DIRE DAWA, Ethiopia (NNS)
-- Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion NMCB 5 currently assigned to Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa at Camp Lemonier, Djibouti, began assembling tents with the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) Aug. 19 to house some of the approximately 6,000 people left without homes because of recent floods here.

060821-N-7770P-001 Dire Dawa, Ethiopia (Aug. 21, 2006) - A team of U.S. Navy Seabees assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Five (NMCB 5), attached to Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa (CJTF HOA), set up tents to house approximately 6,000 displaced victims of a devastating flood that hit Dire Dawa, Ethiopia. NMCB-5 joined a multi-national effort, including Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in the humanitarian effort following 15 days of heavy rain that washed away roads and homes in the region. An estimated 250 people are confirmed dead and another 300 are still missing as a result of the four-meter-high wall of water that crashed through the city of Dire Dawa Aug. 6.

The 6,000 displaced people are currently sheltered in schools throughout the city.

The Seabees are part of a cooperative effort, which includes the ENDF and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), to help the local government provide shelter and other assistance to the flood victims.

Additional services and items, such as food, mattresses, water treatment materials, and supplies to improve sanitation conditions are being provided through partner agencies, including CARE, Population Services International, and the International Rescue Committee.

Navy Cmdr. Paul Vandenberg of CJTF-HOA and Glenn Anders, USAID’s mission director, met with the mayor of Dire Dawa and other officials to make recommendations for additional assistance.

Dr. Tsegereda Kifle, the health minister for the Dire Dawa region, approved setting up a medical clinic at a nearby school to provide emergency care to victims.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Steven Shadley, of CJTF-HOA’s medical training team, said that medical professionals from CJTF-HOA will be in Dire Dawa this week to assist the local healthcare providers with medical care to the displaced residents, as well as provide education and counseling on basic healthcare.

But the immediate need is shelter and sanitation services, which the Seabees are providing with the ENDF. They will assemble more than 60 tents for the victims of the flood and will provide toilets for the camp, as well.

It is an amazing humanitarian response by the long time friend of our people and nation.
The joint task force will boost the rescue operations that have been taken and still being taken by Ethiopian government. I hope life will turn in to normal soon.

There is no much word to express to your humanitarian assistance to the Ethiopian people particularly to Dire and environs residents or flood victims. So just thank you so-much for all your assistance.

This is to our brothers in the EDF, please try to get all the necessary experiences to tackle such events in the near future if there will be any. It is only natural to prepare to prevent a disaster, so next time we don’t have to ask our brothers in the US Navy.

God Bless Americans. You Love them or you hate them simply they are the BEST.

God Bless You All!

Ras Abeba Arigyi,

I think you are Eritrean and you just jealous with superb skills of the present Ethiopian government diplomacy.

Whatever your motivation would be but we love the USA and we welcome the Seabees in Ethiopia. We are parts of the world.

I dont know where my previous post went, i guess it wasnt a PG for Nazret.com, its alright thought.

Anyways, i still think for every charity work the US does, it wants something in return. This is not the first time for Ethiopians to experience severe natural desasters; but why is the US involved now? One must first understand the nature of Americas Foreign policy, especially of this adminstartion. They have never cared about the people of other countries, and they will never will. I have no doubt that they want to use Ethiopia for something. This is their way of gettinig the hearts of ethiopians. People need to understand what the US gove really is and what they are doing. Anyways, i'm glad those soldiers are helping out. Those people need every help they can get. But US's involvment in Eth should be taken with a grain of salt.

Ras Abebe Argayi,

There is nothing in this article that talks about governance or politics. I not only agree with "Thank You" but, I believe that you are a member of the CUD North America which is dividing iself. You should have learned something from your parents a long time ago, there is a time and place for things like what you just said.

I would like to thank the Government of Ethiopia and the Government of the United States of America as well as our African Union and Government/People of Libya as well as the Ethiopian people who have organized collection drives to help the relief efforts.

Ras Abebe Argayi,

Also note that in the US, the Hurricane Katrina disaster (one year ago from tomorrow - 8/23/2006) was a major problem for the US. It still is a major problem for the citizens of New Orleans who cannot get back home. That had and has nothing to do about the quality of government. The hurricane is a natural disaster, just like these floods.

Please be more smart with your words. Wash your mouth with soap, I am sure your mother used to do that! You have such a dirty mouth just like all the other political/ethnic-hatred promoting mongering people of the CUD.

Thank you,

Gebru,

Make up your mind....do you want the Americans helping the poor or not?...be consistent.

Abebe Aregay,

Everything you stand for stinks...CUD, your paraniod mind, your excuses for not helping your fellow Ethiopians, your sick mindedness at criticizing others who are bringing clean water, food and hope for the poor and needy who have just seen their family drown and their belongings washed away. Where are your CUD friends when it comes to doing a bit of work to help their the poor - the poor who elected them. After all they were elected by ALL of them (so they say) Or are they all in Kaliti? Get a life!

Re Ras Abebe Argayi,

It is really sad that you and others like you are still talking about the past than the present. This article is talking about the natural disaster in Ethiopia today and the flood victimized peoples how to support them. Your idea is way different than the actual content this article.

I think it would have been very helpful, if we stop talking nonsens things here and stretch our hands to the flood victims. Today there are a lots of people exted their support and collected so much money and send it to those who needs it.
What do you do your self to help these flood victim people? nothing but crying for other issues.

You could ask me what do I did toward this effort my self? Well, about five days a go, I was contributed a $ 500 Euro through my community. I think it is great as much as I am concern. So we have been contributing almost $ 3000.00 Euro so far.

I think all Ethiopian around the glob, should have contributed some sort of money to this effort for saving lifes, instead barking on nazret.com.
Especially, Tigrayen should stretch their hands as usual through their community as well.

Thank you America and also the ENDF for their effort. Let us hope that we will come out stronger and more united from this one.

Also, I remember reading recently on this same website an article linking the wind system in the highlands of our country and the hurricanes hitting the US. I also notice that there is this huge flooding in Ethiopia and almost no hurricane in America.

Is there a direct link here?

Like a link between the warming up of the Pacific (again), due to the El Nino effect and our weather system?

I wonder what part did deforestation in Ethiopia played in the Global climate deregulation on top of the effects of CO2 emission...

Eventually any long-term environmental solution for Ethiopia will have to include forestation in a huge scale. Maybe the army can help in this in the future? It sure is a question of survival at this point. Our worst enemies are not always the ones we think they are.

Cheers,

Ras Abeba and Kolometera

You are right. It might be only right to thank the soldiers for their help, but it is also important to put things in perspective.

Is it not ironic the American ambassador should be actively suppressing the democratic movement of the Ethiopian people and Ethiopians are expected to be greatful for the help of the soldiers. Anyway what are these soldiers doing in our region.

Coming back to the subject and putting things in perspective, I wonder how the victims of the flood could have fared with the jailed leaders at the helm.

On a practical note there should be mechanisms for Ethiopians all over the world to contribute towards recovery from disasters.

May God spare them further hardship.
