his country and his fellow citizens.
Whose life was not touched by Tilahun? He was and always will be dear and near to the heart of every Ethiopian - young and old, men and women. His core values and believes have never been blown by the sweeping wind of hurricanes that have shaken our country for many decades. He passed away today and we will all follow him tomorrow. Although he is not with us, the flam he lit will continue to burn and shine even brighter. Yes, we are all very sad. But let us not forget that he went to a better place leaving us with invaluable wealth of his artistic performances, patriotism and love. When we die we all be judged not by the number of years we lived , how we dressed up, or what type house we lived in but by the way we made differences in the world we lived in. That was exactly Tilahun was doing all his life, making the world we live in a better place. His music was not just an entertainment, but also a voice for the silent, a weapon to fight social plights, a lesson to live a better life, a commander in chief to solders inline of duty who defend the sovereignty of our country , a medicine for love, a comfort for sorrow and above all a loud, clear and universal voice for his country and its people. He did what he was suppose to do and more. This is the time not only to mourn a fallen hero but also a time to ask ourselves who we are and how are we living our lives. What would people say about us if we die today?

My heart goes out to Tilahuns immediate family and his extended family (the Ethiopian people). May God bless you all!

It is sad. Tilahun you are with us always.

Hope some one with a good talent will make one of the best film ever made based on Tilahun's life history.

He has sang hundreds songs but today 'Abat des yilewal lig siweledilet sticks in my mind'. So i will sing this song as a farewell to my beloved ever living Tilahun Geessesse.
