Who are the Ethiopian opposition?

Nov 3 (Reuters) - Ethiopian opposition parties say nearly 450 members have been jailed to stop them standing as candidates in national elections in May next year. The government says they are trying to discredit a poll they have no chance of winning.

Here are some key facts about the opposition in Ethiopia:

* Eight parties are trying to register as a coalition to fight the elections under the name Medrek -- the Forum -- while retaining their own structures and leadership.

Some Ethiopians worry Medrek is united only in its opposition to the government and there are too many policy differences among its leaders to govern effectively.

* Parties outside the Medrek coalition include the All Ethiopia Unity Organisation and the Ethiopian Democratic Party. Although both are represented in parliament, they have been less active in campaigning than Medrek so far.

* Several ethnicity-based rebel groups operate in the vast country, notably the Ogaden National Liberation Front and the Oromo Liberation Front. Opposition parties say the rebels are used as an excuse to arrest politicians.

* A group of parties called the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) led the opposition during the last national elections in 2005. When the government declared victory, they said the result was fixed and street protests broke out in Addis Ababa.

* Security forces killed about 200 protesters who Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said were trying to overthrow his government. CUD leaders were jailed after being accused of inciting the violence.

* The opposition leaders were pardoned in 2007 but the CUD broke up soon afterwards. One of its leaders, Birtukan Mideksa, formed the Unity for Democracy and Justice party (now part of Medrek), but was sent back to prison after the government said she had violated the terms of the pardon.

* Another CUD alumnus, Berhanu Nega, went to the United States and formed an opposition group, May 15th, named after the date of the 2005 poll. He was convicted in absentia in August this year of plotting a coup with former and serving military officers.

* Three opposition parties have agreed a code of conduct with the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), but Medrek refused to participate in the talks, demanding bi-lateral negotiations on issues it said were left out, including reform of Ethiopia's electoral board.

* Meles has dismissed the opposition as "former Mengistu loyalists", a reference to former communist dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam whom a rebel group led by Meles and others overthrew in 1991 after a 17-year civil war.

* Medrek has three prominent ruling party defectors in its ranks -- former President Negaso Gidada, former Defence Minister Seye Abraha and former regional President Gebru Asrat. Meles has called them "a sprinkling of new spices" for the opposition.

In my opinion the merge of opposition paries is not healthy. They could merge in opposing the government in issues and they could also have a debate where they could expose Meles 's triks but to actualy run as party to run election together it is not practical. Many difference that could crop and destroy the party. All run as your conviction and do a good job at it and that will take more sit from EPDRF and if EPDRF is a rulling party but not majority then the change will be mature and healthy!

If they join hands they need at least 3 years to iron issues and united in most of the issues.

It was a good observation. I like the way the article was written. The agreement on the code of conduct in relation to the election is a landmark in Ethiopian politics. We can see light at the end of the tunnel, its a good beginning and I hope those who decided to boucott the discussion will come on board the the weeks and months to come. The EPRDF seems to be initiating good ideas that will ultimately help our country. Ethiopia belongs to all of us and has no stepkids. We all are ethiopians irrespective of our ethnic, religious and political backgrounds. The EPRDF has every right to govern the country as long as its elected by the majority. Some of the opposition leaders arent showing tolerance to the incumbant, they want to see the EPRDF overthrown for good, they don want to see EPRDF to be part of the political dynamism in Ethiopia. All the political groups in Ethiopia do enjoy popular support from some sections of our community. Calling names and character assasination wont help us all. The only thing forward is to build and consolidate the democratic institutions.

are they really ready to lead the country or running for seat...unfortunately for them meles wouldn't give them his chair away...my people don't be foolish, don't be emotional, but of course we almost Ethiopian people are a good patriot and we need a leader who can make a change for our country. when i say don't be foolish, emotional don't see that as stereotyping. when hailesilase is emperor of Ethiopia many people do not like the way he leads the country and same as dictator derg and now meles, but think about the next one r they capable of to lead the country, capable of to Bear many our problems and hold our society together? lets look around before decide who is the better one. i am clean Ethiopian i ain't kinigit, EPDRf who ever you cal it but whoever does that, i want to see the changing of Ethiopia.

You see the SO CALLED OPPOSITIONS WAKNESS!

