Virgin Nigeria dumps Virgin Atlantic, signs pact with Ethiopian Airlines

By WALE HAASTRUP

The journey to re-branding Virgin Nigeria Airways has finally begun, as the airline over the weekend dumped Virgin Atlantic as its technical partner.

This follows the signing of a technical service agreement (TSA) between Virgin Nigeria Airways and Ethiopian Airlines emerging as the first two African airlines to sign such, covering training, maintenance and resource pooling, and signaling a major boost in technical cooperation among African airlines. According to Francis Ayigbe, corporate communications manager of Virgin Nigeria, the signing in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by Girma Wake, managing director of Ethiopian Airlines and Dapo Olumide, chief executive officer, Virgin Nigeria Airways, signals the cementing and commencement of technical partnership between both airlines.

Virgin Nigeria seals technical deal with Ethiopian Airlines, considers rebranding

By Wole Shadare, just back from Addis Ababa
The Guardian

Described as a paradigm shift, Virgin Nigeria has signed a technical service agreement with Ethiopian Airlines, which is a first step towards the plan by the carrier to drop the Virgin brand.

Most Nigerian airlines have their technical assistance with European or American airlines, but the new partnership of Ethiopian Airlines with the Nigerian carrier, would offer training advantages to the carrier's pilots, cabin crew and engineers.

Nigeria is the single largest market for ET and this is a GREAT move by ET to cement its role in the further development of the Nigerian aviation market. A staggering 21% of ET Shebamiles members are from Nigeria (see: http://www.ethiopianairlines.com/en/corporate/annualreport.aspx Annual report for 2007/2008, page 8). ET MRO is possibly the best in Africa, and with Virgin Nigeria operating B737 fleet, ET is an obvious choice as a partner. However, it looks like VN is saddled by lots of debts and would need to raise new capital to be successful. (I also hope ET follows in the Virgin Nigeria footsteps and orders Embraer 170/190 small jets)

The only question I have is what happens now to the ET investment in the Lome-based ASKY airline? Maybe these are seem as parallel tracks, unless the ET-VN agreement expands to include investment and other services.

This is good for Africa and Africans. Interdependence among the African countries is the key towards turning the motherland around and improving Africa's image around the world. I wish that one day, African resources will be used for the true furthering of its people, not to line the pockets of petty dictators, bureaucrats, corporations and selfish individuals. Even though I'm Black American, it hurts me to see the birth place of all human beings continually exploited. I luv Africa and I'm proud to be one of her seeds. The new Neo-colonialism has begun and it is for the exploitation of African lands and resources, they don't give a damn about its people.

You have raised good points and question dear brother. It is good to read well informed and articulated comment. It is often not easy to find one on this site. I do agree with you that ET should add Embraer 170/190 a pictured VN aircraft on the top of the article. Embraer, a Brazilian make have been advancing small region jet market and you see a lot of these new aircrafts in the U.S. These are very much fuel effecient and modern aircrafts. I do think ET ought to consider expanding its fleet in this direction.

this must be one of the funiest story I read on Nazret for a long time. Who is dumping who? Only 4 weeks ago I read a news from UK reffering Sir Richard Branson that Virgin is dumping the Nigeria Air as a result of corruption and poor work ethics. I will be surprised how ours are going to survive that culture? I suppose you can break a stone with stone.