This reporter didn't say the details and major issues
_ why medrek didn't participate in the negotiation.
_major political abd social issues medrek raisies...
_how much support the oppositions have among the ethiopians...
All these is manifestations of the weakness of the opposition. They should use all means to get across their political, economical and social programmes they would perform to bring the country out of the mess it's in...
It seems to me that they're obscure to THE WORLD COMMUNITY.
THEY WASTE THEIR TIME IN BICKERING AMONG THEMSELVES AND THE RUN AWAYS-HOW MUCH INK IS WASTED IN INSULTING THE NEW MELES "CANDIDATE",Shawl(I feel bad when I say this..because I couldn't get much information why Shawl joined meles. On the other hand I admitt that Shawl has democratic right to what he & his party thinks is ritht.).
Name callings won't do them any good. Instead they're supposed to bring to the attention of the RUN AWAYS the real world they know...They should use other alternatives_such as using the other party members of Shawl to fight him if they could bring facts against him.
THEY FORGET THAT WE ARE LIVING IN THE WORLD WHERE ADVERTISEMENT HAS TAKEN OVER ALL OTHER MEANS OF COMMUNICATIONS...THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO ADVERTISE THEMSLEVES VERY WELL...

Medrek is a Joke! Shewedean, Kidetu, Chamasir and Co. are stooges. That would leave us with the real opposition of Berhanu Nega's Ginbot 7 for a wide range struugle and Obang Metho's Solidarity, hopfully will be led by Birtukan after getting out of prison. A coalation of the latter two is the only real choice to save Ethiopianess as we know it!

Terrorist TPLF used Hailu Shawel, Bedru Adem and W/ro Tigist to destroy what was left of Kinijit after the terrorist TPLF had been forced to release Kinijit leaders from its dungeons. Terrorist TPLF used its mouthpieces (weekend talkshows) in the diaspora especially in the U.S. The mouthpieces of the terrorist TPLF in Washington, D.C. metropolitan area include Mirchawu's, Negussie Hode Meragn's and Selam radios. Especially Mirchawu's and negussie's radios play bad cap-good cap to deceive, confuse and incapacitate the diaspora Ethiopians living around D.C., in the U.S and around the world. Their main mission entrusted to them by the terrorist TPLF is to play bad cap-good cap and confuse and disable the diaspora in order to break tha backbone of any viable opposition as soon as it appears on the horizon. Their main job for which Mirchawu (aka Amtatawu) and negussie get paid by the terrorist TPLF is to prevent any viable Ethiopian opposition (any viable threat to the terrorist TPLF) from gaining any strong foothold in the diaspora and divide and weaken their support or potential for support. The terrorist TPLF pays also for their air times. One pulls from the right and the other from the left with tha same goal of confusing the diaspora and destroying the opposition. Mirchawu plays good cap and negussie plays bad cap in their drama aimed to incapacitate the diaspora. They work together hands in gloves. They broadcast from the same station and share their air times without even any attempt to hide it. They also defend one another from any attack from the audience. By playing good cap especially Mirchawu tried to destroy Kinijit. HE also tried in futile to destroy the OLF, EPPF, AAPO, AFD, Ginbot 7 just to mention a few. The current mission from the terrorist TPLF on which Mirchawu is working hard is destroying MEDREK. The good thing is more and people are getting it. Ewunetu

How about UEDF ('Hibret') that was led by Merera Gudena and Beyene Petros and others like ONC and Oromo Federalist party. They have a strong cance of winning the election provided that the running ground is level. If democracy is about rule of majority UEDF should have ceazed the power long time ago since it has the massive support from Oromia and Southern nation nationalities.

Dear C'moi,

YOu might be a man and/or you might be a woman. I am not magician to contemplete that from my window far away.

Mr. Hailu Shawel's profile "IN THE NET" dates back only to 2008, which means that he is basically crippled, economically.

5000 USD will take him everywhere from google to my very small miserable website followed by Nazret.com.

If those stupids??Good??Fair??Moderatta?? we don't know but what them boys "Ra-ay"...Vision do some stuff for him, he can storm but not invade or infest the Ethiopian people, easy..easy...easy...

The sunday Radios might be pains in the ass to make him comment early and lose, otherwise the MEDREK stuff mongers fear and I do not think it works. The best poets of the country even at the times of sub-concious use it as KINET instead of Kihnet...Communist bullshit takes 100 years to be cleared out of sub-concious baby....

Mr. Hailu is good and I wish him 51%-49% because that is what Ethiopia needs, not a sweeping victory based on 35 years history of no government.

We were invisible Somalis' but the foundation got us survived without at least embarrassment and shame like animals living in the jungle without central core power. I mean the center was, you know just for the sake of Piracy against three thousand years of conseideals which is Ethiopian in every way, never plagiarized from the west, east or north. South was not in the map for some time, I mean Australia...
